Saat Phero Ki Hera Pherie (2018)
So and So
I only just watched this in 2022, and found the show so and so, there were some good comedic scenes, but a lot cringey episodes.
I honestly only started watching, and kept watching because of Amit Mistry (RIP) who I watched in other shows, and to me, his character Parimal along with Goldie and Vinati was probably the more better characters. Sadly imo, there were some episodes even Amit couldn't save (Which was usually when he wasn't in the spotlight anyways), some of his episodes I did enjoy a lot more.
Watching Amit from Bandish Bandits and Shor In the City allowed me to see him in a more lighter role that allowed him to act (There were times he may had overacted a little), so if you are a fan of him, yes the show is worth it. (If you aren't, then probably not, me personally if Amit had never been in this show, I would have turned it off by episode 5, most of the stars is really for the three characters I thought were funny,).
I will say, it does have some rather dumb episodes much as another review pointed out (Parimal being engaged before his current wife was dumb, and the episodes with Goldie and those two women felt very cheesy and dumb as well).
As for the other characters. Parimal's wife wasn't really anything to call home about, and the other couple were alright, they had their moments.
Maid aside, the show could have done without the other characters, which includes the daughter of the older couple.
I wouldn't expect anything deep, as someone who grew up in western culture and watched a lot of 90's comedy TV shows, this one reminds me of a cross between a few of those shows.
So if you got nothing much to do, and you like these actors, then watch it! If not, then it depends on your tastes.
Shor in the City (2010)
Fun and Good
Watching this film a decade after it's release, as I started to get into Indian films had been interesting. I had already become aware of the cast members such as Sendhil Ramamurthy, Sundeep Kishan, Amit Mistry (Bandish Bandits made me recongise him), and Radhika Apte (Sendhil in the west, is known for his role in Heroes, a few years prior to this), hearing Sendhil's very American accent was a ride, given in his other roles he always has an Indian accent.
And this has made me also really like both Nikhil, Amit Mistry (More then before), and Pitobash. I honestly think there was a missed opportunity to have a comedy movie with Tusshar, Nikhil, Amit, and Pitobash with their own movie (Which sadly will never happen, as Amit Mistry has passed on, too young. RIP). Although I admittedly preferred the latter three compared to Tusshar (No disrespect, he was good). There was something about the four that reminded me of some comedy movies in the west.
The comedy with some of the darker tones was well placed, it didn't just feel like randomness over the top gore, it really was interesting, and watching the characters interwine was fun (I only wish Amit and Radhika had a scene together), like I said I had watched these actors before, and seeing them all pile in the same movie was a fun trip. Seeing most of them collide and head to a similar goal was something I quite enjoy in movies.
Of course as every movie, there are some flaws and downsides, but I honestly think if you are a fan of any of the actors I mentioned, watch it. Girja and Zakkir were quite alright to watch as well.
Rewatching isn't bad either.
After the ten years, I wished Nikhil, Amit, Pitobash, Sundeep, and Radhika all had more centred movies as they each really showed their talents.
As a final note, I may be a little more kinder to this movie, as it did help me see Amit Mistry in a more serious and shadier role then his Bandish Bandit character. Rest in Peace sir, I only hope you are somewhere good.
Bandish Bandits (2020)
Nice
I watched this show slowly (Because I got distracted by other things), I found the first half slightly slower, but as it got to mid episodes, I was more interested in finding out what was going to happen, especially after it had more scenes for Radhe's parents and other uncle. The classical music was good (And when both his parents and Uncle were playing along with Radhe at the end, I thought that was beautiful).
It was interesting Radhe didn't end up with the girl (Tamanna).
I do give it 7 stars because there were some lull moments, and it could have been written better.
The final episode had me wondering what would happen in Season 2, I noticed there was something about S2 in production but said mid 2021, did it get cancelled due to covid or Amit Mistry's passing? (Devadan, the Uncle), I felt like if he hadn't passed, he would had a storyline in season 2 given his role in the last 4 episodes, made me actually want to know more about his character as well; the way he was to his nephew when Pandjit stopped talking him was sweet;but sadly that will not happen. If S2 does go ahead, I hope they do a tribute episode for him, and write in what happened to the Uncle.
I would think Radhe's parents would play a role as well as whether what happens with Tamanna after she goes to music school. And then there's Pandjit with his hearing loss. I do hope to see a second season. Pandjit's actor isn't getting any younger along with the rest.
Mimi (2021)
Great and Emotional!
I probably should have written this review when I watched it, but had been going through something.
That said, Mimi was an excellent movie that I wish more people saw globally, emotional, fanastic cast set up and story. It ended differently then I thought it would, and I am glad. The main actress Kriti acted these scenes out. Pankaj was an good casting choice as well, I loved how he wasn't the love interest but he was the understanding friend and became family, including his wife who eventually came to an understanding. All of the actors honestly deserve a good rating, I am not sure there was a bad one among them. I love the family aspect, that once everyone understood what happened, they all accepted their roles.
There was some humor, and some emotional scenes. The two white characters John and Summer were also good casting choices, usually when I see white characters in Indian movies, they don't really have much lines or if they do, it sounds dubbed and very hard to understand them. However the two actors who played them did it well, you like them first, then hate the characters but eventually happy with the way they realised their mistakes. I still laugh at Summer speaking in Hindi when the two main leads didn't think she could understand them, because you wouldn't normally expect a white person to learn Hindi enough to understand them.
I really thought they were going to tear the kid away and end up ruining it for Kriti's character, but at the end they came through and adopted another child. Sadly, it isn't unheard of western countries also wanting to leave their child due to a disability.
Definitely would watch again knowing what happens now, and I love the message at the end about adopting children. And again, I hope this becomes a global movie everyone enjoys, watch it with subtitles, because Pankaj, Kriti.and Sai in specific deserve to be seen.
Size Zero (2015)
Another great role from Anushka
First, I like to say I am a huge fan of Anushka Shetty since I have seen her in Baahubali/Bhaagamathie, and seeing her in a yet different and comedic role that is much lighter compared to the two mentioned was an interesting change. I have yet to seen a movie Anushka hasn't performed well in, even the movie Singam, which wasn't a good movie imo, Anushka still made that movie aleast a little bearable to watch.
Size Zero wasn't what I thought it would be, and I am glad for it. A fun comedy, while definitely has weak points I agree, it's hard to give it a lower rating due to Anushka's acting. Personally, I thought she was only chubby in this movie, so I am not sure why the characters thought she was obese, even her mother who wasn't exactly that slim herself. Perhaps it's just my own view of Anushka, the idea that no one would go out with that adorable face was a bit of a stretch.
The first half was cute, and her friendship with Jyothi was good. The last half could have been polished better, especially the romance part. Sadly I have forgotten the names of the two love interest to Anushka and the main guy, but I thought it was weird, given the girl was helping set up their new idea, I know this is typical in an Indian movie, but she wasn't truly that bad. The guy hadn't really done anything either (Although for me, it felt like he kinda just popped up midway). The main villain definitely could have been done better, him being done in by a random spy camera was a bit rushed imo.
Obivously not perfect, but I am looking forward to all of Anushka's films, as I do think she is a great actress with good acting range, I think the older she gets, the more fanastic she's going to be, and if Bollywood or any other Indian film industry don't hire her because of age, look or weight, then they are losing on a good actress. Personally, I also wish Anushka was globally known globally (As someone born in a western country, the name Anushka Shetty doesn't mean much sadly to people foreign to Indian films). I do hope one day she branches out to other films in the world, so more can see her acting.
One last note. In the last part of the movie when Sweety and friends were doing their sessions, did anyone else notice her Baahubali costair Tamaannah Bhatia in one of those videos? She's only in it for a total of split seconds due to the fast pacing of the scene, but she was on the screen advocating Sweety's campaign. She doesn't appear to be credited for this movie, so it made me wonder if it was actually her. I am 98% certain of it though. Not much to say, I just thought it was cool she had a cameo in Anushka's movie, in between Baahubali.
Definitely worth to watch, and an important message about weight.
Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans (2021)
Good Start. Bad Ending
I think Trollhunters the series was underrated and don't understand how it wasn't talked about that much.
The movie itself was good, I liked most of it, yes even the silly arcs like the male pregnancy, I think it should have been another series instead of movie, as it would have made more sense.
But, and this is why it's only 5 stars, I came here to see if anyone else thought the same, seems like everyone did. What was that ending? Tobias sarifice himself, but Jim goes back to the beginning? I do not understand? How does he hope to change the future? I thought when they were talking, it meant the beginning of the movie, or even trying to get something different. But the beginning? (Which why would he invite Strickler to dinner early, when he was the bad guy in the first season. He hasn't had his arc yet to develop.). Yeah it was sad they all died.
But the ending? That was a bad way to end an underrated series. We know you aren't just a kid's cartoon, you aren't afraid to tackle these subjects, and if you were so afraid of backlash over Tobias's death, it would have been so easy to just have some alien technology to save him. Like Pokemon's movie with Ash turning into stone, you could have invented some cry affect, better then this. And there's no proof Jim can even save it.
Just terrible way to end it, and there's no next series. We won't ever know if Jim will save them, or just got everyone killed because he went ahead and invited his at the time evil prinipcal to dinner.
Little Things (2016)
Not too bad
This show wasn't too bad for me. S1 was good, S2 wasn't bad. S3 it seemed to sort of die down, and having the girl always scolding the boy was a bit overdone, so many times she mentioned his name in a high pitched tone.
Overall, I would recommend watching it aleast one. It's got cute scenes, some nice moments. S3 was just my personal opinion, as it didn't have the same spark as S1.
Lust Stories (2018)
Not bad
This movie wasn't bad at all, I did enjoy parts of it. I thought the last story was kinda of dull, the first one was fine I enjoyed the characters. The story with the maid wasn't as exciting but I kind of got the message anyways.
The second story with Radhika Apte I found interesting, and this was the first movie I saw her in, I thought she was an awesome casting choice and made me seek out more of her movies, she definitely got those type of eyes that just wants you to keep watching.
Oh! Baby (2019)
Emotional and funny
Oh Baby has it all, emotional scenes, good songs, and funny scenes. The title itself doesn't make it seem like it will be that great, but it honestly was. Samantha was the best casting choice, the way she was when she woke up was just so adorable, I could definitely see an old woman becoming a much younger self would be that excited she could do everything again. The songs she sung were beautiful, especially the Alone one, her voice was perfect for it and brought me to tears with the emotional parts.
It is a shame this movie isn't well known out to all of the world, because it deserves to be, especially the song mentioned above. Yes it is definitely goofy, but that's what a comedy is. This movie made me fall in love with Samantha, all the other casting was good as well. For a hilarious movie, I also wasn't expecting to be hit in the heart, the last scenes were good but also sad. I could definitely believe her son when he was upset about her giving up her youth again.
Everyone should watch this aleast once.
Thaanaa Serndha Koottam (2018)
Fun movie
I enjoyed this movie, was the first Suriya movie I watched and thought he was pretty good, of course I watched this movie originally because of Ramya Krishnan.
It does have a nice little message, and it is fun to watch, which Ramya and Suriya were a big deal for the reason why. Seeing Ramya as Sivagami in Bahubali as the first movie, it was fun watching her turn into a sweet motherly type, she has huge acting range that is a shame she isn't globally known, almost a crime. Ramya's own range could be seen in this movie, due to her first scene she looked deadly as a cobra, then switched to a nervous mother type. Watch it aleast once.
Bãhubali: The Beginning (2015)
Epic
This was the first Indian movie I watched from beginning to end, including the Conclusion, I am half Indian whom mostly saw Indian movies whenever my father or his siblings watched it. (I am half Indian/Australian), Bahubali was the first for me.
It was an epic movie that I think should have gained global recongition in the western culture of movies, I have always tried to get others to watch it too. There were a few corny moments but it wasn't as bad. Ramya Krishnan and Anushka Shetty caught my attention the most, until this movie, I don't think I had seen an badass woman like them (The ones I saw partly of were all old movies). Prabhas was just as fanastic, I love the way his character had a boyish charm and curiosity in what he did.
Tamaanaah Bhatia was also fanastic, and Rana was good, I honestly don't have much to complain about, as Bhatia's character was a strong female lead much like Ramya/Anushka.
I still listen to the songs on Youtube, especially Hamsa Naava as it is a good song.
Singam 3 (2017)
Okay but not the best
This movie was okay, not the worst but definitely not the best, I mostly watched this because of Suriya and Anushka Shetty, without them I wouldn't have given it a shot, was disappointed that Anushka wasn't in it as much as I thought she would. But even with that, Suriya/Anushka makes it bearable enough to watch.
Definitely over the top type of movie, it was interesting to see Sydney as one place in the movie, as an Indian-Australian myself.
The Wilds (2020)
Good but not the best
I disagree with the people saying this is a terrible show, it really isn't as bad as you think it is, but everyone has different thoughts.
First episode is kinda slow, I will give you that, and there was far too much talking from the "interviewing" but it seremed to let that go by episode 4.
I think 7 out of 10 is perfect for it, good enough to watch, but can definitely be better. I found aleast three of the girls annoying (Leah being the top one, I liked her dialogue in her first scene because she does have a point, we put too much hardship and pressure on teenagers, then wonder how they end screwed up.). Surprising, the Christian girl Shelby, was not the annoying one, Fatin had some annoying parts but was still a better character then Leah.
Rachel, Leah, and Toni I think might have been the three that could have been turned down a little, I get they are sixteen, but they went a bit over the top.
The way they went about trying to get off the island was weird. Martha's attempt to save a goat was pure selfishness I must confess, 8 girls dying of starvation, she had no problem eating the seafood, but she wants to let them die here, I get she did kill the goat in the end, but it shouldn't have even been a question, and you know this is the person that would have let a starving lion eat a goat, but not starving humans on an island.
The main bad person here is the woman, I hope the whole point behind her is that someone will point out what a hypocrite she is, going on about how bad the patriarch is, about making women leaders and better people...
Yet she screwed over 8 teenage girls whom have no idea what actually happening, manipulating the parents in thinking they were on a happy retreat. There better not be some redemption arc or "Bigger boss is male" in S2 or this won't deserve 7 out of 10. There's no excuse for her or her lackeys to be causing this type of pain. And it seems a death has occured on her watch (Although not mentioned, Martha is not there in the present time, suggesting she is killed off).
It's obivous what S2 will be since it's kinda revealed in the end, so her husband is probably working that angle (She's a mother, so likely she's a wife and they both into sick twisted games).
I will still be watching, just hope it ends with the organisation all getting karma, and not some silly thing that leads the woman to redemption. You can't possible think you are a good person by doing all that.
Dead to Me (2019)
Good actors, but story fails a little
I just binged this show, and I have several thoughts. Spoilers for S1 and S2 endings.
I think overall, it's not a bad series, the actors did well in their roles, especially Christina Applegate. I honestly did like Jen, yeah she was aggressive but she was greiving as well. (I also thought the way she treated Ted's mother was bull, she called her an attention seeker for breaking down at her son's funeral? The hate on her made no sense.)
However I agree with Detective Perez in the end about Judy. What. The. Hell. First of all, she ran over a man; doesn't matter if the man cheated on his wife. Judy's husband would have been charged with accessory to the crime, Not only does she stalk the woman at a support group, she moves in and acts all nice to them, until she finally confesses.
Jen is of course very angered, which leads to her discovering Steve was also in the car, resulting in her murdering him. Somehow Judy comes out of in S2 clean. Jen forgives her? And during the whole second season, Judy is literally portrayed as the victim, to a point they contiuned to blame Steve for it. Jen is also blamed at the end for lying about Steve attacking.. DESPITE Judy is the reason for all this. And even at the end, the cop Perez lets them get away with it. The actress whom played Judy was awesome, but the character herself is the worst unlikeable character on the show.
The end part of S2 also, so Ben the twin of Steve is DUI and hits Jen's car? So I guess S3 is just going to be more about him being a bad person. (Despite the man just pretty much found out his brother was dead for real and his remains were found) I am torn, because Judy's actions and able to get away with things makes this show more annoying to watch, it isn't like Dexter or You where the MC struggle with their psychopathic tendacies. This is straight up Judy not caring she did anything wrong. (Pointing out when Jen saw Steve's mother, she had a breakdown. When Judy saw Ted's mother, she helped mocked the greiving woman).
Should you watch it? Yes. Because the acting styles of Jen, Judy, Perez, Nick, Ben, and others were well done. Just keep in mind, if you are expecting justice to come to Judy, it may never come to it.
