El orfanato (2007)
The Orphange is seriously overrated
First of all, I love foreign movies and do not have a problem with following subtitles, I can focus on both the subs and what is happening on screen at the same time, secondly, I love Italian horror movies, Suspiria is in my top five horror movies list, thirdly I do not have a problem with horror movies that have no gore, some of my favourite gore-less horror movies are The Innocents, The Haunting, The Changeling etc etc. Now to The Orphanage, I feel that the rave reviews on this one are due to the film having something to do with the director of Pan's Labyrinth (another seriously overrated movie which looks clever on the surface but when you delve deeper is less than cerebral) I have news for those reviewers, Del Toro did not direct this, he merely gave his name to it so the film would garner more attention. Now to the performances and the plot of the movie itself, the main actress is really irritating as the mother of the missing child, she just comes across as a hysterical neurotic. The son is one dimensional and the fact that he is HIV positive seems to be an effort by the scriptwriters to lend the film a contemporary sympathetic edge, it does not work with me. Why did he have to have Aids? Why not Cancer? I will leave that up to you to decide. Now people are saying this movie is scary, if you find watching Bugs Bunny cartoons scary then yes this movie will be scary to you. The whole film is a mishmash of generic "scary" music playing in the background, shots of dark murky corners and damp basements, the hysterical mother walking around with a melancholic expression, echoes of children's voices, dark figures of children flitting past the camera lens and thats it, yes, that's all folks. Zero character development and as for the ending, the word is pathetic, it turns out the son has been alive all this time, after days and days of his mother's searching, what has he been doing? it seems he has been hanging around in a dark dungeon all this time without making any attempt to get out of there and contact his mother, how has he been feeding himself? To top it off, it turns out that the ghosts were friendly after all and happen to be the childhood friends of the son's mother, as they crowd round the tearful mother and her son at the end manipulative "emotional" music plays in a pathetic attempt to get to the the heart strings of the probably gullible audience.
These days if I look at a review on IMDb of a newly released film and it has any more than 6 stars I usually know it will turn out to be a 1 star film in reality.
The Devil's Rain (1975)
The Devil's Rain will fall on all those that dismiss this little gem
I remember this one from my childhood and it definitely deserves a much higher rating which is why I have given it 10 stars, I would normally give it about 6. It is cheesy and fun and is not meant to be taken seriously, its atmospheric and delightfully quirky and you can't go wrong with the hamming it up of Borgnine and Shatner. Really this one is underrated and deserves more than the 3 star treatment on IMDb, this is a movie that works on its own terms despite not having much of a plot or script.
When you look at the state of horror movies today this one from the 70s feels like a masterpiece, its not frightening but unless you are ten years old what horror movie is? I urge you to give this one a try and judge it by its own context
I Am Legend (2007)
Over-hyped and inexplicably overpraised
I am thoroughly shocked by the sheer amount of positive reviews of this woefully inept film here on the IMDb board, I had the misfortune to sit through this last night and after reading the positive reviews here I thought that I was watching a totally different film. The special effects were terrible and in 6 months time this film will look dated, the whole film was souless, not to mention clichéd, the characterisation was too generic and I can only believe the reason this film got great reviews here on IMDb was because the majority of reviewers were Will Smith fans that would have praised any film in which he starred. The Omega Man while being far from perfect is an easily superior effort and The Last Man on Earth beats it too, 2 classic films in their own right. This latest adaption of the Matheson novel is sadly lacking in all depts, it stinks of Hollywood cliché, no wonder Hollywood is churning out so much crap when this kind of movie gets treated like a masterpiece, long live The Omega Man and The last man on Earth This is an awful awful awful awful film, anyone with half a brain should avoid this like the plague
The fact that the majority of reviews of this film are positive could very possibly be down to Hollywood moles bombarding IMDb with fake reviews in order to attract the gullible
Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)
A question
I recently bought this movie on DVD thinking it to be another film, Nevertheless I was very impressed by it and the performances were excellent not just by the leads but by the lesser members of the cast, it is harrowing and any teenager who is thinking of dabbling in drugs should be shown this movie. Anyway can anyone tell me the title of the film I am looking for? It is either German or French or French Canadian and is about 2 disillusioned young girls who run away from home and live down and out in the city (could be Berlin or Montreal) it ends with them getting on a subway and committing suicide with a bottle of vodka and a bottle of pink medicinal fluid can anyone please tell me the title?
