I Care a Lot (2020)
Who greenlit this?
Honestly, what screenwriter wrote this thing and who approved it? How could such a glorious miscalculation of a story ever be put to film?
The film's leads, the two women running the scam, are vile, disgusting, detestable characters. They have absolutely no redeeming qualities. They are not cool, they are not "misunderstood", they are not a parody of anything. They are as likeable as your average international pedophile human trafficker, or con-artist scamming cancer patients out of their money promising fake cures. I found myself hating them more than any other film character in recent memory. I actively rooted for their antagonsit (Peter Dinklage) and actively wanted them to die suffering.
But the film is centered around them, as if it considers them to be sympathetic or charismatic. I found that so jarring.
To be fair, acting, especially by Rosamund Pike is superb, and the cinematography is good too. But the story is horrible. Honestly, who thought people would identify with these characters?
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
Almost perfect
A modern, understated, clever, surreal, and weirdly heartwarming story about two teenagers who think they are missfits, but turn out to be genuine people. A wonderful subversion of the romantic comedy "crazy fun adventure" trope. Absolutely great soundtrack. Not for everyone though, definitely more of an artistic series, like a dark version of Wes Anderson.
Operation Finale (2018)
Garbage
For real though, who had the idea to shoot the first act like a comedy? With silly soundtrack, quipy comebacks and comedic editing? For such a serious movie? And then, why would this movie choose to portray Adolf Eichmann as literally the most likeable and relatable character in the film? And not in a clever, "we could all be monsters" way, but just because all other characters are stupid and/or incompetent. If you know nothing about history, this Eichmann guy in the movie looks like fun! Apart from a very small scene, that is. Don't watch this movie, really, its portrayal of the Mossad as incompetent buffoons and Eichmann as relatable and gentlemanly is almost offensive.
Us (2019)
Horrible misuse of a clever concept
This movie has an original concept, that could have been handled much much better. The main plot devolves into a generic horror film the genre of which I will not mention to keep this spoiler-free. It is a huge waste of potential. Don't waste your time.
Legado en los huesos (2019)
Thanks, I hate it
DISCLAIMER: This is the first movie of the trilogy I saw, so I cannot say whether not having seen the first one played any role in my experience with this one.
Now, to the business at hand: this movie is a perfect example of what detective thrillers-mysteries are not supposed to be. This movie introduces an avalanche of plot points every minute, which unavoidably leads to an overabundance of unresolved plotlines, what a more malicious critic would call "plotholes", or even "contradictions". This movie has just so much stuff in it, yet it leaves the most interesting aspects of the plot with absolutely not sufficient development. Basically all the characters' motivations are unclear. I will not get into the nitty-gritty because I want to keep this review spoiler free.
The simplest crime stories, with a tightly-knit plot, tend to be best. This movie bit off way more than it could chew and it shows.
VERDICT: Absolutely don't pay to watch it, and even if you can access it for free, I would suggest giving it a pass. Even with full, unwavering attention to the movie very many things make no sense, let alone if you just plan to watch it casually.
I suppose acting and cinematography are fine. It's the story that is lacking, and in a crime mystery, it's the story that matters
