Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Enjoyable but not perfect.
One of the most popular, most hyped, and biggest franchises of all time finally comes to end. The movie was very enjoyable and entertaining, especially for Marvel fans. The movie will make you cheer, laugh, and cry. Seeing all these beloved characters on screen for possibly the last time really does something. Endgame serves as a good conclusion to a well-known franchise. But how does it stand as a film?
The plot was pretty standard, the heroes use time travel to collect all the infinity stones to resurrect everyone who died. They do so, but past Thanos finds out and attacks the present-day Marvel HQ building in an attempt to get the stones. The heroes fight his army to defend the stones and end up winning. The use of time travel leads to some complications and plotholes that force you to suspend disbelief a bit too much.
The first act was supposed to be sad because of all the losses we were met with after Infinity War. The color palette is dark and everyone is brooding. But, its an MCU movie so there has to be unnecessary quips that completely ruin the dreadful tone that was previously established. Instead of a persisting feeling of melancholy and grief, the first act feels empty and boring. The first act of Endgame is a prime example of how not to use comedy.
The second act was basically intertextuality mixed with some light fan service, a few unwanted jokes, and some truly emotional, character-driven moments. There was an initial feeling of tension because these guys only had one shot. They end up screwing the whole thing up, and someone gets the brilliant idea to go back in time and get more Pym particles. But, that ends up completely ruining the high stakes and tension. But, it does give us one of the best scenes in the movie, which is when Tony meets his dad. That scene gave us a great understanding of Tony's relationship with his father. The moment was personal, character-driven, and touching. everything was pretty standard.
The third act was a tribute to the entire MCU. It had a bunch of references and heavy fan service. If you are an MCU fan you will cheer during the final battle. Cap picking up Thor's hammer and Tony sacrificing himself were both important moments in their character arcs. If you aren't that big of a fan, you probably won't care about the final battle, because there is 0 tension or high stakes. Fan service isn't a bad thing, but you have to build tension and fear if you want a good climax. Throwing around references may feel amazing during the first viewing, but you will soon see that there are barely any stakes and it will take a lot out of the movie.
The movie did justice to Cap and Tony, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better ending to their character arcs. But, it wasted Thor and Hulk and used them for nothing but quips. I honestly didn't care about the other characters all that much. This is one of those extremely entertaining, "don't think about it too much" movies. There a few plotholes and the ending kinda drags, but it certainly is enjoyable. I'm not a Marvel fan, but I will admit this movie is pretty good. There are better MCU movies and far better comic-book movies. Not as good as Infinity War, but still entertaining.
