Painkiller (2023)
Important story, but the series fell short
First, I just want to say this is a fascinating, upsetting and incredibly important story and this series is bringing awareness to a massive issue in America and some of the immortalities surrounding big pharma.
Overall, I enjoyed this series, it wasn't too long and the acting from Uzo Aduba was excellent with the script she was dealt.
Unfortunately, it just misses the mark. Some parts of the script were over dramatised and the conversations unrealistic; the 'Madame' did not belong in this series the way she was presented, I see what they were trying to do but it was off putting.
Some of the editing seemed amateur and it was uncomfortable to watch, but not in the way they intended.
For such a big story, I think they could have done a lot better.
The Stranger (2020)
Entertaining but slightly too complex
I really enjoyed this series; the acting was good and the storyline was gripping I ended up binging the whole thing.
It was an intense drama, some parts scary and some quite sad. I found Siobhan Finners performance brilliant and could watch her on screen all day.
The reason I only give it a 7 is because I feel as though the writer had so many ideas for a tv show and wanted to cram them all into one series. Some of the storylines felt a little unnecessary and overly complex where I lost concentration after a little while.
I also think some of the morals were slightly mixed and some characters I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like them or not.
Overall would recommend it though just a shame it wasn't a few episodes shorter.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)
Overly complicated
Really enjoyed the first Knives Out but this one was overly complicated from the start. It was too focused on comments about recent events and was far too long to be able to follow.
Daniel Craig was brilliant and some funny moments with great actors, each individually well acted and quite entertaining.
Just a shame as it was too complex and overall disappointing when it had some good potential, even from the start I couldn't get into it.
Felt like if a bit more time and effort had been put into it and it had been cut by about an hour it would have been entertaining but was really disappointing unfortunately.
Criminal: UK (2019)
Excellent series ruined by episode 'Alex'
Great concept for a series especially the episode with David Tennant, really captivating and entertaining.
The episode 'Alex' ruined it for me. They had an opportunity to use their platform to show all the issues with rape cases and difficulties convicting rapists. I had a feeling throughout they were going to say it was a false allegation and I was really hoping they wouldn't take that route with so many other issues that could have been highlighted. The minuscule proportion of cases that are the result of false allegations are given so much attention in the media it makes it even more difficult to convict someone when an actual rape happens.
I just think this was a massively missed opportunity and left a sour taste in my mouth. I won't be watching any more after that which is a shame as it is such a well put together programme with great acting.
