Ercole al centro della Terra (1961)
Very disappointing
I really do not understand why so many people talk about this movie as a masterpiece, or at least the best in it's genre.
It is absolutely NOT the best, there are at least two other movies much better than this one: Hercules conquers Atlantis (AKA Hercules and the captive women) and Hercules against the moon men. And maybe others too, it's not that I've seen every single movie in this genre so...
This movie is not terrible, it is two hours long and when I finished it I felt like less than an hour passed so there must be something that it does right, but for sure it is nothing special either. The plot is often dumb and silly and very poorly presented and explained, even if it's quite simple so overall it's easy to understand it anyway. The movie is not as atmospheric as many people say, sometimes it feels like a dream but for the wrong reasons: it does not make much sense just like an average dream wouldn't. The only thing that I really like about this movie is the protagonist, Reg Park is just perfect as Hercules, his look and his attitude push all the right buttons for this role: he looks extremely strong, confident, nice, kind, and down to earth kind of guy, everything I would expect from a protagonist of this type, as a character Reg Park's Hercules is a masterpiece, the way he perfectly represent anything I would expect from Hercules, but besides the fact that for sure it is not a terrible movie and for sure there are much worse ways to waste two hours of your life this is the only very positive thing I can think of about this movie. It lacks creativity, imagination, it is not particularly entertaining (not as much as I expected anyway), it is not as aesthetically pleasing or atmospheric as many people say, it is just nothing special. I do not recommend to watch it but I also do not recommend to avoid it, it's just a big "meh". If you want to watch it just keep your expectations low. You can enjoy Reg Park's Hercules in Hercules conquers Atlantis too, which is a much better movie (probably THAT one IS the best in its genre, if you ask me), much more interesting, entertaining and also more atmospheric too, so there is really no reason to watch Hercules in the haunted world in my opinion. It is not terribly bad, but for sure not good enough either, I really cannot understand why most people who talk about it have such a high opinion on this movie. Watch it if you want, just make sure to watch Hercules conquers Atlantis too, believe me that one is much more worth insvesting time on.
JoJo no Kimyô na Bôken (2012)
Fantastic masterpiece, but I suggest you to skip part 5
It is really difficult to write only one review about JoJo, because it is a show that keeps evolving with every new part, everytime it becomes bigger, more complex, it adds more features, and so many things changes.
But for the most part at the same time it is very coherent, and this makes it even more interesting.
Part 4, Diamond is unbreakable, is probably the best one, part 3 is the most iconic, but I really love all the first four parts, and part 6 will be as good as them too (I've read the original manga and I loved part 6 as well).
Part 5 (Golden Wind) instead is just bad. It is not even really JoJo, all of a sudden it begins to focus to things that have nothing to do with the lore of the series, with the main characters, that I could not care less about and, even worse, that makes absolutely no sense at all.
In every other part of JoJo the main characters have a very strong motivation to fight, they usually have to save themselves from a menacing enemy who is threatening them. But in part 5 there is no motivation at all for the main plot.
The events that make the main characters start their adventure make no sense at all. One of the main characters is presented as a perverted, sadistic and ruthless assassin except after 20 minutes he decidses to team up with the teenager that he was sent ti kill because drugs are bad and kids need someone to protect them against drugs and evil gangsters. And good hearted, heroic gangsters is the most logical way to solve this problem, right (??????)
Everything about part 5 is terribly stupid.
The only good thing is that you can just skip it because it is basically a spin off filler. There is nothing in part 5 of what makes JoJo such a great masterpiece and the story is completely unrelated to the other parts
I expect part 6, Stone Ocean, to be very good because the manga was very good and this show has always been very faithful to the manga. I'm particularly excited to see it because it will be the definitive ending of the original story. And for many newcomers, for many people who don't already know what it will be like, will be quite difficult to accept it probably, because it is very unexpected, and very weird. It took me a while to truly appreciate it and understand its beauty, but for those who are willing to challenge their perspective and their expectations it will be an absolutely exciting ending, absolutely mind blowing. And very satisfying too. In a very weird way.
I love JoJo so much. It is so exciting and engaging. Golden Wind would not deserve even a one star rating, it is terrible, but it is just not JoJo if you ask me.
Just skip it and enjoy everything else this show has to offer, because it is a fantastic masterpiece.
Lost in Space (1998)
Great concept but too many mistakes
This movie could have been such a good "popcorn mindless fun" kind of flick, but unfortunately they made too many mistakes for it to be really enjoyable.
The story overall is perfect for a movie like this, a few details in the premise are not very convincing but they are just details and it would be rather easy to forget about them if this was the only problem.
Unfortunately this movie is full of problems.
The most noticeable one is Matt Le Blanc. He just cannot be convincing and believable enough in a role like that. He might be good in comedies and that's fine, just don't try to put him in an adventure movie like this one.
Another big problem is the annoying little girl. I know that probably making her annoying and irritating was intentional, but why? The only purpose of that character is to make the movie less enjoyable and more irritating when she is on screen.
Other actors are perfectly fine, William Hurt is fantastic and every scene built around him is very enjoyable, but those two mentioned above really ruin the mood of the movie.
The special effects are another big problem. It is not just that they are bad, I usually don't even complain about special effects, but in this case they are not just bad, in many cases they feel completely out of place just like Matt LeBlanc does.
There are so many immersion breaking things in this movie and obviously it cannot do what it is supposed to do because of that (escapism).
It is such a shame because, a few minor details aside, the story is very good, the ending is miraculously good (an ending like this would have been awful in every other movie, but in this one it works wonderfully because it makes sense in a movie that is supposed to feel like a pilot episodde rather than a common movie), and as I said William Hurt is great too, and I just like the concept of this movie really a lot, but as I said there are too many things that just feel wrong and out of place in it.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
This movie is a joke, but at least it ius fun to laugh at it
First of all keep in mind that this movie is just style over substance. You will find a huge amount of style in it, although you might end up so bored that you might not be able to appreciate it.
There is very little substance, and the movie doesn't even do anything to let you recognize that little substance easily.
First of all you need to know that this movie is based on a book, but it does not tell almost anything about the story of that book. This movie just want to show you a few small parts of it, parts that are related to an event that is explained in the book but not in the movie.
The "perfect" artifcial intelligence goes mad and tries to kill the scientists it is supposed to work with and in its very lenghty runtime this movie never even try to explain you why.
Since this is basically the only plot that this movie has and there is a very specific reason why this happens this is a really controversial and weird choice in my opinion.
But honestly my problem with this movie is just how useless, pathetic and uninteresting it is.
I have seen it once and I thought "WTF is this thing???", but at least I was amused by its weirdness, and I watched it another time, and the second time I felt like I got what it was all about.
You can split this movie in two half. In the first half a computer becomes dangerous so a man destroy it to save himself. Nothing weird happens.
In the second half of the movie a man obviously dies (he gets strayed in outer space) and since that happens you start to see every kind of weird and otherworldly kind of stuff you can imagine. The movie becomes very abstract, very "hallucinated" and crazy. So the message is clear in my opinion: computers don't have a soul and just gets broken, humans have a soul and when they die there is an afterlife for them. Ok, I don't think that I needed to waste two hours of my life to know that the authors of this movies felt that things work that way, but at least it is fun to laugh at it.
It is particularly interesting and entertaining to show this movie to people who have never seen it. It is truly a remarkable experience. It is slow, it is boring, itis pretentious, but after all you can find ways to have fun watching it. Lol. I don't think that it is a satisfying movie, not at all, but if you really want to try it I'm sure it can be interesting. In the worst case you will just end up feeling so unbearably bored that you will have to just stop it. Everything considered I wuold say that this movie is so bad that it MIGHT be good, at least if you are in the mood.
In the Mouth of Madness (1994)
If you like Lovecraft, Hirohiko Araki or just fantasy in general you will love this
I'm not a big fan of horror genre. I actually tend to avoid it because I am easily scared, and I don't like being scared, but I love Lovecraft because for me his stories and his imagination are very evocative and intriguing and very fascinating too, and I also love Araki's work because I just love the bizarre, and this movie is 100% Lovecraft except Lovecraft has never been that bizarre, completely messed up, absurd and plain crazy. This movie is 200% madness, at firts it seems normal and maybe a bit boring too (it is on purpose, of course) but things escalate really quickly and this movie becomes the funniest and wildest rollercoaster ride in the territory of fantasy and darkness.
I think that this movie is not too scary, but maybe it is just because I really hate reality, and reality is the real "victim" in this movie.
Watching the movie it is clear that the main chasracter will never be in real danger... well, at least his body is not. It is the whole world around him that gets completely twisted, destroyed and blown up during the entire movie until in the end he don't even know "what" he or any other human being in the "real" world is, and for me this feels more intriguing and entertaining than scary.
In my opinion the gore is rather tame too, I usually cannot stand gore and violence but there is not so much that makes the movie too hard to watch in my opinion.
Some scenes are actually creepy, some of them became even creepier after I watched the movie several times, but overall in my opinion this movie is just very enjoyable, and every scene that was creepy also somehow felt cool at the same time, so cool that it ends up being really enjoyable.
I know that many horror fans like this movie too, but I write this review for people like me who are not into horror that much but love fantasy, love weird stuff, and don't like reality that much, I suggest you to give this movie a try because in my opinion you could really love it. If you are not sure maybe try to read a few stories by Lovecraft first: if you feel comfortable reading them then definitely watch this because I think that you will love it.
La casa stregata (1982)
Very fun and charming
This movie is very fun, Pozzetto is very entertaining and the setting is charming and fascinating too. The story is simple and interesting, sometimes the characters act in a weird way just because the script needs to create comedic and hilarious situations, it is not always believable and not everything always makes sense, but it is fun and entertaining enough that you will want to ignore this fact and enjoy the movie anyway - at least I do everytime I watch it. The story at its core is simple and makes sense anyway. It is my favourite italian movie it is probably not a masterpiece but it is the one I enjoy the most. The ovie is fun and you usually don't see such a beautiful and fascinating setting in comedies, but in horror movies instead. A fun comedy with such a gorgeous setyting is a very interesting mix in my opinion and it makes this movie particularly satisfying and enjoyable.
Kristen (2015)
This is not even meant as entertainment
This movie is not mneant to be a product for entertainment. It is just a very long advertisement for religion. It is just propaganda, shallow, blatant and pathetic. So blatant that it is only hilarious to make fun of it... if only such a product was not outrageous as well.
It is not even too scary, obviously, being just propaganda they probably wanted this movie to be accessible for younger viewers too. I tend to avoid horror movies because I don't like being scared and this one was rather light even for my standards. I would say that it would be depressing more than anything else if it could be taken seriously, but you just can't take seriously something that was so obviously meant to be just brainwash and pathetic propaganda like this movie is. Avoid it, it is only brainwash garbage and it is so blatant that it ends up being laughable.
