Mein Bruder heisst Robert und ist ein Idiot (2018)
Pretentious - The Movie (spoilers: but nothing specific/only broad description)
Beginning: two siblings in their late teens are learning for a philosophy exam. It is strongly hinted at that they have feelings for each other but don't know what they should do or feel about that.
Even though it's a film the relationship between them is (for the most part) believeable and you really think that they are siblings.
The pseudo intellectual/philosophical rambling of the brother about time, being and consciousness make (mostly) no sense.
Middle: the actions of the siblings become more and more erratic without any indication to why. The brothers ramblings make less sense by the minute.
End: the actions become nonsensical and downright illegal. Some examples: rape (both m to f and vice versa), capturing a human/hoding him hostage, torture and murder.
All without motive or reason.
Brother rambles on.
TLDR: pseudo intellectual film that tries to distract the viewer from the lack of story/good characters with shock value and incomprehensible, philosophical babbling.
Sum1 (2017)
B Action Movie with a good end (if you're a cynic)
For a plot summary please look at the start of the page.
Film feel: The exposition and and main part of the movie is eerily similar to the likes of Moon and Oblivion. But in contrast, this film drags on much more because there is no funny dialog or a subplot. The dominant grey-blue colour palette doesn't help either. The film wants to showcase the monotonous and boring routine of the main character but takes it too far and bores the viewer.
The film tries to have a twist ending but is to simple to really pull it off. The story is so bland that one can count the possible endings on two fingers.
If you're a cynic (like me) then you will like the ending. More would be spoiler.
Exposition: 1/10 (if you have seen Oblivion and/or Moon you can skip it) Main Part: 1/10 (too bland and simple) Ending: 6/10 (good ending for cynics; I couldn't stop grinning)
TLDR: if this was a 20 min short film it might have been good. Like this it drags on for 90% of the run time.
What Happened to Monday (2017)
interesting concept badly executed
pro:
-interesting concept
-some nice-ish twists and turns
con:
-obvious plot armour
example:
-the sibling can take extreme punishment and are fine while trained soldiers "luckily" trip and break their necks
-all bad guys can't hit anything (they are all trained soldiers!) while the good guy is basically John Wick
Normally I wouldn't complain about something like that but here it was extreme and took me out of the experience.
04/10 = bad genre film = wouldn't recommend
Mother! (2017)
Meh - obvious metaphorical film with great actors
Since it's Darren Aronofsky you know that the whole film will be a metaphor. The sooner you get the theme of the film, the sooner you know exactly what will roughly happen (storywise).
I found the analogies and metaphors to be rather on the nose and so I knew what the film was about/how it was gonna end after 1/4 of the movie. At this point the only thing that was new were the visuals. For some that might be enough. I found it to be rather lackluster. Sure, great performances from the leads and good visuals but without a compelling/surprising story it's not enough for me.
