FDR: Nothing to Fear (2023)
Very good but bogged down by too many commercials
This documentary on Franklin Delano Roosevelt covers all the bases up to the first 100 days of his presidency. It starts with his marriage to Eleanor and his slow, but steady rise from state councilman to assistant secretary of the navy, to governor, and then finally to the presidency. The acting is fine and the mixture of real videos with the docudrama videos add to the realism. A huge detraction is the overwhelming number of commercials that take place during the two hour time span. Often times only five minutes or so of the video takes place before the next round of 4 to 5 minutes of commercials. This was really offputting.
UFOs Invade Hollywood (2021)
Good introduction to 1950s UFO flicks
Using a short introduction of each film, and then the trailer, this documentary presents a concise and interesting look in chronological order of a number of the UFO movies that inundated our culture during the 1950s. There is a short backdrop of each movie and its cast, including what each movie cost and what it made in ticket sales. Moviegoers who want to get a good overview of the cheesy, yet sincere UFO movies of this decade should give this documentary a look.
Included in the documentary are trailers from: The Thing, Earth vs the Flying Saucers, The Man From Planet X, It Conquered the World, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, plus many more.
Cinematic Titanic: The Alien Factor (2010)
Making a bad movie funny...
The quintet from Cinematic Titanic do a terrific job making this turkey of a film watchable. This live version has a number of laugh out loud riffs. Joel and Mary Ann are good, but Frank, Trace, and J. Elvis steal the show and have the best lines.
The movie is another one of those amateurish efforts that has the look of being created by someone with a video camera who decided to make a movie on a drunken weekend. It also appears as if the director got some of the folks in his home town to agree to star in this snoozer. (or maybe they lost a bet) There's plenty of lame dialogue, poor sound quality, wooden acting, terrible special effects, bad lighting, and endless walking through the woods - but I loved every minute because of the Cinematic Titanic gang.
Manos Returns (2018)
Painfully bad
The original Manos is widely considered as one of the worst movies of all time. Its famous only because of the creative minds at Mystery Science Theater 3000. But not even those comedic geniuses could make this turkey watchable.
The acting, if one could call at that, it's so amateurish that it's beyond cringe worthy. The three original members of the original Manos who are also in this sequel should be given medals for having to go go through something like this twice.
I actually felt sorry for those people that had to work in this thing, but not as sorry as I was for myself because I wasted over an hour of my life watching this dreck. Don't bother.
Cheap Thrills - Those Drive-in Horror Flicks (2022)
Plenty of scenes/but no structure
This "documentary" of old 50s and 60s sci-fi and horror movies is really not as unwatchable as some of the earlier reviewers have stated. It contains scenes from between 40 and 50 different movies lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to well over a minute. This movie is worth watching, if, for no other reason, then to marvel at the cheesy special effects, poor make up of these monsters and any of other things found in the films.
There's bad lighting, fuzzy, film, quality, and dubious dialogue all the way around. But, if nothing else, there are plenty of scenes to view. Each clip is labels the movie from which it is shown , but that's all. There are no voice overs, no explanations of any type, or any kind of organization to this film whatsoever.
If you like a lot of screaming, thrashing around and ridiculous monsters which make you laugh, then I think you'll enjoy watching this short film.
