Calibre (2018)
Crime and punishment in the Scottish highlands
A dark thriller that explores what happens to a perfectly nice guy when things go completely FUBAR during a hunting trip with your best friend who has a more ambiguous moral compass.
A well-paced film with an increasing sense of tension and Dostoyevskian paranoia, stellar acting by the two leads and supporting cast, and beautiful shots of the Scottish Highlands.
***SPOILER***
My only beef is that the whole film rests on one illogical plot point....
If you're a well-know local and it's the final week of hunting season (as the film keeps reminding the viewer), why in god's name are you out camping with your kid in the woods?
The 50 Best Horror Movies You've Never Seen (2014)
Great lineup even though you may not agree with all choices.
I was shocked, SHOCKED, that Peter Jackson's Dead Alive aka Braindead was not included here (he also did Heavenly Creatures). This brilliant gem is much less known than Repulsion, Audition or Let the Right One In.
An early Del Toro like Chronos might have been nice too. What about the brilliant Ghost Watch, or Angst, or The Other? I guess I could go on. The choices were also overwhelmingly 'white' and North American, but there were a few that I had not heard of that I definitely want to check out.
