The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling (2018)
Apatow's Masterpiece
Apatow does a great job of combining comedy and poignancy in capturing the essence of this incredibly brilliant, funny man. It becomes clear through the course of the documentary, that the impact of the loss of his brother haunted him throughout his life. While taking his comedy around his mother lightly over the years, it is in this documentary that we see the profound pain in their relationship. She apparently poured all of her energy into Gary in an unhealthy way to divert the pain felt in her loss. This is a must watch film for anyone who is a student of life and wants to get over idealizing that anyone else has it better than they do.
Home Work (2021)
Rough
For me the most annoying aspect of this show is the washed out 24 FPS "cinema" aesthetic. I want my home renovation shows shot in clear crisp 4K. I kept hoping it would get better but it didn't. I lasted about 1 1/8 episodes. It's a very strange show. I'd like to interview the kids off camera and find out what's really going on. 😁
Boardwalk Empire (2010)
Soft Core Porn Period Farce
Boardwalk Empire is a soft core porn show masquerading as a period piece. The show consists of gratuitous sex scenes, costumes purchased at Burlington Coat Factory the day before filming, and dialogue riddled with anachronistic usage of the F word. Don't get me wrong, it's entertaining, but not for the right reasons.
After Life (2019)
Just ridiculous
What is just ridiculous? The talent within Ricky Gervais. This show is as poignant and beautiful as the office was silly and cutting. It is a testament to the intellectual genius and emotional depth that Ricky possesses. This show flows at such a soothing pace that unlike so many shows today you can just walk along with the characters as they progress through the human experiences. Treat yourself to watching the entire series.
Dopesick (2021)
Based on a true story
This is another case of stretching a story that could be told in under two hours into an eight part miniseries. I gave it a two instead of a one because I will watch anything with Michael Keaton in it, and the rest of the cast delivers stellar performances also.
The writing follows the typical progressive template, capitalism is evil, hard-working blue-collar people are trash, and by all means we must highlight the minuscule portion of Christians who cannot forgive homosexuality. If you're looking for woke and Bette Midler level of contempt for hard-working people living in challenging conditions this is your mini-series.
BlacKkKlansman (2018)
Sadly Mr. Lee ruined his own ending.
This is a compelling dramatization about what Ron Stallworth faced in his real life police career. However Mr. Lee took the opportunity at the end of the movie to reinforce a false narrative about what President Trump actually said about the tragic events at Charlottesville. Rather than show the full clip of the President's comments he cut out the part where he made it clear he was not talking about the people committing violence that day. It's a shame Mr. Lee chose not to accurately reflect what happened in that regard.
Ozark (2017)
Michael Bluth is Breaking Bad
If you don't have 30 hours to watch this over the course of three days then don't even bother starting. Once you start you will not want to finish until you were done with the 30th episode. It's that good!
