Personally, I find it hard to find an understanding on the true intentions here. Is there a message that is told in a complicated Sion fashion or is it a film that tries to mix horror with Sion's perverted fantasy. I really do enjoy films by this director, but I felt that he did go a bit overboard with the exposure here.
The film starts off with a bang and continues to bring certain intensity throughout the film. Even with moments of awkward calmness in between these horrific events, I felt uneasy as I knew something was lurking around the corner and can hit any moment. The incoherent storytelling does go crazy and was rather enjoyable to see at first. My problem was that with its strong opening, the film starts to go all over the place and the insanity becomes rather hilarious based on how it was presented. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but I had a few laughs on how poorly it was executed.
The thing that really made me give the grade I gave it was the actual reveal and possible message that he wanted to say as it lacked any sort of surprise and I ended up finishing the film being more confused rather than having any satisfaction.
The performances were mostly decent from the main cast, but the supporting actors were a bit wooden with their delivery. The production did look rather cheap and felt that most of the budget went to that shocking opening segment. It wasn't shot as well as his other films and I felt that there was more passion with his perverted shots more than his actual framing of the scene.
Overall, if you like these films that are obscure or want to enjoy a bloodbath that lacks any sort of clear narrative, then you might get a kick out of it. This definitely wasn't for me and I can't fully recommend it to people who are interested in this guy's work.
