89 Gator Mine (2007)
yet another great short from the mind of Josh Slates
89 Gator Mine's story and development is perfect Josh Slates' in that it appears at first to be wildly irreverent only to lead the viewer into a hilarious storyline that connects, in this case into modern day geopolitical issues through the use of the 1980's Red Scare, Nuclear Proliferation and perceived evil of the middle east as told through the community of 80's metal-heads and their armchair calculations by way of their perceptions of life and politics. Slates' makes us laugh at the ridiculousness of 80's culture and politics only to drive home the mockery of the current world-view of many US citizens. His work to me is always humorous, but '89 Gator Mine' hits home, domestically and abroad on many of the pertinent issues @ our current moment in history.
Gymkata (1985)
Incredibly Amazing
If you don't LOVE this film then you don't understand brilliance or appreciate it at its lowest common denominator. If you like BAD movies, this is your ticket. Classic Lines. And a president that looks way too much like Mel Brooks, but isn't. BEST 80's MOVIE? I vote, a resounding YES!! Gymkata, the coupling of Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas and some sweet training sequences to make him into a powerhouse karate expert, create the only prior to- thought about combo of GYMKATA! I rec'd setting down with some good friends, herbals, and cheap beers and having the best moving watching experience you may ever have. It's a love-hate reaction but if you love it, you will want to re-watch it as soon as it ends to learn those awesome moves and lines.
