Cohen's War (2004 TV Movie)
10/10
Overlooked!!
5 February 2007
This film gives a common subject that normal people don't recognize, and explain the issues through Patten's and Lee Cohen's eyes. Lee Cohen, an immigration lawyer, defends two Canadian refugees. Although the film is a short, it still goes in depth of the current moment in American. Both with the Cnadians coming to America, and Mexicans coming to America. I thought that Patten did a great job following and showing the problem this is. Also, like in Patten's other great documentary, "Words of My Perfect Teacher" it has a soft side that the audience has to chip away to get to the real meaning of the film. I think Patten has a good documentary style that has yet to be recognized, and the big audience has yet to find this treasure. I enjoyed the intensity and complexion of the piece, and hope many others like this will be made. Especially in this day n' age. Like I said this is very overlooked!! 10 out of 10!!

The best satire every made!!!
1 January 2007
The smooth, cool, and funny way that Kubrick made a real issue feel. the fact that it had enough seriousness to provide a deep and emotionally layered story, bouncing back and forth from character to character till Maj. "King" Kong rides the bomb. Other movies like "Fail Safe", directed by Sydney Lummet, basically had the same message, but it didn't have the cool feel that Dr. Strangelove supplied. This movie should have won at the Oscars. Kubrick should have been noticed as the great director he is, and Peter Sellers should have won for playing THREE roles!! I believe that everyone should see this movie, and any who doesn't should shut their pie holes!! 10 outta 10!!!!!!!

The Departed (2006)

A good return of the old Scorsese
6 October 2006
The Departed starts out with a scene that Scorsese does well. the mob boss walking through a shop, paying for other people things, and acting in charge of things. We soon meet the young Matt Damon character that grows up to be a cop that's in bed with the Irish mob. Then, we meet Leonardo DiCaprio's character, a cop who got kicked out of the police academy who gets a second chance to work against the mob. The story move right into story before you know it. Matt Damon's is soon a detective, with a kick ass apartment over looking Boston. For Leonardo, things are so smooth. Getting a chance to get at the Irish mob, he soon takes. When the mob boss, Jack Nicholson, asks Matt Damon's character to find out who the other cop is.

The story does one thing very well that original Chinese movie 'Infernal Affairs' did, also. The quick story pace. Of course Scorsese being Scorsese the story won't hang in a nothing scene. I love the differences from the original movie, and LOVED the fact that Scorsese didn't go through the Italian route. It was a very nice change, and a nice look back at what he was doing in the seventies and on. the movie provided a very well written story, and the movie was very well acted. This, I hope, will beat that Oliver Stone melodrama. 10 out of 10.

Oliver Stone does it again!
9 August 2006
I saw this movie after seeing Paul Greengrass's movie 'United 93' that came out earlier this year. I wasn't sure what Oliver Stone was going to do. Since it's about the same attack in all, but I was spellbound on how well this movie was done! This movie had excellent story down to the very marrow. The portrayal of real American heroes, and leadership left me moved. This movie also left me proud of my American roots.

The post-9/11 timing, I feel, can be very tricky if it comes out too early. I felt this movie came out at the right time.

Those wanting to see a good heroic movie. see this one! I love this movie! 10 out of 10!

Disappointed in Tony Scott!
4 August 2006
I am, as many are, a fan of Tony Scott films. When this movie came out I had high hopes that it would be like 'Man On Fire'. To find out that the movie it's the furthest thing from it! The story was treading water from the get go, and the choice of Mickey Rourke was not such such a good idea. And the whole 'arm'scene was too gratuitous!

The movie is centered around Kiera Kinghtly, and this movie reveals that she'll never become a movie star! The movie brought some of the worst acting ever.

I like Tony Scott's direction 'n all, but this takes the whole friggin cake! Sorry Ton, 1 out of 10!

The Killing (1956)

Flawless movie!
31 July 2006
'The Killing' is one of those movies that doesn't fool around with anything in the movie. Hell, the movie isn't even a hour and a half long! The tight 85 minute long movie moves so fast that it doesn't bother explaining one thing again.

'The Killing' of course like all Kubrick movies, was based on a book 'A Clean Break'. The movie is classic noir. The story is about a heist at the horse track, the deal is an inside job with employees at the horse track, and to mix it up, there's a woman involved 'with a dollar sign where most women have a heart!' - Johnny Clay 'The Killing'.

The movie is directed VERY well. Not one error in the movie. And to top it off, the novelist Jim Thompson does the voice-over narration! The movie is so good that I find myself watching it over, and over, and over, again! To say there's a mistake in the movie, is a lie! 10 out of 10!

Movies like this are killing the art of cinema!
30 July 2006
I was dragged to see this movie by a friend, and it was so awful that I had to leave early! I haven't done that since '8 Heads in a Duffle Bag'.(And that's sayin' something!) I really think Betty Thomas should've saved the energy, and made something less predictable and stupid! And this thing about popular chicks in high school has to go!

The movie was predictable from the second it started, to the moment the credits rolled! The whole idea (I know) isn't to make 'Citizen Kane', but to make a funny movie that fun to watch. AND IT WASN'T EVEN THAT! The jokes were really old, and the characters were more boring than the story!

In conclusion, if you see this movie, you obviously don't know what a good movie is. Save your money! 1 out of 10! Be glad it's at least getting a 1!

If your a fan, see this movie!
28 July 2006
This movie, I think, really distanced itself from the original television show. And that is a great thing! The movie made a strong point about drugs in the U.S., and how the problem is getting worse that better. Michael Mann really did his homework, and provided a canvas different from 'Traffic'.

I am very glad that the movie isn't the show. If that was the case, I might as well watch the show, and save my eight bucks. I thought this movie proved his ability to show an issue, exploit it, and make it very fun to watch! This movie is what every fan of Mann's craft has been looking for. though it may not be 'Heat', but it sin't a disappointment! 10 out of 10!

big blockbusters don't equal good movies!
25 July 2006
I thought the movie was over rated, to the max! The movie was way too long! Plus the fact that it didn't really even go anywhere. To me, the whole 'Keith Richards' shtick got real old! It's kind of like drinking sour milk from the fridge, putting it back, and hoping that it will taste better in the morning! The whole saga of pirate movies, without a grabbing story, a real waste of time. I know the third one was filmed at the same time as the second one, seems Hollywood is confident that this one will sell like the other two, and it probably will.

One thing that really turned the sight of the movie off to me was the sight of rotting flesh. To others, this may be the best thing they've ever seen, but to me, it was as horrible as the movie! I live with too many stupid things, why do I need one-eyed pirates rotting to death, while being chased by human squid things that have no hearts.

On another note, if only the editor took about thirty to forty minutes out of the movie it might be watchable. I'm not saying it isn't now, it was just done poorly. Maybe in the third one there will be spider pirates! 3 out of 10!

Mamet saves the day.
21 July 2006
David Mamet, one of the best writers today, made a series that expresses his talent as one of the best writer/directors! This series has a story that can keep giving, time and time again.

Especially a show that really expresses a dramatic POV of a US solider. The fact that it shows a secret agency that really does this adds more charm and appeal to this show.

To me, you can't go wrong with anything that David Mamet has done! Anyone who says this show is poorly done hasn't seen it!

Denis Haysbert really adds a cool quality that fans will love. And for those you are Michael Mann fans find enjoyment in this little treasure, as well.

I love the way the story moves quickly from one action to the other, classic Mamet. 10 out of 10!
