Death Note (2017)
Truly terrible
The original anime is well worth watching. That we ended up with this movie is a shame. It is neither clever, nor well acted, or directed. The characters are badly constructed, and the movie fails to capture the imagination. By itself it fails. As a homage to the Japanese series it fails.
Renaissance (2006)
Social commentary with painful delivery
The final twist will probably be the final straw if you manage to weather this hackneyed venture into social commentary.
Visually it has some merit, and stylistically it borrows from Bladerunner for one, though it introduces few if any new ideas, simply nostalgia for those pieces that came before it.
The black and white animation is slightly jarring at first, and I never quite managed to shake the impression that it simply is a ploy to deal with an inability at creating realism otherwise.
As commentary on immortality, it holds up its own preconceptions as truth without being bold enough to explore the theme in depth, which is where the final twist fails.
This movie however fails before this due to its slow unimaginative pace, lack of narration and failed character development.
