Tristan + Isolde (2006)
Brilliant!!! Rufus Sewell is so hot in this film!!!
To be perfectly honest, I only went to see this film because it had Rufus Sewell in it. But I thought it was a lovely film. It is not one of these crappy teen comedies that floods our cinema screens.
I had never heard of the true story of Tristan and Isolde, after watching the movie I researched a little on it and found it so much harder to understand, although the story was a little off the plot (and which original story in Hollywood isn't changed??) It was still made to be brilliantly entertaining.
I thought that Sophie Myles played Isolde well, the same for James Franco for Tristan. However, it may seem the lovely mushy love romance that the trailers show, but it really isn't. By the end of the film you end up not caring so much about their relationship and feeling sooo sorry for Lord Marke (Rufus Sewell YAY!!)
Isolde is won in some sort of Medieval competition by Tristan in honour for Lord Marke, but both of them see each other behind Lord Marke's back. And he really likes Isolde.
Brilliant film, a definite MUST SEE!!! If you love Rufus Sewell, it's one of the best films he's in. Don't see it if you just like James Franco and Sophie Myles though. When this comes out on DVD I'm going to be the first to buy it Definitely!!!!
Charles II: The Power & the Passion (2003)
Excellent
I have got this film on DVD and have watched it so many times that I know most of the words. The continuously gorgeous Rufus Sewell plays the king himself. He plays the part to perfection. He shows the audience the trauma of decision making for a king can be, trying to please all people and all religions, while trying to please his own family and court/ministers plus dealing with huge problems like money and religion.
Helen Mcrory (Barbra Villiers) plays her character VERY VERY well. She is cunning and conniving towards the queen, it shows that she (and other women) can easily make the king fold through being a woman, which of course is not expected in Kings.
The film does tend to focus on his mistresses and sex life, however this is the entire idea of the story, if you want a film about what life in general was like around this time then research it. The whole idea of this story was to try to understand his emotions, seeing what made him tick, trying to view Charles as a person rather than a king.
It does skip a couple of scenes but obviously what the directors have skipped is not important, you have to just guess that time has moved on and so have people around Charles. Or the imagination is up to you I suppose. Its definitely worth watching this film and a good choice to buy this film.
Mary Bryant (2005)
Brilliant, it portrays the life of Mary Bryant extremely well
I only had a chance to watch this programme today, however I thought it was absolutely fantastic. The voyage of a young woman to Australia as a convict was amazing. Not only was this film based on facts and true stories but it also showed compassion. You got the chance to look in on Mary's feelings. I felt so sorry for Mary, she was convicted for stealing money, but knowing her social class, you could understand that she was trying to provide for her family, even if it was the wrong way to go about it.
Romola Garai played Mary very well. You could see all sides of Mary's personality, her compassion and love for her two children and husband, but also her more cunning side, using Lt Ralph Clarke on two occasions, the first being to avoid the conditions on the boat. The second time she used him was worse, she lead him on to believe that she had feelings for him (and as you would have already found out) and he has feelings for her. Both Jack Davenport (Lt Ralph Clarke) and Alex O'Loughlin (Will Bryant) performed their roles very well. Jack Davenport shows the audience how sensitive he is towards Mary and how easily he can fold for her, yet as a Lt he can be a hard/tough person.
I would highly recommend watching this i thought it was brilliant
