No One Will Save You (2023)
So many plot holes but entertaining nevertheless
There are so many illogical moments in this movie that are somewhat annoying, but I also wonder if they were intentional to cause audience reactions, I don't know. Nonetheless, it is still very entertaining to watch. I love designs and variations of the aliens as well as their communication methods that are quite alien-like. I also like how they made aliens' behaviors confusing since I would imagine that aliens wouldn't act how humans would because they would have a whole set of different reasoning far different from that of humans.
Also, as to what truly happened in the end, I have to disagree with another reviewer's take, which to me is overly simplistic. My take is this.
First, aliens' goal wasn't to kill humans. They wanted to take over their bodies for whatever cosmic reason they had. The fact that the host is given a sweet dream, while under their control, suggests that these aliens don't necessarily want to hurt/torture other beings. This is supported by the fact that they didn't kill the main character even after she killed several of their kind. In addition, if you pay attention, you'd notice that the way she accidentally killed her childhood friend is very similar to the way she accidentally killed the first alien, one blow to the side of a head. I think the aliens needed to determine if she was some kind of a special threat after she managed to kill many of them by luck. Instead, they learned that she was not a significant threat and that she only killed the first alien by accident with subsequent kills being acts of self-defense. In addition, they learned that her pain was very important to her as it was a reflection of her love for her childhood friend, to whom she continued to write letters to for all these years. This is why the main character managed to resist the mind takeover too. She didn't want to be happy. She wanted to continue to feel the pain and guilt, through which she could maintain her love for and connection to her childhood friend. I think the aliens decided that it would be too cruel to take this pain away from the main character because they realized how important this pain was to her, which is a form of love that is both beautiful and gruesome at the same time. So in the end, because they weren't interested in killing humans, they weren't going to kill her. And, they now didn't want to mind control her either, so the only option left was to just let her be. I think this makes far more sense.
Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities (2022)
I don't get the hype. Mediocre at best.
I had a high hope for this show based on raving reviews. Unfortunately this was a huge letdown. I am now convinced that there must have been a lot of shill reviews/ratings online, or maybe fans are biased to like this author's show. The stories felt half-baked. I can appreciate that it can be challenging to film a rich story in under 1 hour, but still I've seen far better anthologies than this. It leaves you with "Wait. That's it?" There is nothing clever or impressive about this show either. In fact, many plots in this show feel rather silly than scary. What's worse, quality of computer graphics is not quite there either. It's not bad, but you an tell that the details are rather rough in many places. They look more like what you see in video games. All in all, if you have time to kill and don't have anything better to watch, this may do the job for you, but keep your expectation low.
Extraterrestrial (2014)
Good potential ruined by mediocre acting and poor audio editting
I wanted this movie to be good because I love alien/space movies. But, this movie was annoying to watch. It's hard to enjoy a movie when acting isn't done well. Also, there were so many scenes where characters reactions were just way to unnatural, which further distracts you from the story. But, more than mediocre acting or unnatural scripts, the most annoying part was the audio. The audio level fluctuates way too much in this movie. I had to adjust the volume level many times throughout the movie because it would get ridiculously loud. I guess someone thought we all liked to blast music in our cars or something, but that's not the case here. Movies should keep audio levels more consistent so audience can enjoy them without being assaulted by unnecessarily loud music.
House of Darkness (2022)
Horrifyingly bad
I'm actually impressed that they managed to get this film into an actual production. It's extremely bad. It's one of the slowest plots ever made without any substance. Just some pointless stretched out scenes and boring conversations. I think actors did their best, but the script was so bad that even good acting couldn't make up for the disaster of a movie this is. Many lines sound like something high schoolers wrote. So cheap, uninteresting, and shallow. I only managed to watch till the end by starting to play a game on my phone because this movie was painfully boring. Then, the final climax was even worse. Blood effect was done wrong. They overdid it, which made it look too fake. They also did a poor job with fake flesh/skin, which stretched like a rubber that it is. If you want to scare people, you need to make it look real. Human skin/flesh doesn't stretch like a rubber. Also, even though they (tried) to build up horror by mentioning a slow and painful death, they portrayed a quick and boring death. It made no sense for the first strike to be on his jugular vein. The first strike being a fatal strike completely betrayed its own plot line and expectation of slow, painful, and torturous death. This was truly one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life.
Goodbye, Butterfly (2021)
Good potential completely ruined by bad acting and lack of depth
I have never bothered to write a review on any movies before, but I found myself needing to do so for this one because it was so frustrating to see this movie's potential not coming to light. Like others pointed out, acting is really bad. For what was supposed to be an upsetting or a serious scene, I laughed because of how bad acting was. With that said, this movie could have done so much better if they used better actors and also built characters and audience's attachment to the little girl. Instead, they killed her right away. They should have built the story up more to allow for more emotional investment in the girl and the father before killing her. They also should have filmed a much more emotional scene over her death. But, then again, with bad acting, it would have been a total disaster, so maybe they couldn't... Anyhow, if done right, this movie could have been actually good.
Legacies (2018)
Decent but more geard toward teenagers
The main review that's been upvoted here feels like a shilled review. 10 out 10 stars? I don't think so. It's decent, but it's not that good. I like the actors and characters, but the plot cheapens everything. The plot is not very well-thought. It feels like a story that some teenagers decided to put together with insufficient knowledge/experience to make it sound. It's a good show to watch to kill time. There is also a big similarity between this show and Haven. I wouldn't be surprised if the author copies aspects of Haven and morphed them just enough that people wouldn't notice. If you watched Haven, you'll know what I mean. I'm not saying it's a bad show. It's just that it lacks originality and plot is underdeveloped.
