Star Trek: Voyager: One Small Step (1999)
Misunderstood Themes
This is a misunderstood episode. One reviewer has said it would be expected if Tom acted irrationally but not Chakotay. It was explained that the Mars missions were a passion of his so yes he would be wanting the module and put it ahead of their well being. Meribor another reviewer says "And Seven brings the body back all for them to bury him in space. I think Kelly would've rather stayed with his ship, his dream." Anyone who has been in the service will know that the burial at the end is a high honor. The speech shows that seven is growing as an individual and connected with someone else. This episode is deep on many levels. You have to have some sort of analytic mind rather than "oh it's a show that makes you think. I won't like it." These people are explorers and will put their lives in danger to gain knowledge.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: I Only Have Eyes for You (1998)
Over reacting
First off I do not intend to spoil anything, but am using the disclaimer anyways. This episode has been reviewed more than once and so the merits have been judged. That being said I hate people who use POP psychobabble to review things. The Ghost was 17 at the time of his "death" which in most states makes him in the age of consent if not legally an adult. Yes he had a love affair with a teacher. Big deal. She did not seem to be taking advantage of him and there was no evidence put forth in the episode that he took advantage of her to get good grades. Joss did nothing wrong portraying this "relationship." She realized that it was a mistake and that the student needed to live his own life and date girls his own age but he was obsessed it was NOT her fault, and only a Right wing bible thumper would read more in a story meant to be about redemption and forgiveness, in my opinion. All that being said the acting was tremendous as was the story. David and Sarah hit it out of the park with their final scenes together.
The Laramie Project (2002)
this is not the play or us
This was a good film. When I saw this movie on T.V. the first thing that went through my mind was it was good but the actors did not portray the people of Wyoming accurately. Most of us do not use words like "Intoxificated" like it was implyed in the fireside bar scene. I also saw the play here in Laramie and as the last performance of Mr. Kaufman's original cast. The play was the most powerful play I have seen in a long time and was surprised when the movie did not measure up to the play. The Movie did not do the play justice. As I am only a student living in Laramie I can not believe the residents of Laramie allowed the movie to be released under these conditions. During the last performance it was filmed by H.B.O. and it was told to us the movie would be as close to the play as possible and seeing that it was more hype then the play I was disapointed. I would like to say also the people of Laramie do not act like the way they are portrayed.
