Doctor Who: The Family of Blood (2007)
What's best about modern Television
I don't comment often - check :-) This second part of the story really said it all in the last ten minutes. I've either got a really dusty house or tears came up due to the end. What started out as simple Sci-Fi fare ended as a real pause for thought. 'Light' drama can sometime be the most powerful medium and this does it all without being heavy handed or moralistic.
This should be compulsory viewing in schools.
Quite apart from which it's one of the more enjoyable episodes of Doctor Who.
We've had Tim and Daisy from "Spaced" in Doctor Who now so roll on Mike, Marsha, Brian and Tyres!
Manhunter (1986)
The best and I'll tell you why...
First the bad news, the soundtrack dates this film almost as much as the fashions. Then you cut through all that to what is the essence of the film-the characters and how they interract. This is where the latest version is at a loss. William Petersen's scenes with Hannibal Lecter work so much better. Here you don't get Hopkins and his histrionics. The Brian Cox Lecter chills you because he appears so normal-yet we see just how insane he can be. I lack the articulation to do this film justice but trust me, watch both and decide. There's only going to be one adaptation of the book "Red Dragon" in my DVD collection.
Leviathan (1989)
Groovy
A mish-mash of Alien and the 1982 version of the Thing that delivers if you enjoyed either or both of those films. The effects are up to the job but as time moves on they are dating somewhat (unlike the Thing). Peter Weller gives his usual great performance with all the cast being believable in their roles.
Jake Speed (1986)
Come on people
This film is harmless escapist fun. Something the recent Tomb Raider film lacked. I can't wait to get the DVD. How can people give this a low score and still go and see Titanic without a guilty conscience I do not know. Anything with Karen Kopins in her underwear has got to rate an extra point or two!
Trancers (1984)
What kind of a name is that?
Yes it's a B-movie but hey I'd watch this before any film with Tom Cruise in it! The film works on so many levels and the hero has a couple of nifty tricks up his sleeve. Tim Thomerson (along with likes of Brion James) have been sadly overlooked by the studios and consequently their films vary from dire to brilliant. This one nears the brilliant. Watch this film and enjoy it. Just don't watch the sequels. That way suffering lies...
