Frasier (2023)
Stop with the laughter track!
It's slightly amusing but I would find it far funnier without the asinine laughter track. It's as if we're being told it's funny - as if our judgement counts for nothing. I don't like being told if something is funny. I will make that decision on my own thank you very much.
Lame, tired script. Not a patch on the original series (which I've just reacquainted myself with). Poor selection of actors too - they're not that believable and don't really elicit any empathy at all.
All in all, a bit of a waste of time, effort and money. Why did they bother? Have I written enough letters yet? X
3 / 10.
Dune (2021)
Script autogenerated by computer, delivered by automatons
I freely admit I'm not the most empathetic of people so I found it tremendously difficult to care one jot for what was going on to the characters in this film. This wasn't helped by the stilted dialogue which appeared to have been written by a computer. One aspect of a film is to invite the audience to suspend their disbelief that they're watching actors on a screen, but this was rendered almost impossible in this case by the script - you certainly didn't get the impression that the characters wanted to say the words they were saying - only that they were actors reciting what they'd been told to say.
Constantine (2005)
Absolute garbage
How anybody could give this steaming pile of tripe anything more than a very generous 4 / 10 leaves me baffled. If you think of any desirable quality that a film might strive to achieve, this has none.
The Irishman (2019)
Oh god - is there still an hour to go?
Very poor indeed, especially considering all the on-screen (and off-screen!) talent. It's as if they're just going through the motions for old time's sake.
Black Mirror: Smithereens (2019)
Very poor indeed
Some of the Black Mirror episodes are stunning in any number of ways. This one is stunning in no way - very pedestrian and not at all out of the ordinary, which is what Black Mirror should be, and has often been in the past.
And as for its rating on IMDb; if you ever wondered whether they're worth the electrons they're written on, here's your answer. To people who give this 10 / 10; is it really in the top 10% of all the films you've ever seen
Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (2017)
Hard to know at what age this is pitched
I went with my five year old daughter and she was obviously getting bored by about two thirds of the way through.
Some of the humour was a little beneath her but at the same time, there were sections I thought a tad scary.
The story was a bit loose and everything was rather too hectic. But I'm not a five year old I suppose.
In summary, I've sat through many children's films, most of which were better in terms of plot, nuance, implementation, etc.
Five year old's dad (aged 50).
Richard III (1995)
I was hoping for great things ...
Having read some of the reviews, I was very much looking forward to a 'modern version' of Richard III. However, it turned out to be every bit as dreadful as all the other Shakespearian plays / films I've seen. (I have to admit here that I hate Shakespeare and had vowed never to watch any more ever again. But I let myself be seduced by the prospect of something "a bit different".)
I then had a look as the reviews from people who didn't like it and they all struck a chord. They managed to sum up the film's many deficiencies far better than I could, so I will simply give it a 3 and suggest you read some of the critical reviews before committing to this film.
And if you want something worthwhile of the Bard's to watch, I would certainly recommend "Cunk on Shakespeare" (BBC2).
