Scream 3 (2000)
Better than 2, but nothing can surpass original!
21 August 2000
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER AHEAD I have been dying to see this film ever since rumours were being touted about concerning cast members and cliffhanger endings. When I finally got an illegal pirate copy, I shoved it in the machine as soon as I got home ( I sound like a bit of a loser don't I, but I just really wanted to see it). The opening scene lacked the gore and shock horror that the other two had. However, as the film developed, it was evident that it had a much better storyline than the sequel. The paradoxical humour is taken to a new level in this last installment and the movie within a movie idea was a clever way of approaching the task. This is not always a good thing because this film tends to make you laugh not scared. One criticism is that there are a lot of characters in this film that are not allowed to develop, and are just there to be killed (in relatively gore-free scenes). Also, I would just like to praise the way script writers managed to incorporate Randy, and through his appearance allowed them to give us an extremely shocking and unpredictable ending. Overall 8/10

Surpassed original by a mile!
13 July 2000
This film is definitely one of the best films of the year! As a classic John Woo film (lots of action and fighting, not a plot that is likely to up for an oscar), it should attract not only Mission Impossible fans but also die hard fans of the diverse director. The film begins, and all the people expecting action are relieved, as we are not only confronted with major fighting scenes, but Tom Cruise climbing up the side of a cliff. This particular scene takes your breath away, as you hang on Tom Cruise' every movement, and pray he doesn't fall, even though you know he wont. The film moves on and we are treated (well, at least the John Woo fans are) to a spectacle of action, stunts, special effects and beautiful direction, all leading to a climax. The final 20 minutes have you on the edge of your seat, even though you know a convenient ending is inevitible. As Tom Cruise battles it out with his arch enemy played by Dougray Scott, John Woo's talent for directing action movies becomes even more apparent.

I would also like to mention Thandie Newton, as she played the perfect 'damsel-in-distress' and performed her key role in the film with particular conviction (not to mention how hot she looks).

Overall this film has a fairly weak plot, but who cares, we weren't expecting an emotional masterpiece. I give 8/10.

Scream (1996)
Thrilling, refreshing horror tale
18 April 2000
Watching this film for the first time in the basement of a four story house, with no-one else in was the perfect setting for this film. From the very first scene I was gripped and I could not wait for the climax to discover the murderer and his motives. The script was extremely original, as they had purposely set out to parodie the typical slasher style movie.

It was written in a way that deceived and tricked and had you jumping out of your seats but also laughing at the paradoxical black humour. For anyone looking for a good horror film with a twist, you won't find a better one than Scream.

Overall I give it 9.5/10
