Hanging Up (2000)
it all adds up to nothing
when this was released at the cinema I read that it wasn't very good, so I didn't see it. But when looking through the video store I decided to give it a go. Why? Well all the ingredients looked right. I like all the leads, Keaton as director sounded ok (surely she must have picked up something from Woody after all these years). I've liked all of Nora Ephron,s films to date, so what happened? When I saw that Keaton was playing the other's sisters I lol'ed and said "meg and lisa's mother more like". The film itself was really poor all round. Story, acting, directing and even continuity (how many times does meg have to put those roses in the vase?). I was bored basically
1/10
Le violon rouge (1998)
Interesting, but not engrossing.
This film is well made with a great concept, looks beautiful (great cinematography), has beautiful music and a little twist at the end, but it falls short of a masterpiece. I feel each story was too rushed with the Shanghai story, potentially the most interesting, over almost before it has begun. The Viola family is my favourate of classical instruments, and the musical score is delightful. Worth a watch (and a listen)
5/10
Tootsie (1982)
Great Comedy
This is one of the best and funniest comedies ever. I think its up there right next to Some Like It Hot (and not just because they both have men dressing as women, why DO we find that funny?). I laugh out loud every time I see it. And every time I see it I wonder why Teri Garr didn't win the Oscar. I don't really like Jessica Lange that much, her character is too mousey, besides it really is a Leading Role rather then 'supporting'.
Blackrock (1997)
very good film
Spoiler Alert This film is very well done. I would have liked to see the film leave the murder unresoved and showing the community closing up a bit more. From what I understand no real resolution came out of the true murder this film is based on. To see the killer take his own life and provide closure (if only for the audiences sake) seems a little to much like a "Hollywood ending". Other than that its a thought provoking and emotional film. The characters very believeable. The way they speak and even a "surfy" accent of sorts. Great perfomances by all.
Educating Rita (1983)
one of the best in its genre
We've seen this story before and since, but this is one of the best in the student/mentor genre. Julie Walters is wonderful and her character is so believeable and real. She is the heart and soul of the film. Caine is good too. A lovely film.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
Nice night for it.
I have seen this movie maybe 20 times and never get sick of it. I laugh just as much now as I did when I first saw it at the cinema in 94. It was the first gay themed movie I'd seen and because it was so popular to the mainstream I could see it and quote it for months (years) afterwards that no-one cared. Sure these characters are steriotypes of gay men, but we have "the Sum Of Us" to counter act that. You're just ment to watch it and p**s your self laughing. Not every gay film has to be "real" or serious, sometimes we just have to laugh!
ps. I went to Broken Hill, and that pub with the pianted walls is even more "tack-a-ramma" in the flesh!
Shrek (2001)
cold have been so much better
There were so many possibilities for gags that just didn't appear. Instead of just giving all the lines to the donkey there could have been a great oppertunity to have more fun with the fairytale creatures. Mike Myers voice talent was waisted. And I know its aimed at kids and plot isn't of the upmost importance, but why was Farquaad getting rid of the fairytale folk? I guess it was so he could have his prefect world, but it wasn't really explored. And please, no more Matrix jokes!
State and Main (2000)
not as funny as it thought it was
I think that this film is only hilarious to those in the film Industry. As just a film fan I found it amusing, but over all bland. It was too slowly paced, there were predictable gags, plot lines and characters. Parkers performance was fun but it was too much like watching "Carrie" from Sex and the City.
The Wedding Planner (2001)
silly
J-Lo; shes no Sandy Bullock or Julia Roberts. Leave Rom-Com to the experts. And whats with putting "love Don't Cost A Thing" over the end credits? How does that fit with the film? I think someone wants to sell a few more soundtrack albums!
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
not a coen great
I love the Coens humour, i love most of their movies, but this one left me saying ho-hum. It was enjoyable and querky but nothing special. The screenplay just seemed to wonder on without much direction. Redeeming moment; Clooney's performance (the Cary Grant of our time?)and the truly Coen-esque ending. 5/10
Traffic (2000)
best picture
How can a film win oscars for Director, screenplay, an acting award, and editing and not win best picture? I think in years to come this will be remembered as the one that got away, it will be remembered long after gladiator is forgotten
Keeping the Faith (2000)
It spoke to me
I just bought KTF on video to add to my collection. Its funny I look at my video colletion, at the movies I've decided that I like so much that I want to keep them forever and then I think what rating out of 10 i give them. Not all of them are perfect, but all of them are perfectly enjoyable.
KTF really spoke to me, which is strange because Im not at all religious (in any faith). I think what spoke to me was that its about choices we make and commitments. Milos Formans character has the most true line in the film. "Whether you are a priest or get married to a woman, its a commitment that you have to make again and again". Meaning that there is always temptation after we have made a commitment, a moment that we question ourself, but we must stay true to that commitment we made.
The chemistry between the three leads if wonderful, one of the best on screen trio's I have ever seen, and the supporting cast if great too. This film has some technical flaws, but its enjoyable and has some serious things to say for a supposed lightweight comedy. 8/10
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Dumber than Dumb
If I didn't see this movie with a bunch of friends I would have walked out. I only laughed at one thing (the cow) and the rest of the time I was just waiting for it to end, which it never seemed to to! It was like this movie was made up of all the "jokes" the Farley Bros. decided to leave out of "Mary" (and for good reason).
The Next Best Thing (2000)
Like Madonnas acting abilities, OK but not great.
I am a huge Madonna fan but even I must concede that she can not act! Ive always defened her acting (sometimes ok but never great) but I was cringing at some of her lines. The film itself too was only ok. Haveing read bad reviews it was slightly better than I expected. The screenplay was very mixed up especially when it came to time and dates (eg the head stone date said 1992 and the child was conceived after the funeral and only aged 6 by 1999!) The was an interesting tableau durring the "getting drunk" scene that was good to look at but didn't fit into the rest of the films structure.
I have to say that the soundtrack is probably the best thing about the whole film, very modern and up beat. In all the film was watchable mildly enjoyable 5/10 and mainly for Madonna/Everett fans.
