Grace of My Heart (1996)
I love this movie!
I love rock and roll movies set in the 60s, and this is a fun one. Illeana Douglas is wonderful as Edna Buxton/Denise Waverly, and yes, she's only loosely based on Carole King (makes me think a bit of Carly Simon, too, since she's an heiress). I think John Turturro is a hoot as Joel Millner, of course, he's always great. Eric Stoltz and Matt Dillon are impressive, too, although the movie loses some impetus and impact when Denise moves to California with Jay (Dillon's character). Still, it's one of my favorites--I just received my DVD the other day and watched all of the special features that evening. It's a fun (albeit sometimes sad)movie!!!
Rear Window (1954)
Great movie!
I love Hitchcock films, and this is my favorite! It's still scary and suspenseful, even though I've seen it several times. It's also very sexy and there's not a bit of nudity. James Stewart and Grace Kelly are wonderful. Definitely worth renting if you've never seen it (or if you have)!
Daydream Believers: The Monkees' Story (2000)
Why re-do the show segments we'd already seen?
I am a huge Monkees fan, from the time I was a toddler (I was 1 when the show premiered). I've seen every episode, read books, own box sets--you get the picture. I was excited when I saw that VH1 was going to air this movie, and kept an open mind while watching, knowing that no biopic ever gets it all right, and since I know more about the subject than the average viewer, I didn't want to judge too harshly. This one was definitely a mixed bag, a mostly disappointing one.
The movie wouldn't have been too bad, except for the ending--sooooo goofily bad! And why waste time re-doing segments from the show, particularly the entire "Daydream Believer" video? Plus, combining the creators into one guy was weird. The cast was pretty good, though, especially the actor who played Mike.
It's fine to watch if you're killing time and happen upon it on TV. It's just not one worth making an effort to see.
