The Fog (2005)
Is there a market that actually enjoys movies like these?
Being a fan of the original, I had to at least hope...alas, believe what the other reviews say, and just avoid this altogether. Lessee how this stacks up to today's typical teen movie: you have the young hairless hunk with his moment of bare chest, the anorexic blonde who sleeps with him first chance she gets and goes looking for spooks in dark places (of course with a shot of her in her undies), way too much CGI, and a once-good story now hacked to pieces by adding here and subtracting there. Does today's youth really like this junk, or is Hollywood getting desperate?!? It seems the old tried-and-true "less is more" is lost on modern day tripe like this. True horror and Carpenter fans, you've been warned..
Nurse Betty (2000)
actors couldn't save it
I kept looking for the unexpected throughout this movie, but got only the predictable. It's movies like this that make one wonder how so many powerful stars signed on. Betty's character was never fully created, the opening murder was too graphic and gruesome for a non-black comedy, and some areas just didn't make sense. My guess is that most people who watch this movie will say they could've skipped it.
Toy Story 2 (1999)
if you liked Toy Story 1...
If you even remotely like Toy Story 1, you'll probably like this film. I highly recommend renting on DVD, if just to watch the "outtakes". All the main character voices returned, the script was strong, and the mature humour hilarious!
Undercover Blues (1993)
Cute movie, Quaid and Turner good chemistry
I don't know why so many IMDB'ers ranked this lower--it isn't meant to be a "edge of your seat" political thriller, rather a comedic opportunity for Dennis Quaid, and a kick-butt role for Kathleen Turner. I found their chemistry to be quite good together, and I enjoyed their relationship. Sure, Quaid's humour can wear on you if you are expecting him to be serious, but this isn't that kind of movie! Watch this one if you like either of them, and especially if you like Stanley Tucci--classic humour from him. It doesn't bowl you over like a Inspector Clouseau, but is actually good older family-type humor/adventure.
The Manhattan Project (1986)
Pretty good "cold war" thinker.
This movie has some real quotables in it that boosted the ratings for me. Christopher Collet's character is a little too perfect, and at points you wonder what his intentions (and the plot) really are, but at least this keeps the movie somewhat unpredictable.
Batman & Robin (1997)
Not sure how this made it to the box office
This movie had great special effects (except for the snakeplant), and good acting from George Clooney, Chris O'Donnell, Arnold, and Michael Gough (Alfred). Unfortunately, the script was horrible, exacerbating "Batman Forever"'s plunge down the wrong path. The movie is predictable and corny, and everything happens too easily and too timely. Another disappointment is that the majority of the "Bat gadgets" are just more and more cables catching people from falling, rather than the variety found in the Tim Burton movies.
Titanica (1992)
Not what it appears to be--only about 5 minutes total of IMAX underwater wreck footage.
Not what it appears to be, only about 5 minutes total of IMAX underwater footage. Narration by Leonard Nimoy is good, but it is a typical "life and death of Titanic", rather than exploiting the actual IMAX photography that it's title infers. I was hoping to see at least 70% of the film as actual underwater sea wreckage. They never even showed pictures of the propellers, although I have seen still-frame IMAX shots of them on the internet, so I know they exist. Anyone looking for even moderate amounts of footage will be disappointed.
True Stories (1986)
slow moving, no tangible plot, but great Byrne-esq amble.
There is no real plot here, so don't expect something that keeps you wildly entertained. This is a great movie to approach without expectations. I enjoyed the mundane lives and random Byrne comments. John Goodman was excellent for those who enjoy him, and his facial expressions at the talent show are worth re-looks. I recommend this movie for the type of person who enjoyed "Gas, Food, & Lodging"--it's an enjoyable tale (albeit slow and with no direction) with interesting characters. I think Talking Heads fans would enjoy it.
