Prizzi's Honor (1985)
Hickey Loggia & A. Huston Steal this Movie
While the story may be told numerous times. John Huston's brought a new meaning to the 'Mob Genre'..
Women excellent in traditional male roles.
K.Turner excellent as the Vamp wife girlfriend hit woman.
Angelica with not that much on screen time was perfection, reason she garnered the Best Supporting Oscar.
William Hickey stole the entire movie. Over a thirty/forty year period now the aging Don has Evolved.. His mannerisms can not be described as comedy, nor stereo typical of any nature. He can be ICILY cruel without violence yet the recipient knows as he stirs up fear.
The best line of the movie ' Charley she gotta go.... And YOU gotta do it'. While this breaks me up it also shows how he remains totally in Control.. People will say he is not Italian. He portrayed an Italian Mafia Don with expertise even outdone Robert Loggia (A Sicilian). Remember Brando was not Italian as well.
Further Loggia quietly stole many scenes IE; Reading Charley's letter to Dominic & Pop Partana, & that classic elevator Groping scene. Yet he knew his father was the undisputed head of the family. 'Capo Di tutti Capo'
Now Nicholson's portrayal was to much over the top. I believe he had Novocain injections upper lip area to maintain that stupid look.
Jack is a great actor & he could have completed that role without any Brando cotton in cheeks effect. He made him appear overly dumb.
Remember the story line he was born to the Don's longtime friend, he became the Don'd Godson. They brought him up to become a mob member (Birthday gift brass knuckles), later the Blood oath with the then younger Don Corrado.
This was a sleeper hit, I do enjoy it having seen it numerous times.
Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984)
She is a Southern Lady
I have seen most of the Tarzan episodes. Certainly the rated X with O'Keeffe & Bo Derek, which is totally deplorable.
I have seen this version several times since it was originally shown.
All the cast had memorable parts, great acting the Ape sequences.
Last night I viewed same on Spanish station and other than some French dialog all in Spanish.
As far as Hudson not wanting Andie's voice he did nothing until the very end. He viewed the dailies and could have hired a dialog coach.
It seems silly that a story about apes and a man raised by them all speaking gibberish that Hudson attacked Andie. The story line in the movie was that she was an American cousin. The last time I checked Carolina was in the USA.
She was beautiful in movie and her eyes, and gorgeous hair, alabaster skin mystified all us males. She did not have to resort to Bo's level.
She has remained a LADY throughout the rest of her career and should look at this movie (half her life ago),as a starting point. Her performance, sincerity, made this movie enjoyable, believable that a half wild man could ascertain her inner beauty.
Great sending point for Sir Richardson, he did steal the movie.
The Boys from Brazil (1978)
AH Sweet Mystery of Life.
Possibly due to age most reviewers do not comprehend the English accents portrayed. In most earlier (30's thru 60's) all the actors whom portrayed Germans, Nazis, or east Europeans where either English or English trained actors. IE: George Sanders, Basil Rathbone, Yes even James Mason. The great Conrad Veidt, (Major Strasser Casa Blanca) whom actually was German Jew was type casted in USA.
This film is great. When I watch same again & again I actually am Hoping Mengele wins out. This is only due to the fact the great out of character performance of Gregory Peck. Only a MAN with his real life Calibre of excellence can convey this Emotion from me, all the while I knowingly understand Mengele is EVIL Personified. Olivier performance was mediocre at best. Please note this film had many good character actor whom are German. With that contrast I understand why some viewers depict Peck's accent as Ham.
Remember it is only a film. The possibilities of cloning only are needed to excite us movie watchers.. Just as the Omen with anti Christ
and Sting with potential corruption of our children to commit illegal scams, only shows that potential of excitation and our ability to protect our children should be Paramount.
Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Identity (2005)
obnoxious doctor gets it in the end.
Starts typical SVU that evolves with strong almost unbelievable circumstances.. I figured the scenario early but that twist at the end was extremely satisfying AND REWARDING..
I could not believe the stupidity of the parents. First their child/children with the police and later discovering (SPOILER) with the therapist.. Great the show is finally giving the ME Dr. Melinda Warner more screen time and viable roles Fantastically portrayed by actress TAMARA TUNIE.
Strong portrayal by fifteen year old Reilly.
Dialogue between Elliot & OBNOXIOUS Dr. Blair one of the reasons this Version of Law & Order shines.
After Office Hours (1935)
When Actors & Actresses could ACT !
THIS MOVIE HAS ALL COMPONENTS OF Movie-making ROLLED UP IN ONE.
IF YOU HEARD THIS ON RADIO you would have Enjoyed it immensely. The addition of the CAMERA displaying
GLORIOUS STARS even before they were household names IS ICING ON THE CAKE. The real Stars of the movie are the writers dialog, very aptly performed especially by GABLE & BENNETT. BILLIE BURKE,STU ERWIN, WILLIAM DEMAREST early years shows why the became longtime favorite characters.. YES OF COURSE MARGARET DUMONT. When I saw her I kept looking for GROUCHO. The MOVIE PLOT is second, third, fourth(-dery) SOCIETY SHOWING EVERYONE IN FORMAL CLOTHES before modern fashion designers ruined it by COOKIE CUTTER (ESPECIALLY MENS WING COLLAR TUX SHIRTS), Extremely Enjoyable. I RATE THIS MOVIE OVER ALL SCALE OF 1 TO 10 A 25.
Tara Road (2005)
Women are Superior
It may have started slow, however the BUILD UP was worth waiting.
The PLOT is not two strangers sharing prospective homes in different countries, NO NO, it is how they each cope first with their own grief and sorrows and then how they assist one another. When Marilyn overheard how not only did he cheat on Ria, he also cheated with her best friend.
Again over hearing the statement 'Jack Boot' describing Marilyn whom originally horrified by such remark, later utilized same to show who was in charge. When Marilyn met boss' wife and they hatched a plan to salvage RIA's home and smartly done around the dining room table with all characters present, was a STROKE OF GENIUS..
Again no jumping in & out of bed with all actors, just plausible story telling. I do not understand the Colm character. Possibly because every time I see Rea I think of the "Crying Game"..To pair him up with Andie MacDowell is ludicrous as she is 'CLASS PERSONIFIED'. I was happy that no involvement became a better story then jumping into bed..
Quo Vadis (1951)
AIDA DOES IT BETTER !!
NO SPOILERS NEEDED HERE. All opera fans will notice that AIDA was virtually copied here. mmencing with the chariot entering the main city with the conquering hero. Radames in Aida, Marcus in Quo Vadis. The emperor both tales offered a king's ransom. Both heroes wanted their lady. Aida was a slave girl who was a former princess.. Lygia a slave hostage a former princess.. Poppaea wanted Marcus and connived against Lygia.. Amneris (princess) wants Radames and connived against Lygia...
Radames converts actually becomes traitor against the king. Marcus becomes christian a traitor against Nero.. I could go on & on. Verdi did it right in 1871 eighty years before this sorry epic.. Trivia here is that S.Loren once played Aida with some one else singing..Loren was stated as having poor breath control. She certainly had plenty of lung power...Leo Genn has been the consummate actor from day one. He could convey his role via the radio and be beliveable. I was shocked the veteran actor Felix Aylmer's poor performance. He usually radiates on the screen and very authoritative.
Robert Taylor especially in drama, crime, legal roles is an excellent actor. Here he definitely is a totem pole. Very poor dialogue given to him. With Genn,Aylmer,& Ustinov all classically trained utilizing believable dialogue of the time, Taylors seems reprehensible. Stating a herald was 'patched up'! He bought a slave! Taylor had plenty clout at the time, he should of insisted on better dialogue. Buddy Baer was more beleivable. Kerr brought little to the picture. Taylors wife Ursula Theiss would have been perfect for the role.
Of course The incomparable PETER USTINOV, always a joy gave a 'Tour de force' performance. He actually took singing lessons for this role. When the instructor Arrigo, (same one whom taught L. Pavarotti), asked how much time in months/years can you give me, Ustinov answered maybe two or three WEEKS, Arrigo said 'IMPOSSIBILE'.. Ustinov can actually sing well. You may not like nor ever viewed opera, if you even remotely enjoyed Quo Vadis I strongly suggest you view on dvd or laser disc AIDA especially Luciano Pavarotti version done later in his career when his voice slightly darkened, Not only the enjoyment of great singing you will enjoy the scenery the dual "death Scene" and watch as the scenery actual changes location. You see it change & then you do not.
Enjoy..
1st to Die (2003)
MORE 'MCGUFFIES' THAN HITCHCOCK
I almost turned it off in first few minutes thinking they revealed the ending and now tell the story. DO NOT TURN OFF THIS MOVIE. TRACEY POLLAN BETTER THAN STREEP. I WILL NOT SPOIL THIS MOVIE FOR IMDB Members. Suffice to say the genre although not new was produced, directed,& acted superlatively... Tracey the cop, Pam Grier the 'Quincy', the reporter & the A.D.A, ALL FEMALE FRIENDS start a sort of first wives club meets Agatha Christy,Jessica Fletcher,Ms. Marple meeting Mission Impossible (the original series w/"Paris") and hold their own. Sean young,Angie Everhardt, carry the intrinsic plot, or is it.... I could go on & on but I do not desire to spoil anyones enjoyment of WHODUNIT mystery movies. The entire three hours I was captivated and wide awake.. Brava Tracey.. This obviously was a feel good Female movie & I thoroughly enjoyed same. ENJOY
