Bat sin fan dim: Yan yuk cha siu bau (1993)
Morally dubious
As most reviewers, I too did not know what to expect from this Hong Kong cat. III movie. The first half of the film looked like any other horror/gore-exploitation flick but the second half proved to be most disturbing indeed. Brutal police violence is brought to us in a half-comical way. And just when the (Western?) viewers sympathy shifts to the side of the pscycopathic killer we get to see the flashback 'we have all been waiting for': the gruesome murder of the family. And with gruesome i mean the prolonged shots of children being murdered after witnessing their parents death.
it isn't morally dubious to tell this (true) story, but it is when it is done in this way: as blood and gore entertainment intercut with 'funny' moments.
Although this movie was able to disturb me, a thing a movie didn't do since (cliche) Henry: portrait of a serial killer.. I just dont know about this one...
Les diseurs de vérité (2000)
great movie
when this movie came out in holland it didn't receive too much attention, which was a little strange because the director (Traidia) was also the director of the critically acclaimed and much-liked 'de Poolse Bruid' (the polish bride) The reviews that did came out weren't too positive on this film they thought it was too short and too complex... I agree it was a little short but the story is well developed within the 70 (75?) minutes. The story is definitely a highly personal one and the film breathes this. It's subject is also a controversial one although maybe a bit unknown too americans.
all in all an intelligent, personal and sometimes funny film from a great director.. 3 1/2 out of 5
