Nurse Betty (2000)
A very bizarre movie.
This movie is very bizarre. It is sort of a so-called "black comedy" in the same way "King of Comedy" and "U-turn" were. The acting is excellent; the story is okay. There are several very violent scenes, particularly one horrifically violent scene near the beginning of the movie that kind of sickened me and ruined the mood of the rest of the movie for me, especially since I didn't expect it and thought the movie was going to be "light fluff." The movie made me smile at times, but it really never made me laugh. I heard some people in the audience make statements near the end of the movie such as, "This is stupid" and "Oh, come on." Children should not be brought to this movie, as a few nitwits did where I was. Besides the bloody violence and four-letter words, the movie depicts people and life as generally miserable; in fact, rather than cheering me up, which is why I went to see the movie in the first place, the movie actually left me feeling kind of depressed.
Loser (2000)
A surprisingly good movie! The title is misleading.
I went to see this movie because I was bored and had nothing to do this particular Saturday night and I had either seen everything else and/or wasn't interested in much of what was playing. I figured that this movie would be the usual asinine garbage that is made for today's college and teenage crowds, but I like Greg Kinnear and thought I'd give the movie a look. I expected some ridiculous, sniveling, moronic geek of a character whom everyone would pick on and he would go out of his way to kiss up to the members of the in-crowd only to be made to look even more foolish. This was not the case, at all. The character is played straight. The so-called "loser" in the movie is not played as I thought that he would be played; he was really a winner, which made this movie surprisingly pleasant and entertaining. The jerks in the "in crowd" were the true losers in this movie, as they usually are in real life. It is only in their eyes that people with values are "losers." The acting in this movie was excellent. All of the characters were portrayed in a believable manner. You either truly liked them or despised them, and you could really root for the good guy (the "loser"), not because you felt sorry for him but because he really deserved to win.
Me, Myself & Irene (2000)
Me, Myself & I think this movie stinks!
The Farrelly brothers have finally done it--they have managed to make a thoroughly boring and thoroughly disgusting movie. While Dumb & Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary were disgusting, they were hilariously disgusting. This movie is just plain unfunny disgusting. There seems to be a general fixation in this movie on the anus and the use of the anus as a bodily opening into which animate and inanimate objects are rammed. I didn't like the story. I didn't like the anal humor. I didn't like the characters (and, other than Jim Carrey, I don't know whether I even liked most of the actors who played the characters). I didn't like the narration (reminded me of The Big Lebowski, another truly bad movie). And I didn't like the soundtrack, except for maybe one song. I should have listened to Rita Sever of NBC's Friday Night who rated the movie "only if you're desperate [to see a movie]". She's usually right on the money with her reviews, but I like Jim Carrey and most of his movies, so I thought I'd check it out. All in all, this movie was a disappointing waste of time and $8.50. It wouldn't even be worth seeing for $1.95 at the local second-run movie house.
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)
Great Movie! Great script, great acting, great story.
This was a great movie. The movie is has a number of twists and turns, some of which were unlikely but not impossible or unbelievable. The cast was believable and the acting superb. The movie, while probably not a thriller per se (there was nothing to make the viewer gasp or jump out of his seat), was suspenseful and, even though a visit to the restroom was desperately needed, this viewer was glued to his seat. I give this movie 8 out of 10 stars.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman (1974)
An Outstanding and Moving History Lesson!
I saw this movie when it first aired back in 1974, at age 13. Having grown up in an all white, Chicago suburb, all I knew about American's of African descent came from my history classes in grade school, classes which taught me that, many years ago, these peoples' forebears were slaves in America, that Lincoln had set them free, and that now they are free and equal. So I always wondered why they constantly seemed to be protesting, rioting, and committing crimes, as reported daily on the news? What do they have to so angry about now?
This movie really opened my eyes for the first time and gave me a clue as to why these Americans were, and often still are, very angry. I never knew that any of the deplorable treatment of these Americans had gone on after slavery ended, and I was even more horrified to learn that this kind of treatment had continued into my lifetime, which began in 1961, and beyond.
Such treatment as white's having a water fountain from which to drink, while black's were only provided with a pipe sticking out of the ground, if even that; the forcing of black women to give up their seats on buses to white men; black's not being allowed in white diners, white hotels, etc.; all of this was going on in America during my short lifetime, and I never knew it.
The only thing that I ever cared about was that the Vietnam War would end before I was eighteen, so the protests against the war I could understand. Black protests for equal rights I couldn't understand, because as I stated, I thought they had equal rights.
Well, this movie made me understand for the first time reality of equality did not exist in America. Since first seeing this movie, I have always felt that this movie should be mandatory viewing in every grade school history class in America.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
ITHIS MOVIE STINKS! IT ISN'T A THRILLER, IT ISN'T SUSPENSEFUL, IT'S JUST PLAIN BORING!
I sat through over an hour and a half of this garbage and never understood what the point of this movie was--I couldn't wait for it to end, just so that I could leave with the knowledge that I had used my reduced price ticket, which was to expire 09-30-99.
The story/plot was lousy. The script/dialogue was lousy. And, most disappointingly of all, the acting was lousy! The kid, though cute, was unnatural in every respect; the dialogue that the writers had this kid saying was not the dialogue of a kid. And Bruce Willis had some kind of strange smirk on his face throughout the movie, certainly not the look of a devoted mental health care provider.
I don't know what the point of this movie was, at all! The story/plot, if there even was one, totally escaped me. There was nothing suspenseful or thrilling about this movie; in fact, I felt like going to sleep throughout the movie. I was actually relieved when the movie was finally over so that I could leave with the knowledge that I could honestly report, with all due honesty, that I had seen this movie and that it had "SUCKED!"
There isn't even anything to "spoil" about this movie--it is a total "zero." If IMDb allowed for a "0" rating, this movie would get it. I just hope that reporting that there is nothing to "spoil" is not considered by IMDb as a "spoiler." I hate people who reveal the plots of movies to me, but I swear to God, I don't know what the plot of this movie is.
Since becoming a IMDb member a few weeks ago, I have voted on many movies. Before opening a file on a movie that I have seen, I decide what my vote is for a movie that I have seen. 99.9% of the time, my vote is "right on" with my fellow IMDb members. This movie is one of the few, and rare, exceptions in which my vote differs drastically with my fellow IMDb members. As of this writing (10-02-99), the average vote of my fellow IMDb members for this movie is a weighted average of 8.8. I cannot understand this score, at all.
If you agree, or disagree, with my opinion of this movie, please feel free to tell me what you think--I could be wrong. If you can convince me, I may re-watch this film on video. As for now, I will discourage anybody who is thinking of paying $8 or more to see this crap, first run, from wasting his or her money.
Sling Blade (1996)
Excellent movie! Should have been Best Picture!
This movie was thoroughly interesting and engaging from start to finish. The acting was superb on everyone's part. Billy Bob Thornton was so believable that I forgot I was watching an actor in a movie. His portrayal should have won him the Oscar for which he was nominated. In fact, it is my opinion that this movie should have been nominated and should have won Best Picture.
Rushmore (1998)
Bor-r-ring! Unfunny! Waste of Time! Total Disappointment!
I looked forward to seeing this movie. I talked others into seeing it. We each viewed it, on tape, at different times. We each HATED it! It was boring, unfunny, and pointless. It was 90 minutes or so of my life that was wasted. Having heard how "great" that it supposedly was, I sat through the entire thing with the thought that it must get better. It didn't. In fact, it only got worse.
That Thing You Do! (1996)
A Perfectly Charming Movie! It Makes You Smile and Feel Good!
I was born in 1961. My earliest memories go back to late 1963. This movie brought back memories that I wish I could relive. Before the world went to hell in the late sixties, the world and life seemed as sweet as it was portrayed in this movie. Roger Ebert, in his review of this movie, said, that, if this movie does anything, it makes you smile. He was right. I found myself sitting through this movie with a smile on my face and with a feeling of contentment. I sometimes wondered whether I had "glorified" my memories of those years, but this movie confirmed that I was right. Those were some of the best years that this country ever experienced.
Charley's Aunt (1941)
Hilarious! Jack Benny does his greatest movie work in this film!
I saw this movie about 25 years ago and have never seen it since. I've asked around about it for years, and nobody knows anything about it. Video stores don't carry it, and, of course, the young people who work in these stores have never heard ot it. It stars Jack Benny in what, I believe, is his greatest and funniest movie role. It has stood out in my mind for all these years as a truly hilarious movie, and, when I ran across it in IMDb, I wanted to be sure to add my favorable opinion to the list of comments.
