Babel (2006)
2 hours and 142 minutes later...
I was looking at the blue numbers on my DVD player. I turned to my wife and asked : "Is this film going to end soon?" "I think so," she said, "Why?" "Because the counter indicates 211 minutes!" I replied.
"Those aren't minutes," she paused, "That's 2 hours and 11 minutes!" "Oh," I said. "It seems like 211 minutes".
The film's length is actually 142 minutes. But it really felt like 4 hours. Does it really take 142 minutes to explain lack of communication between different peoples, races or countries ? If this film had said the same thing in under a half-hour, it would have gotten an Oscar for Best Short Film, I'm sure.
The music is excellent, I might say. Acting is average. I've seen better.
Betty Fisher et autres histoires (2001)
Four ways to love your child
I've just seen this film at the Montreal World Film Festival. The plot is very interesting. A deranged mother and her lack of love for her daughter, the daughter and her absolute love for her son, another mother and her distant love for her own son, and a mother's love for an adopted son. Once Betty loses her child, her deranged mother kidnaps a little boy, telling her daughter that she is keeping the boy for friends who are on vacation. We seem to think that we now know the ending. False. The plot thickens and the film ends as it should : nice, smart, a bit violent but also very funny. A very entertaining film. Luck Mervil is new to acting and did a great job.
The Insider (1999)
Slow and no action : boring.
Slow, no action, below par performance by the big names, too long for the plot to come alive and when it is its already dead. Sorry, I usually do not comment negatively on films but I feel that this time I was had by the critics who have seen this film, it seems, under the influence of something other than tobacco. If you want to see a really great film on this same subject, which is also slow, with no action, but with an absolute mastering in acting and direction, I suggest Smoke.
Ma petite entreprise (1999)
Cast, sets and music : excellent
Slow at first then the plot livens up. The cast is excellent. Very funny. Beautifully directed. No apparent special effects to distract you from the plot. The underlying message is clear and plausible. It even makes you wonder... I enjoyed every character, all location sets and the music from Alain Bashung.
