Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Eternal Movie of the Sloppy Editor
Come on people, this is NOT THAT GOOD A MOVIE!! Is it clever, yes. Unique, sure. Whimsical, OK. But how about poorly directed, badly cast, horribly acted, and edited by an ADD sufferer.
The storyline and cinematic treatment are engaging -- for the first 20 minutes. But this film, like Kaufman's predecessors Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, suffers from the cardinal sin of BEING TOO IMPRESSED WITH ITSELF. This is more a movie about making a super-clever concept movie than it is about an actual story and actual characters that you can really care about. By hitting the viewer over the head with the gimmickry, it becomes insulting, tiring and just not interesting anymore.
For a far better thought-provoking concept film, try Carrey's Truman Show.
Northfork (2003)
A piece of TRASH
Words cannot describe how BAD this movie is. I love independent and art movies. I even liked Twin Falls, Idaho (a little). I went to see this movie on the strength of a Roger Ebert glowing 4-star review (I usually agree with him). I will never trust his judgment again.
The premise, the plot, the acting, the dialog....one worse than the next.
Best line: "We're all in the same boat." That's how I felt in the theater with the rest of the audience.
Meet Joe Black (1998)
Painfully slow and boring
Three hours of drivel! I liked the concept...was willing to suspend disbelief long enough to accept Brad Pitt as Death (in a suit instead of a cloak...), but the "love" story and the boardroom "drama", give me a break. I was hoping the titles would roll about an hour and a half before they actually did.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
A truly terrible, boring movie!
It's been a long time since I've seen a movie this unbelievable or unbelievably BAD. The plot is a mess, the acting atrocious, and the dialogue verges on comic. (In fact, this movie would play better as a comedy than the drama it pretends to be.) I cannot imagine what Stanley Kubrick was thinking (or Cruise and Kidman, for that matter).
If you are tempted to see this because you're a Kubrick fan, rent A Clockwork Orange again instead. If you're looking for a provocative film about marital infidelity, check out One Night Stand (1997) instead. If you just want to see some skin, your adult video store will have many options with much better dialogue than Eyes Wide Shut.
