Ronin (1998)
Better each time I see it
The first time I saw this film, it seemed just ordinary, but each time I see it again, I like it more than the time before. It's entertaining, engaging, and fun. De Niro and Reno's characters hint at tremendous experience in state spook agencies, and the others are no slouches except for that English guy. I liked the intrigue more than the chases and gunplay but that's just me. Overall a great movie. I've bought it twice and seen it probably a few dozen times by now.
Betting on Zero (2016)
Interesting throughout
A long but engaging and extremely even-handed documentary, and it's engaging in large part because it doesn't take obvious sides. You really don't know which way things will go, nor is anyone portrayed as a purely good guy or bad guy, and different parties are given equal opportunities to speak. I liked it.
The Matrix (1999)
99% SFX
Superlative special effects, non-stop action, but no real plot, a total disregard for scientific realities, and lots of simplistic "philosophy." Great eye candy and no substance combine to give an average film overall. A good movie to see when you just want to be entertained, without having to think too deeply.
The Hunt for Red October (1990)
Good pace and action
A constant pace and good (but not very violent) action makes this film very entertaining. I usually don't like military or pseudo-military films, but this is an exception. A good cast, with the inimitable Sean Connery leading, and a highly believable plot kept me interested throughout.
The Intruder (1962)
Unexpectedly excellent
One tends to associate Roger Corman with low-budget (but profitable) horror films, and so I expected this film to be in that genre, but in fact it is a horror film of a very different kind (without monsters, or at least without non-human monsters), and even though it was clearly not a big-budget blockbuster, it is interesting and excellent overall. With a solid cast and a intriguing plot with a clear message (but not necessarily the message that you might guess at first), this film held my attention from start to finish. Good entertainment, and proof that you don't need $100 million to make a fine film.
Bowfinger (1999)
Great comedy entertainment
I expected this to be at least a good comedy, given the cast and screenplay, but it was actually much better than good. Very entertaining, good pace and direction, constant humor and many major laughs, and even a significant message behind the humor. Murphy and Martin are both excellent, and many of their scenes had me laughing out loud (which is rare for me). Good for the whole family.
