Sin noticias de Dios (2001)
This movie is finally released on DVD and video in USA. Well worth the wait.
Basically creates its own mythology as to the afterlife and how the angels and devils communicate and coexist. Gael, Fanny, Demian, Victoria, Penelope, and Gemma Jones were all great. As others have commented, the use of languages (at least 4) was creative. I also enjoyed the heaven and hell sets.
(SPOILERS)
I kept thinking, they are making the Penelope Cruz character a lesbian -- interesting --- and then it turns out she is a straight man, and Javier Bardem to boot! She did a great job in this movie.
I would have liked to see at least some of the "legal" arguments before the judge as to Manny's fate, but that is my own negative comment, and not much of one.
Carmen: A Hip Hopera (2001)
good for what it is
I enjoyed this, although it was too short to cover the story well enough. I thought Beyonce & Mekhi were both great, and Mos played a good villain. As long as you don't expect a true remake of the opera, you should enjoy it.
Flawless (1999)
great acting; terrible editing
while the two lead actors were both great in their roles, this movie needed a serious editor. Some scenes of the drag faction arguing with gay republicans had nothing to do with the story, and the scenes jumped from scene to scene often for no reason. For instance, when DeNiro first is unconscious in the hospital, he recovers and walks out (which presumably was at least a few days after the stroke), yet the next scenes show the villians trashed an apartment where a murder had occurred -- a site that obviously would have been off limits as a crime scene.
You can enjoy the acting of the 2 leads in this movie, but the plot is a mess, and definitely brings the overall rating for this movie

Pirates of Silicon Valley (1999)
could have been great as a miniseries
The story jumps way too much and ultimately becomes unsatisfying as a 2 hour TV movie. It should have been four to six hours. Noah Wyle and Anthony Michael Hall are very good and convincing as the leads, but I just had too many questions at the end. I gave this a seven because I liked the acting and the idea of trying to tell this story. As one character pointed out, the industry being discussed in this story has created more wealth than any other type of industry in the history of mankind. There should be more stories about it.
Future Kick (1991)
too violent
decent sets and good choreography of kick boxing scenes. but movie is absolutely ruined by graphic violent murders
Innocent Blood (1992)
Loggia rules in this one
Loggia is quite the surprise here. The storyline takes the vampire myth in different directions. The short time that Don Rickles is on screen as a vampire is worth the price of the rental alone.
Favorite Son (1988)
great script
Unbelievably good script. Really shocking and unexpected in parts, especially the double-crosses. Linda Koslowski was excellent and so different from her Crocodile Dundee days, and Loggia is also very good. A relative of Manchurian Candidate.
Armageddon (1998)
stale formula
Predictable and formulatic. Must have been written by a team of writers. Liv Tyler's performance was completely unbelievable. It is her character on Earth that the viewer should relate to in order to have any suspense or to care at all about the characters in space. However she was so terrible one did not care for anyone in the story. Steve Buscemi was given the worst lines imaginable. What a waste.
