The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
It's 'Lord of the Rings' come to life.
I read this story to my kids. It was about, I don't Know, twenty five years ago. The 'kids' are young adults now, one with a child of her own. The other night, The 'Kids' took Mom and Pop to the movies to see what damage the Film Makers had done to Tolkiens beautifully written words. Well we sat there absolutely enthralled. The much repeated whisper that passed up and down our little section of seats was "Incredible, it's just the way I always pictured him(Each character) or it(The Shire) or them(Orks, elves, Hobbits, wraiths). Tolkiens ability to build images in the readers mind is exceptional. That each reader saw the same image as the others is astounding.
If you've read any of the trilogy, I promise that (unlike Dune) you will not be disappointed with this film. If you have not read Tolkien Then you'll just have to be satisfied with some incredible special FX and action scenes on a scale that you've not seen before. The computer generated stuff is seemless and the pace heart racing. I'm a fan of action/adventure and fantasy when it's done well and this film was done very well.
Message in a Bottle (1999)
Definitly a women's film, however...
Si-Fi action adventure thats my kind of film. This one is definitely a women's film, a love story that I only ran to mollify my wife. However, this wasn't a boy meets girl story. It was Man meets Women, a real man, a guy you'd like and convincingly played with more ability then I thought Kosner had. And the women, not the paper cut-out girl from The Prince's Bride but an adult women with some depth character play by a Robin Wright. Consider, if this film touched me, a Si-Fi nut, what will it do to you?

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Great Si-Fi
This film is a special affects stand-out but then we expected that. The film had powerful characters, a decent story line and a talented director. What it lacked, in unavoidable comparison to the first film, was the lively interplay between the characters. There didn't seem to be much of an emotional link among any of them. Was it a flaw of the script? an error in direction? In the first film(unavoidable) even the robots connected. Still, it was great Si-Fi

The Lion in Winter (1968)
Don't blink your ears or you'll miss something in this one.
This fast paced Comedy/Drama will keep you glued to the screen and who better to deliver the incredibly rapid verbal slashes thrusts and perrys then O'toole and Hepburn.
Of Mice and Men (1939)
Casting, cinematography, direction, this film has it all.
Casting directors rarely get any real credit for what they do but I think, for this film, we must make an exception. The actors, in Of Mice And Men, play thier parts as if they were born into them. Add to this cinematography that is both artistically and technically outstanding and you have a film that truly deserves the term Classic. I believe that this film is a must-see for anyone considering a career as a writer, actor, director or any other area of film making.
