Searching (2018)
Finally accurate use of computers in film
Everything is seen through people interacting with computers and smartphones - extremely realistically. No made up interfaces, everything is a real OS and all the social networks used are real as well. The movie cleverly keeps the websites and services used historically correct, so that when in the movie someone accesses YouTube several years ago, it really looks like it did back then.
Through this vehicle the movie tells a thrilling story, even showing outside scenes through livestreaming webcams.
Had me hooked from the start, never having a dull moment and only getting more intense as the movie goes on. Keeps you guessing, and ends with a proper satisfying closure to the story.
Next Gen (2018)
Stunning battles, uninspired story
Some of the battles are very satisfying, with huge bots battling it out in cities, at some points jumping so high that you can see the curvature of the earth. Overall just excellent visual work.
But the story is extremely uninspired. Oddly, the creators at one point even poke fun at a story which would be an adventurous bonding journey between the girl and a robot, yet then go ahead and do just that anyway. The sequences of the robot pleading his deep emotions to the girl cross over to being irritating.
Infinity Chamber (2016)
Has its moments
One of those movies that overall wasn't that amazing as a whole, but is vindicated thanks to some satisfying moments. Experienced frisson twice, and at another point was so immersed I forgot to think about anything except this movie. These made it a worthwhile evening entertainment.
Has a memorable reoccurring visual that I probably won't be forgetting soon.
Bølgen (2015)
If you love disaster movies, you'll totally dig this.
This film is a great achievement, the effects and acting are stellar. Despite being a Scandinavian film, it is on par with a Hollywood disaster movie. However that is also the problem.
There was an opportunity here to let you get comfortable with the patterns of Hollywood disaster movies, then take advantage of not being bound by those rules by completely subverting the viewer's expectations in the final moments. Sadly, this opportunity is missed.
Dark Matter: Pilot - Part 1 (2015)
Hit or miss? Difficult to say based on the first episode.
I have not seen any other episodes of this series yet, so I figured before I turn into a fan or a hater, I'd simply give my first impressions on this episode.
The basic premise is that this is a ship in space, with the entire crew in deep sleep, awakening one by one only to discover that each has lost their memories. Not a terribly original premise, but it's a favorite as it instantly allows you to identify with the characters, as you also don't know their backgrounds and discovering what they are is a goal you share in common with the crew.
But it soon gets painful as the characters seem to be very one-dimensional and caricatured. This girl is smart. This guy is aggressive. This Asian guy is good with knives. And so on. You feel a bit cringy throughout the middle of the first episode, as everyone tries to come off as cool, only to actually come off as a bunch of little boys desperately trying to act cool.
But I'm willing to forgive this. Even Star Trek TNG started off pretty weak, as the actors themselves obviously hadn't gotten used to their roles yet. There is enough plot development throughout the episode to keep your interest, although I was very close to giving up on the series several times.
In the end there is a plot twist (how twisty it is depending on your expectations, I think some might have seen it coming) and a cliffhanger that actually works, keeping you interested enough to want to see how things turn out in the next episode.
Whether this will be a great series or just a continuation of cringy painful one-dimensional characters remains to be seen.
Dead Presidents (1995)
Nice action
When I rented this film, I expected it to be a film about a carefully plotted robbery. And that it was. I was however somewhat surprised about the splatter side to all of that. I mean there is quite some gore in this movie!
Anyhow, to the plot. While I won't give anything away, let me say it was a bit linear. The most surprising thing about it was that there were no surprises. As the credits rolled I was left thinking how the script ever saw the green light.
The film isn't all bad however - the action sequences were bloody but also very nice and well thought out. If you like violent action scenes you might just enjoy this flick.
Contact (1997)
Great film for all us skeptics
Contact is a film about skepticism and faith. The movie shows how a subjective experience can be a fact for the one who experienced it, and how only you can decide what you believe in. This is also a well made science fiction film that I would have enjoyed even if religion wasn't my thing.
Had someone pressed stop in the middle of the film I would have been very upset. The film has a great immersion factor. At times it was beautiful, at times moving and sometimes even funny.
