Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
2.5h well spent.
Well, the script is barely above average, acting OK and the special effects are very well made. The person who did the casting though has to get some extra credit. Bloom and Depp complements each other perfectly, giving this movie the little extra that actually makes it something to watch out for. Sometimes quite funny, but I suspect that they will not pass the test of time, and a second watching of the movie might not be quite as enjoyable. The action scenes are of good quality, about what you'd expect from a modern movie after watching the remake of Zorro starring Bandeiras/Hopkins. Don't go to this movie and expect to see something new though, the parts have all been done before, and most of the time better than what you'd get here. The combination is new though, and as the genre of swashbuckling isn't very common in modern movies you will find some fresh elements still in this movie so I'd say that if you enjoyed the aforementioned Zorro (which I rated 9/10), you'll find this a pleasant experience. My vote on Pirates of the Caribbean: 7/10
100 Years of Horror (1996)
Trailers all the way.
Just saw the DVD, which only contains the two general episodes of this series and enjoyed it immensely. And since I'm a HUGE Abbott&Costello fan I was pleasantly surprised to see some outtakes from 'Abbott&Costello meets Frankenstein', one of their best films for sure.
But aside from that, Lee guides us through the history of horror movies using the trailers of the movies themselves. Not bad, all the exciting shots are there, but also the the very misplaced music and captions that accompanies the trailers. Silencing the music and removing the captions would have earned this otherwise wellmade documentary a 8/10, but now I think a 7 will be quite enough.
Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy (1955)
Not their best...
... but an OK film. The laughs are few, but most are worth the wait. To see Lou eat a hamburger is priceless. Film is mostly for diehard A&C fans but anyone who enjoys classic comedy might find it interesting. For a scarier, funnier movie I recommend A&C meet Frankenstein instead.
Roger & Me (1989)
Comedy, no way.
This must be the most boring film I ever saw. The only positive I can say about it is that thankfully I didn't pay to see it. We were given a free showing in school and everyone in the audience just sat there embarrassed wondering when the fun would start. This piece of junk is a badly filmed, way too long film. The actual idea on why making the movie took about 10 seconds to present. The only ones who can be interested in this film are those who lost their jobs and want to know why. They might find some of the interviews interesting. A different edit might have made an interesting documentary of this, but I doubt it, the interviews shown were not engaging in any way. As it is, it is just a tragedy, both to behold and to be a part of. AVOID THIS FILM AT ANY COST!
