Ralph Lee, BBC Studios Productions’ CEO, will be leaving the BBC’s commercial arm in April after almost six years to pursue a new challenge outside the organization.

Every time I see Dick Van Dyke’s name in a headline lately, I fear the worst. But this week it meant a joyous celebration. In CBS’ new two-hour special “Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic,” the legendary actor — who throughout his career has won multiple Emmys, a Tony and a Grammy Award — was honored on his 98th birthday for his many contributions to the arts.
The tribute, which is now streaming on Paramount+, features special performances by Jason Alexander, Rufus Wainwright, Weird Al Yankovic, Rita Ora and Amber Riley, among others. Meanwhile, the guest list is just as long and just as impressive as Van Dyke’s career. Dame Julie Andrews, Mel Brooks, Rob Reiner, Carol Burnett, Ted Danson, Stanley Tucci and Lin-Manuel Miranda are just a few of the celebs who appear during the star-studded event. And to top it all off, there’s a holiday number too.

The eight-episode series explores oceans, deserts, grasslands, coasts, and more, where nature itself provides the type of soundtrack people listen to while drifting off to sleep. But it also explores humans while delving into the conservation champions fighting to save the planet while we still can — and there’s music for that, too. Kate Ward joined BBC Studios, the corporation’s commercial arm, last year to oversee its factual portfolio. Ward moved over from Vice Studios, where she was global president, and has jumped into the challenge of stewarding one of the world’s most powerful factual brands, which includes 66-year-old leader in the space the BBC’s Natural History Unit (Nhu).
Ahead of Ward’s trip to Mipcom, she sat down with Variety to discuss the changes she’s implemented over the past year and what she’s looking forward to spotlighting in Cannes.
How would you describe your remit as head of BBC Studios’ factual portfolio?
I’m in the really, really lucky position that BBC Studios Factual is one of the pillars of our production business. We are working across an incredible range from natural history, specialist factual, docs, popular factual and formats, so we’re really reaching across the whole of that factual genre.
