Only one episode of it? We want more, please!

In only 18 minutes, "Sonnies's Edge" give more fun, beautifull graphics, gore science fiction and surprises than a lot of movies. Just watch it

Turning the cliche on its head
GreyHunter4 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm surprised more people aren't discussing the subtext of the "twist" ending. Movies and TV have inundated us with the classic trope of a raped woman rising up again to be strong and take revenge on those who have wronged her. But the twist here actually goes in an entirely different direction. Since she was clearly so badly damaged physically that they transferred her consciousness to the beast, what she is doing isn't a chance at revenge for the assault -- she's not (as far as we know) attacking any beast controlled by one of her rapists. Rather, and it makes a somewhat beautiful sense when you think about the revelations in this episode, she's getting chances to symbolically survive the rape itself, to win the battle that she lost back when she was just human. The twist isn't just that her consciousness is housed in the beast and therefore she has the self-preservation edge, but that she has a *chance* at self-preservation, a chance to do what she failed to do in the attack by her rapists.

I think it's too powerful a metaphor to just blow off by claiming the twist was pedestrian or predictable

PLEASE give Sonnie's Edge it's own series!!
nickxnothing17 March 2019
PLEASE make this into a series. The entire build-up to the fight, the science behind the beast fights, the cool design and look of the beasts themselves, and the whole story. The visual effects, and the sci-fi gore of the fights is incredible. I was deeply disappointed this whole season/series didn't evolve around this one short episode. Can only hope for more in the future.

Wow, quite impressed
sarcasm8317 March 2019
I actually have to give this a 10, as there was no way I could be surprised by something that fits into 17 minutes like I was.

The premise immediately interested me, while the character design positively reminded me of a few games, Borderlands (Sonny) and Dishonored (Dicko)..

The animation quality was quite excellent, with only a few facial expression hick-ups that could've been improved, but that's a major nitpick to be honest. The choreography of the fight was great and more surprising than some big film choreographies. On top of that, I absolutely loved how this absolutely did not shy away from gore and other adult themes and simply did what it wanted to. So refreshing to see in the world of growing censorships, outrages and artists being constantly apologetic to crowds who just want to control others.

All of that combined with a genuinely surprising ending that I don't think I could've guessed and it was a VERY entertaining 17 minute short film.

Like user "nickxnothing" wrote in his review; This would make for a fantastic series of it's own and would definitely watch it.

Awesome piece of art

One of the best scifi-shorts i've seen in a long time. The animation is beautiful, the beastie fight is jaw-dropping, the story compelling and the music/voices are done very well. A lot of people are hungry for more and i'm one of em.

None of the characters are compelling and the overall story is pretty weak, but the animation is unbelievably gorgeous! Plus that "beastie" fight was incredibly done.

Incredible Eyecandy Paired With a Meh Story
jeramygitzel18 March 2019
Right off the bat, this show feels like it's trying too hard. It has very beautiful animation, but the story is just so damn cliche. Even with their own little spin on the protagonist, the story felt like something I have heard and seen a thousand times already. It feels really forced and edgy which leaves the whole thing feeling too unrealistic, contrasting the lifelike animation. Now, one thing that this show did extremely well is symbolism. There is one scene in particular that was so obvious but still worked very well, and it was even given more meaning later on in the story. The big twist was pretty predictable, like a halfhearted Black Mirror twist. Overall, might watch more for the good animation if I have time, otherwise not going to watch more.

Fantastic Beasts And Where To Fight Them
southdavid2 April 2019
I've decided to review each of the short films that make up this series individually.

The opening episode takes place in a futuristic world, where humans upload their consciousness to large beasts and fight to the death for the entertainment of a baying crowd. Sonnie (voiced by Helen Sadler) has overcome her traumatic past to become a fighter on the rise. Making her debut for the villainous Dicko (Time Winters) he offers her a fortune to throw the fight.

Visually Sonnie's Edge is a very accomplished piece of work, it has a realistic art style and there's some real weight to the battle between the creatures that makes up the middle third of the episode. However, the story and tone does feel pretty childish, the swearing juvenile, the violence gratuitous and the lesbian sex scene bordering on comedy for its lack of subtlety.

I didn't hate it, it's just a dated story and I don't really see much scope for a wider tale beyond this version.

I just don't get it
alexanderbogdanovbog11 June 2021
What is the appeal of the first episode?

Is it violence? Or eroticism?

Graphics are amazing, yeah.

But storywise...

Ugh, I dunno.

Seemed awful.

Guess, need to watch another couple of episodes.

A very well made, animated characters and story telling. From the very first minute to the last. This episode is a wonderful beginning to the series and I hope the rest of the episodes don't let me down. The bar is high. Approx. 17 minutes duration.

Apart from all the amazing visuals and story telling, the soundtrack was a huge plus for me as well, it's a great addition to the cyber punk vibe of this episode

A tale of two halves.
Pjtaylor-96-1380443 January 2020
'Sonnie's Edge (2019)' is very much a short of two halves. The first, focusing around a Pokémon-esque monster battle, is visually spectacular and almost as entertaining. The second is seemingly only included so that the piece can end with a narrative twist, which feels unearned and unnecessary. I suppose its ending would be satisfying if the overall thing wasn't so baggy. It would also help if the dialogue was any good. When it comes down to it, the aforementioned monster battle - which is exciting, tense and visceral - elevates the overall experience. It's just a shame that it isn't its sole focus. 6/10

Warning: Spoilers
This was a great start to the series. The visuals were just spectacular, really really amazing to look at. The creatures themselves were so well designed. The accents were a bit annoying because really, not everyone in London speaks like that lmao. In fact, barely anyone does, and I could tell some of them were just Americans doing not very good accents. The story itself was nothing special but the twist ending was unexpected at least. This could definitely be a feature length or even a miniseries. This episode definitely got the ball rolling well

What a 13 year old thinks sci-fi should be
Hektor_II23 March 2019
From the bland, two-dimensional characters to the rehashed story(now with modern stereotypes), to a dialogue which could be coming straight out of an early 2000 video game, this short-movie has nothing of value to say. Sci-fi should be asking interesting rhetorical questions, should question our mind and show us something new. In 17 minutes there was no sign of this or a single creative thought in the whole writing process.

Just one example: Why does her friend tell the obviously evil and unsympathetic villain the protagonists private and sensitive backstory minutes after meeting him? This is just the laziest use of exposition imaginable.

The only thing positive about this episode are the visuals, which are nice to look at, but not to a degree that it makes the story any less boring.

This is advertised as sci-fi, but what you get is poor storytelling, flat, extremely edgy characters, a shoe-horned sex-scene and a future world in which people are ecstatic about gore, oh and men are evil.
