The directors of the new Mean Girls musical movie are using the powers of a bus for good.
Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne are launching the Yes Bus Acting Camp for underserved youth in Los Angeles, with the goal of equipping them with some training to strengthen their confidence to enter the entertainment industry.
“Like Janis says in the opening of our movie, ‘It’s not easy making a movie,’ but we also know that it’s not easy getting the confidence to just go for it as an actor, either,” Jayne said in a statement. Added Perez in a statement, “Not everyone in L.A. has the same opportunities, so we just want to help level the playing field a little bit.”
The free two-week program will take place on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. this summer in downtown L.A. Acting and writing seminars will...

It’s a badge of honor for a movie to be made into a stage musical. It’s an even bigger badge of honor for that musical to be adapted back into a movie of its own. But here we are – 20 years after Mean Girls hit theaters and six years after the show hit Broadway, Mean Girls the musical is now a movie.
Mean Girls is about a teenager named Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) who, until now, has been homeschooled by her mother while Mom does research in Africa. Cady finally gets a chance to attend a regular high school, and it goes about as well as one would expect. To put it plainly, Cady is socially awkward.

For Mean Girls, the movie musical remake of the beloved 2004 comedy, director Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne went back to high school. Literally.
The film was shot on location at a shuttered all girl Catholic school in New Jersey. In lieu of trailers, talent — which includes Rene Rapp, Angourie Rice, Tina Fey, Auli’i Cravalho, and Jaquel Spivey — would partition off classrooms, while production offices were in homeroom, and the Covid compliance team posted up the old nurse’s office.
“We tried to make it feel like a camp,” Perez tells The Hollywood Reporter of the set-up. “Especially, with so much pressure that they were putting on themselves from the cultural zietgiest. We wanted to keep it safe and happy and just positive.”
Any pressure stems from the realities of re-imagining the beloved comedy written by Fey that, among certain demographics, barreled towards cult classic status in record time with instantly recognizable one-liners.

You might be familiar with Mean Girls on Broadway, most recently toplined by Sabrina Carpenter and Reneé Rapp, and you’ve almost definitely seen the 2004 movie, packed with more quotable moments than one can count. So, in the new movie musical Mean Girls, directors Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. had big shoes to fill.
To prepare for the Tina Fey-scripted, Lorne Michaels-produced film, the married directing duo headed to a high school in Ottawa, Canada, and learned from the pros: Gen Z theater kids. They soaked up...

You don’t get to plan when you’ll get a life-changing email.
For “Mean Girls” directors Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne, the missive that would ultimately lead to their feature directorial debut came at a particularly tough time for them. Following their well-received, Sundance-premiering short-form TV series “Quarter Life Poetry,” the married couple were deep into developing another TV show, this one about office culture.
“And then the pandemic happened, and offices ceased to exist,” Jayne explained to IndieWire over Zoom. “We were not doing so great. We’re like, ‘What is life right now?’ ‘What’s next?’ And then all of a sudden, this dream email came through with the words ‘Mean Girls’ on it. I got an IV infusion of vitamins and minerals and life!”
Over multiple chats, the duo came to learn Tina Fey was a fan of “Quarter Life Poetry” and wanted to hear...

Mark Waters’ hit comedy about the savage jungle of high school cliques, Mean Girls, had enough instant-classic dialogue and memorable characters to become a touchstone for the generation either in or fresh out of their teens when it was released in 2004 and those who have discovered it in the years since. With screenwriter Tina Fey continuing to steer the vehicle, the property navigated the transition to Broadway musical in 2018 with plenty of its original charms intact and some even fortified thanks to the expressive magic of characters bursting into songs that reveal their inner lives.
The show was never going to keep Stephen Sondheim awake nights with its workmanlike tunes composed by Fey’s husband, Jeff Richmond. But Nell Benjamin’s frequently clever lyrics delivered laughs and director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s flair for kinetic showmanship made it a high-energy explosion of hormonal insecurity, malice, vulnerability and hard-won life lessons. A top-notch cast didn’t hurt,...

Fxx describes its new series “Cake” as a “comedy showcase.” It’s an apt description, especially because trying to sum up the show in any more than two words is a much harder task than you might expect.
To follow the food metaphor the show’s title invites, “Cake” is the product of a number of ingredients all working together to produce a distinct flavor. To torture that metaphor further, “Cake” is something closer to a sugary casserole, an energetic mixture of disparate comedic styles that aren’t so much whipped up into batter but presented with large chunks still intact in each bite. In an entertainment world that’s increasingly supported by algorithms, “Cake” doesn’t allow viewers to get silo’ed into one headspace – and that’s the glory of the show.

When the work is stacking up, the meetings feel endless, and no one is listening to you anyway, sometimes the only way to survive the day is to take a beat — or, if you’re Samantha Jayne, make a beat and turn it into a catchy, smart, and ultimately empowering music video, “Circle Back.”
In her latest “Quarter Life Poetry” short film, Jayne walks women through an average workday, tackling each exhausting and infuriating challenge that pops up with the same sage advice: hit pause and circle back later. The short — dedicated to “the ladies on the 9 to 5 grind” — will debut Wednesday night as part of Fxx’s new short anthology series, “Cake.” Two of Jayne’s videos have already aired as part of the show, “Damn, I Love This Friday Night” and “Think of Nothing,” while more will be included in future episodes.
