Death Benefits Parts 1-3
Directed by Alan Bell who directed most of the episodes of Last of the Summer Wine. Although Taggart has some gruesome episodes, there is a bit of nudity and some salty language in this one.
Death Benefits features policeman's wives who moonlight as part time strippers. One of them Julia Fraser is found dead. Her husband was on duty that night but left an art museum to get home.
A number of people are meeting accidental deaths, the same names can be found in a book that Julia Fraser had. Maybe there is a link.
It is a wide ranging story. Mysterious accidental deaths, a sinister club owner, a robber staking out an art museum, a volatile policeman.
Then there is an old friend of Taggart who has come up north to help with an investigation. Bob McKendrick now has an abrasive relationship with Taggart.
The name of the story Death Benefits implies a link with insurance policies. Back in the early 90s, life endowment policies were still a popular investment vehicle, usually linked with mortgages. Nowadays they are virtually unheard of so you cannot get such a story.
A good story with many red herrings but it eventually becomes clear who might be behind the murders and there is an explanation as to why Julia Fraser died.
