Since she was appointed executive producer of “American Experience” in July 2020, Cameo George has been busy expanding and diversifying the slate of PBS’ signature historical documentary series, with the upcoming 34th season the first produced in full under her direction.
The new “American Experience” season will kick off on Feb. 7 with Michael Bicks and Anna Lee Strachan’s “Riveted: The History of Jeans.” About how jeans became a staple of clothing worldwide, it is one of six feature documentaries in the season, five of which were commissioned by George, the first Black woman to helm “American Experience.” George replaced Mark Samels, who retired from the series in 2020 after serving as executive producer of the program for 16 years.
“I have always thought of ‘American Experience’ as the single most important history series in the doc world, and the chance to build on the incredible legacy of the series, freshen it up a bit,...

The PBS documentary Woodstock: Three Days That Defined a Generation debuted last year in time for the 50th anniversary of that historic cultural happening. But with the country now in the throes of social upheaval, on a scale perhaps not seen since the 1960s, the film has taken on even greater relevance.
“It’s extremely timely to be talking about Woodstock right now, because I think you’d have to go back to that event to see as inspiring an example of generational unity, generational passion,” notes Woodstock director Barak Goodman. “We’re seeing it all around us now.”
The 1969 concert in upstate New York came to represent the essence of the counterculture movement of that earlier era.
“It was a statement of principle of rejecting an old way of living and embracing a new one,” continues Goodman. “And even though the present moment is cloaked in politics, I think...

In 2009, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences expanded Oscar’s best pic contenders from five to 10. Then-president Sid Ganis hoped this would open the category to animation, foreign-language films and documentaries.
Animation and international have scored a few best-picture noms, but docus remain the final frontier. Maybe 2019 is the year when they make it. There are certainly films this year worth consideration. Exhibit A: “Tell Me Who I Am,” directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Simon Chinn.
The story centers on identical twins, Alex and Marcus Lewis. After an accident, 18-year-old Alex went into a coma. When he awoke, he had no memory and recognized no one, except his brother. So Marcus began filling him in, in essence creating a lifetime of memories. It’s a gripping, emotional story, enhanced by expert filmmaking and its virtues stand as a good example of the unique beauty of documentaries.

As David Crosby has proven time and time again this year with his Ask Croz column, he’s down to answer any question that readers pose to him. Nothing is too bizarre, risqué or just downright nuts for him to tackle. He’s seen it all, done it all and he loves nothing more than telling the tale. In this newest round of Ask Croz questions, he deals with a husband that prefers porn over sex with his wife, a guy that is curious to try heroin just one time,...

Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis was just three years old when the original Woodstock festival took place, but he watched the film version obsessively as a kid and it played a huge role in shaping him as an artist. As he prepares for another leg of Dinosaur Jr.’s ongoing tour behind their recent slate of 1990s album reissues, Mascis spoke with Rolling Stone about his five favorite Woodstock performances.

This wasn’t in the movie, but I got the director’s cut of Hendrix...
