Great opening

I am completely pulled into this family's life. My heart hurts for them. Good opening episode. I want to know what's going to happen and how each situation is resolved. Thoughts that people actually endured similar situations is the true horror.

Creepy and skin crawling

Great start to the series. It gives a creepy feeling right from the start. Made me think how would I feel I was in their shoes as the new family moving in to a new town. It made my skin crawl.

Promising first episode
poinla3717 April 2021
I was expecting something super political and woke, but it's actually not.

The obvious racism is really part of the story and there's not too much about it. It's depicted in an extreme way that makes it ominous and weird.

That's the thing that I really liked in this episode, the ominous and dark tone, with a touch of fantasy/horror.

So far, so good, I just hope it's not gonna end like Lovecraft county, in which the first episodes were great and then it got terribly chaotic and messed up.

Warning: Spoilers
Wow, what an opening. Great acting. This is real. This is what happened in these suburban communities in the north. Racism isn't just a southern thing. Look at the true stories of Levittown.

As a person of color, this was a hard to watch. I ain't gonna lie, I had to drink some wine to reduce my anxiety. My white husband enjoyed it, too. We're going to watch one episode every weekend.

This is taking place in the year of my birth. I lived in San Fransisco at the time, in a predominately white neighborhood that also had some newly arrived Europeans, four black families, including us and we had zero problems.

Yet, somehow, by the tender age of six or seven, I already knew white people hated black people. I don't know how I knew. I just did. My family did not talk about race or badmouth whites.

I just knew.

Getting back to the story, obviously, mom has experienced some drama. The baby boy at the beginning is no where to be found. I imagine they are escaping the south, but also trying to escape a tragedy, which I assume we'll find out more in flashback.

I'm wondering if that white woman wasn't a witch who cast a spell on this nuclear family.

This is a something to watch, whether white or black, as group and have some open discussions about.

Be honest!

I am enthralled

WOW! I felt creeped out from the first scene to the last. I did feel sympathy for the family and the stupid they have to endure. I feel like there is SO much more to what is going on and I want to know what it is. The obvious racism is to distract from the underlying creepy issue. Do not let it distract you. I cannot give anything away. You MUST watch it for yourself. This was labeled as a black voice show. It is a creepy show. The main actors are black. I did not watch it because it was black voice. I watched it because it looked interesting. I am glad I did. My family and I love it.

Started with a bang

A lot people are tired of stories of racism against black people but the racism is still prevalent everywhere. It is not an american problem but the world suffers from Pre-conceived notions about people from other races. The visuals and the background score are really creepy especially the White lady in the beginning at the end. A Good start . Looking forward.

Really great start!
striklix28 April 2024
Now I'm kind of surprised by how much I thoroughly enjoyed watching this one, but I am happy to be able to say that I did. A really fantastic start of a season that develops the perfect amount of intrigue and suspense that really helps to keep the show entertaining to watch and really makes me want to check out more of it. Plus the performances here are already something to praise, some really great acting from all four of the main family, plus the horrible excellency that comes from our racist neighbors who are terrifying honestly. And it also has a little supernatural vibe to it that I definitely wanna learn more about.

Stay Away From My Home!!!!!
wandernn1-81-68327415 August 2021
Okay I guess I can forgive them for the fail Patti Labelle version of over the Rainbow to start. Doesn't beat Judy Garland's version any day.

So A Black Family in the 50s moves to Compton CA.

Hilarity Ensues.

But theres some kind of creepy horror vibe when the little git sees a dark figure in the new house. After this encounter, little girl is either possessed or half crazy.

Ruh Roh their dog has been murdered!!

And Mommy has a crazed moment out in front of her House.

I liked the end. Challenge??? Accepted????

I'll give 2 stars to the ending. 7/10.

Don't do it.

I enjoyed the initial 8 episodes including episode one but I left a one star rating to prevent those from making it till episodes nine and 10 like I did and totally waste almost 2 hours. I just can't explain what happened.

Nothing special...yet!
Go_For_The_Jugular10 April 2021
I'm not seeing what's so special so far...but I've only watched the first episode. So this review and score is for episode 1 only.

As I say, there's nothing special about this episode.

Thought I was watching 'Us' half of the time.

Hopefully, future episodes get better.

Grey is the new black...
omendata18 May 2021
After reading the other reviews on here I must say the producers and writers of this series have really accomplished what they set out to do and that is to stoke division in the USA and wherever else this gets shown.

Of course audiences have been numbed to violence and overt sex on tv , foul language and low brow mediocrity is the norm so what do we give the sheeple to wake them from slumber , well it is controversy and in your face politics - Should really have titled it "Them and Us" with bad old white man doing the "other" man down and in the end god will smite us white evil doers asunder and Us well they will ride to heaven on a winged chariot devoid of blame or consequence...And I actually quite enjoyed some of it I have to say!

You have to give them credit; from the reviews it seems it has worked rather well from the equally skewed reviews ranging from a 1 to a 10 and neither betwixt or between shall be another opinion which illustrates the rabid war that is going on in America right now!

If ever there was a deliberate attempt to incite controversy then this has to be it - Outlandish? Offensive? Daring?

Make your own mind up but it is definitely not a poor 1 out of ten and neither is it a 10 masterpiece - somewhere in the middle, that grey area you just cannot fathom!
