Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is taking this Emmy race seriously.
With stars Donald Glover and Maya Erskine leading the charge, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” which draws inspiration from the 2005 movie featuring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, is set to compete in the drama categories at this year’s awards ceremony.
Crafted by Glover and Francesca Sloane, the show’s debut season stretches across eight episodes, centering on John and Jane Smith, secret agents who pose as a married couple while working for a shadowy corporation. Its blend of comedy and drama offered the potential to categorize it in either genre for awards consideration.

This article contains spoilers up to episode 4 of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
The opening to director Doug Liman's "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" set the tone for that movie, following a pair of super-spies for opposing agencies who, through sheer coincidence, happen to be a married couple living secret double lives. After the framing device places Brad Pitt's John Smith and Angelina Jolie's Jane Smith in couple's therapy, we flashback to the sultry circumstances of their original meet-cute and the whirlwind romance that ultimately resulted in a marriage that's now on autopilot. We quickly realize that they're both impossibly good-looking, extremely proficient at their jobs and basically never make a single mistake ... until their last assignment puts them on a collision course with one another, at least.
Now, it's Prime Video's turn to revitalize this concept through its own series, as spearheaded by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane. In place of Pitt and Jolie,...

This article contains spoilers for the final episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Through its eight-episode run, Mr. and Mrs. Smith follows the familiar rhythms and milestones of any romantic relationship, with appropriate episode titles to match. From “First Date” to “First Vacation” to “Do You Want Kids?” and even “Couples Therapy,” John Smith (Donald Glover) and Jane Smith (Maya Erskine) go through a journey of self discovery and come to understand each other better as well.
That’s why it’s more than a bit discomfiting that the eighth and final episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith is named “A Breakup.” True to the title’s promise, John and Jane break up in this finale and they break up hard. Here the Prime Video series begins to resemble its 2005 film inspiration more than ever as John and Jane engage in an epic life-or-death battle across Manhattan, culminating in a...

Plot: Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?

After a 21-month run that saw him perform for more than 700,000 fans, the promise of Tom Segura’s “I’m Coming Everywhere” world tour has finally been fulfilled.
If you’re wondering if this long haul was a test of endurance for the globally popular stand-up comic, who has been working the circuit for nearly 20 years, the answer is an unqualified yes. “I mean, I’ve said it, but…I signed up for too much, so it felt really good to get to the end,” Segura says with a laugh. “I very vividly remember the last few shows counting down and being like, ‘I can’t believe this is finally coming to an end.’ But, you know, it’s 21 months and like 303 shows. It was just outrageous.”

Some time ago, comedian Tom Segura teased on his Ymh Studios podcasts that he’d decided to self-finance and shoot a mystery video project, with further details to be disclosed at a later date. And at long last, they’re beginning to emerge, as Segura has disclosed to Deadline his sale to a streaming service of a pilot in which he’ll star.
“We…produced a pilot that we sold to one of the streamers…We financed it, we produced it, wrote it,” Segura shared during a Zoom call late last week. “This was a hundred percent like the podcast way of thinking, which was like, ‘Just make the thing.’ So we just made it, spent a fortune doing it, but I think for the right reasons. And I think they’ll probably make an announcement about it soon, maybe when the strike resolves. But we’re very excited about it,...

Plot: Billie is plagued by blackouts and strange visions that lead her to discover she’s stuck in a series of time loops, possibly related to her mysterious new girlfriend.
Review: Dementia is one of the scariest things I can think of. Losing the ability to access your own memories and being unable to recognize your loved ones is downright awful. So I was really interested when they brought up the concept and seemed like that would be the main idea at play Jagged Mind. I feel silly being so wrong. What starts as an interesting idea with our lead Billy seeing her death over and over, unable to properly comprehend time, swiftly devolves into a near Lifetime movie. Or maybe that was just the lighting.
Knowing that this started as a short film, First Date, (as part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween) I can see elements that carried over here.

Kelley Kali’s Jagged Mind is a unique kind of erotic thriller. Not only does the film focus on a lesbian couple, Kali and writer Allyson Morgan broach a subject rarely seen in queer cinema: domestic abuse. The film approaches its weighty topic with urgency and graveness, but the distinct genre elements make everything more digestible.
Much like its basis, Morgan’s short film First Date, Jagged Mind shows the lengths some people will go to to be with the person they love. Or more accurately, the person they are obsessed with. Unlike other thrillers, though, this one features a time loop. The audience is thrown in head first as the main character, Billie (played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers), almost immediately experiences another blackout. Billie is clueless apart from a troubling sense of déjà vu, however viewers will quickly figure out what (or who) is behind this strange malady.

A coming-of-age comedy inspired by Andy Cohen’s bestselling book Most Talkative is in the works at NBC. Titled Most Talkative, the project hails from Universal Television, with Blumhouse Television attached.
Written by Gordon Greenberg and Michael Weiner and directed by Emmy winner Todd Holland, Most Talkative follows a fictionalized 13-year-old Andy Cohen coming of age in 1980s St Louis. He’s gay, loves the Cardinals, his bar mitzvah tutor is a stoner, and his soap opera-fueled imagination makes him both the life of the party and the source of endless drama. Most Talkative is a series about not fitting into any one box and figuring out how to build your own.
Greenberg and Weiner will executive produce with Cohen. Holland will direct and executive produce. Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, Jeremy Gold and Chris Dickie will executive produce for Blumhouse Television. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio.

Krysta Rodriguez (Halston) and Lauren Lapkus (Good Girls) have been tapped as the leads in CBS’ multi-camera comedy pilot Sober Companion, from Jane the Virgin creator/executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman and CBS Studios, where Urman is under an overall deal.
Written by Gracie Glassmeyer and David Rosenthal from a story they co-wrote with Urman, Sober Companion revolves around Eliza (Rodriguez), a hot-mess alcoholic who owns a bookstore/bar with her uncle in New Orleans and who is forced to get her life together when the court appoints her an exhaustingly upbeat sober companion, Shelley (Lapkus), with whom she has to live 24/7.
The comedy was originally set up at Fox during the 2013-2014 cycle where it went to a single-camera pilot with Justin Long in the title role and Nick Frost as the co-lead. The project, which was written by Urman and Rosenthal, didn’t make it past the pilot...

Angels and Airwaves have released a new single and video, “Losing My Mind,” that calls back to lead singer Tom DeLonge’s days in Blink-182.
In the band’s 2001 video for “First Date,” DeLonge plays a hippie version of himself named Boomer, performing alongside his bandmates in a rundown garage. In the Angels and Airwaves clip, DeLonge returns as Boomer’s older brother Disco, who joins TikTok dance star Rampage for a night on the town in Las Vegas. Yes, the backstory’s timeline is confusing — how is the tracksuit-wearing Disco older than Boomer?...

Manuel Crosby And Darren Knapp Make Great Impressions On Their ‘First Date’, A Hilarious Dark Comedy
Photo: 'First Date' 'First Date' plays a little like the greatest hits collection of all your favorite Tarantino, Judd Apatow, and Seth Rogen movie scenes spliced together into an experimental hybrid of a film. A passionate debut from directing newcomers Manuel Crosby and Darren Knapp, 'First Date' enthusiastically pays homage to the raunchy, charming comedies of yesteryear revolving around innocent law-abiding citizens caught up in precarious, but thrilling, situations. If you're a cinephile, it might be difficult watching this movie without triggering Vietnam-style flashbacks to works like 'Superbad', 'Pineapple Express', 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back', and all the other stories that 'First Date' takes inspiration and guidance from. More concerned with paying homage to ’90s-era Quentin Tarantino than telling a contemporary coming-of-age tale with believable stakes, co-helmers Manuel Crosby and Darren Knapp’s debut feature “First Date” saddles a young couple not with a romantic night out, but with a haphazard all-nighter crime-comedy that’s mostly unfunny and free of convincing suspense. Instead, we get a blood-soaked comedy of errors, full of wisecracking criminals, missed connections and shoot-’em-up set pieces.
Then again, how could the results feel genuine when the whole premise is based on an utterly unrealistic hypothesis? It goes something like this: Middle-class high school student Mike (likable newcomer Tyson Brown) talks cool neighbor Kelsey into go out with him. Problem is, he doesn’t have a ride, or much money. Eager to impress, he decides to drop the entirety of his limited funds on a pre-owned car, rather than doing something sensible, like calling...

"We can all get what we need from this situation." Magnolia has released the official trailer for First Date, an indie misadventure comedy from filmmakers Manuel Crosby & Darren Knapp, both making their feature directorial debut with this. It premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival this year, and stopped by the Independent Film Festival of Boston this spring. After being conned into buying a shady '65 Chrysler, Mike's first date plans with girl-next-door Kelsey implode as he finds himself targeted by criminals, the cops, and a crazy cat lady. Tyson Brown stars as Mike, with Shelby Duclos as his date, plus Jesse Janzen, Nicole Berry, Samuel Ademola, Ryan Quinn Adams, and Angela Barber. This did not get great reviews out of Sundance, and you can see why with this trailer. Good idea to play with, just doesn't look like a good film. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Manuel Crosby & Darren Knapp's First Date,...

First Date contains all the trappings of a first film. With a minimal budget, the technicality of Darren Knapp and Manuel Crosby’s debut feature falters, unable to produce enticing visuals, professional sound mixing, or a skilled ensemble. Instead, the film must hope its script can provide the necessary laughs, and without a packed, weary Sundance audience egging on the mayhem of the story, it fails to succeed. Eased by the sheer insanity of its final act, First Date represents an admirable stab at the classic plot of a first date gone wrong, but it lacks the punch it so desperately is attempting to deliver.
Following regular high schooler Mike (a wide-eyed Tyson Brown), the events of First Date occurs over the course of a single evening, as the night grows in madness. Buying a used car from a shady dealer after borrowing money from his parents, Mike unwittingly enters...

An out-all-night odyssey in which romance is interrupted by a compounding series of mishaps and crimes, Manuel Crosby and Darren Knapp’s First Date follows in the tradition of similarly named predecessors like Date Night, Blake Edwards’ Blind Date, et cetera. In this case, the misadventure is mostly had by the would-be suitor (Tyson Brown), who gets waylaid time and again before he can even meet the longtime crush (Shelby Duclos) he can’t believe agreed to go out with him. This is the first feature for both leads, and the writer-directors would’ve done well to concentrate more on them — prioritizing chemistry ...
A first date can really be stressful. What do you wear? What do you say? Do you try to act cooler than you actually are or just be yourself? And if you’re a teenager without a car, what the hell are you going to drive to pick your date up in?
