Admit it: you've always been a little curious about "Dungeons & Dragons," haven't you? Maybe you heard someone talking about the game at work. Or maybe you have a cousin who spoke about their home campaigns at the last family gathering. But with the release of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves," suddenly you're seeing tabletop roleplaying games everywhere you look. It feels like a sign from on high — or, at the very least, a blossoming hyperfixation.
But that hyperfixation comes with a lot of questions. For example, how do you learn more about roleplaying games? Are there games other than "Dungeons & Dragons" you should try? And even if you know what you want to play, how do you find a group to join? Thankfully, as someone who started playing roleplaying games at the tender age of 35, I have some pretty strong opinions on how to make the leap.

Production has begun in Brisbane, Australia, on dramatic comedy film “A Savage Christmas.”
The story is that of a trans woman who, after years of estrangement, returns home for Christmas with her new boyfriend. Expecting her transition to be the focus, it is instead overshadowed by family secrets and lies which threaten not only their lives but another Christmas lunch.
The film is written, directed and produced by feature debutant Madeleine Dyer, who has pitched it as stylistically resembling “Death at a Funeral” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” Screen Australia’s head of content Grainne Brunsdon said the film “blends off-beat humor while reflecting our nation’s diversity.” Dyer co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Mulvihill and Max Jahufer.
The film is also the debut production from Roaring Entertainment, a newly formed company by Brisbane-based producers Ben McNeill and Mulvihill.

ITV Studios has acquired a majority stake in Australian producer Lingo Pictures — marking its first acquisition in the country.
ITV’s production and sales arm paid an undisclosed amount for the Sydney-based company, which is best known for Upright, the Sky and Foxtel Australia drama starring Tim Minchin and House of the Dragons‘ Milly Alcock. Deadline understands the deal value is in the eight-figure US dollars region.
The deal highlights the growing value international production groups are seeing in Australia, whose favorable tax breaks system is increasingly attractive, and Australian dramas, with Paramount+’s Last King of the Cross one of the most sought-after titles available at Mipcom last month.
Lingo owners Helen Bowden and Jason Stephens will continue to head up Lingo, which will now sit in ITV Studios’ international production arm, which Lisa Perrin leads as Managing Director.

House of the Dragon actor Milly Alcock spoke about the extreme nerves she had going into the massive HBO series.
Alcock plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, one of the central characters, in the Game of Thrones prequel alongside stars like Matt Smith and Paddy Considine.
The 22-year-old had few credits to her name before the role, dropping out of school to play misfit Meg in the Australian drama Upright.
“It was incredibly new and exciting and daunting, because I've only ever done Australian TV, so the budgets are immensely different; they're not in the same league,” Alcock told Nylon magazine in a new interview.
“I didn’t fully understand how big of a scale something like that could be until I stepped on set and I was mortified,” she continued.
“You quickly adapt and it all becomes quite normal. But the first two, three months I just thought I was going to get fired constantly.

Playing a Targaryen is a tall order. Actors need both regal composure and would-burn-you-alive-if-you-put-a-foot-wrong unpredictability. They have to be fierce, boil with power, and somehow look convincing soaring into a scene on the back of a dragon while wearing a questionable wig.
Playing a Targaryen princess is an even taller order because actors have to do all of the above while also being about 12 years old.. Happily, House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock, who plays the young Rhaenyra, is more than up to that challenge – as anybody who saw her in 2019 series Upright will already know.
Upright is by no means Alcock’s first acting job, the 22-year-old has already racked up major roles on Australian TV including spy thriller Pine Gap, Starz crime series The Gloaming and serial killer drama Reckoning. Upright though, is Alcock’s first co-lead and the first show to really prove what she’s capable of on screen.

Milly Alcock was at a friend’s house when she got the phone call from her agent that would change her life.
The 22-year-old Australian actress had auditioned for House of the Dragon multiple times via Zoom, reading lines for a mysterious character named “Yr.” She had never watched Game of Thrones (she was only 10 when the original show debuted) but she knew this was potentially the biggest opportunity she had ever had. When the call came that she landed the pivotal role of the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, she needed all of her acting skills to not immediately give the news away.

HBO’s long-awaited “Game of Thrones” prequel “House of the Dragon” premiered to a huge audience last Sunday, courting nearly 10 million viewers on premiere night, and making actress Milly Alcock, who plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, not one, but two of the top Google trending topics related to the show.
“What?! Oh my God,” Alcock replies when TheWrap makes her aware that fans were clamoring to know more about the Australian actress, searching “Milly Alcock,” and “How old is Milly Alcock?”, as she was boldly introduced to viewers from atop a dragon, and quickly made an impression as the quietly astute daughter to the king, looking to carve her own path in a realm ruled by men.

From an Orthodox rabbi in Sebastian Lelio’s Disobedience to Tony Soprano’s tragic mentor in The Many Saints of Newark, Nivola has that unique ability to disappear into his characters. The Boston native is currently starring alongside Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza in Jeff Baena’s Spin Me Round, which subverts the romantic comedy genre in a welcomed way. Nivola is mostly known for drama, but he’s grateful for Riley Stearns’ indie black comedy The Art of Self-Defense (2019), as it’s created more and more of these comedic opportunities for him.

Newcomer Milly Alcock stars as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO's highly anticipated "Game of Thrones" prequel, "House of the Dragon." The actor made her big debut during the show's world premiere on Aug. 21, and she's already made quite the impression as the new heir to Viserys I's throne - but she has big shoes to fill as a core part of the show's story.
Alcock, who hails from Australia, has been acting since she was a teen, landing roles on shows like "High Life," "Pine Gap," and "The Gloaming." Despite coming from a "sporty family," the actor says she still managed to find her creative passion. "I think I got my interest in acting because everybody was uninterested in acting," she told Vogue Australia of her family in 2020. "I grew up in a predominantly rugby union household; it doesn't make any sense."

Australian pay-tv and streaming service Foxtel is forging ahead with its originals slate.
Long-serving Foxtel executive Brian Walsh, who recently formally extended his consultancy agreement, will serve as executive director of drama for the Foxtel Group. He will oversee all Australian commissioned scripted content for Foxtel and its streaming service Binge.

Details of the sequel have been kept under wraps, although Godzilla Vs Kong director Adam Wingard told Deadline last year he would “absolutely love to continue” with the franchise. He added, “The clear starting point we teed up (in Gvk), exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. The final curtain has come down on Upright Citizens Brigade’s Sunset Boulevard theater. The comedy troupe says the venue has been sold as the group has “been unable to make mortgage payments during this extended shutdown.”
News about the Ucb Theatre comes eight months after the troupe founded by Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh and others closed its New York venue. The group said on social media, however, that it is “still working to maintain Franklin [Avenue] space and look forward to being legally allowed to gather again.” Ucb notes that digital classes will continue.
The 30-year-old improv and sketch-comedy troupe is led by co-founders Poehler, Walsh, Matt Besser and Ian Roberts, who said wrote, “We know this theater was a home for so many, and so many people were responsible for helping it grow. We want to thank all of those people and the New York community who were also significantly impacted by recent closures.

For almost 20 years now, Tim Minchin has been one of the most arresting and enigmatic performers, with his flamboyant showmanship, eclectic musical stylings, and razor-sharp wit seeing him go from an up-and-coming musician from his childhood home of Perth, Australia, to a critical success at comedy festivals around the world.

Brian Walsh.
Belying fears that Foxtel would cut back on local commissions following the Federal Government’s media reforms, the pay TV platform expects to have three Australian dramas in production next year.
Two are intended to be returning series: a fresh take on the crime genre to replace Wentworth, the other a family drama to fill the gap left by A Place to Call Home.
Brian Walsh, who heads the Foxtel Originals division that was created in a restructure in August orchestrated by group CEO Patrick Delany, today reaffirmed the company’s commitment to drama, factual and lifestyle programming after the government halved the obligation on pay drama channels to invest 10 per cent of their annual revenues on local content.
“The new quota system will provide some confidence to the production sector but by no means does it indicate that that is the limit to which we are investing in local production,...
