When Morse finds a letter to Hollis Binks from his optician, it has the firm's logo at the top of the page - an old-fashioned pair of wire frame glasses with a disembodied eye in either lens. This image is identical to the image found in the 1974 film on a huge billboard ("the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg") past which various characters drive in the course of the story, and into which one car crashes, causing a fatality.
A man named Hollis Binks is murdered (having drowned in concrete) after refusing to authorise an unsafe building project. In the Roman Polanski film, a man named Hollis Mulwray is murdered (by being forcibly drowned) after refusing to authorise an unsafe dam project.
