Verdict
An Irish horror short, I Am Not A Monster is an unusual creature that gets as much right as it does wrong.
It tells the story of Ambrose, an estranged son who makes a surprise appearance to his brothers engagement dinner at a stately home. The family don't like him, his mental health is shattered and he appears to have a face in the back of his head that whispers to him to do bad things.
Curious and a little disturbing it sets the scene nicely, develops the characters wonderfully and then delivers the exact predictable finale you'll expect and in a very underwhelming manner.
I'm not going to say that the short has a good idea because it doesn't, but it's well enough made and a harmless way of killing 20 minutes.
The Good
+ Well made
+ Fairly interesting
The Bad
- Gets under your skin
- Poor finale
Rants
I was just looking back over my history with Irish movies and I have to say, it's not good. Excluding films which were multi country collaborations I have just 2 Irish features at 7/10 and nothing above. The two are let the Wrong One In (2021) and Nails (2017). Damn shame, I love the accent but to be blunt they're not the most talented filmmakers.
