Channel 4, a publicly owned broadcaster, is set to let 200 employees go as well as vacate its Victoria-based offices.
Here’s a depressing news story for your Monday afternoon.
Channel 4 is cutting 200 jobs, as reported here by The Guardian. That represents about 15 percent of its 1300-strong workforce, making this a huge shift.
One of the reasons behind the mass layoffs is what’s being described as “the worst TV advertising downturn since 2008.”
The success of streaming services like Netflix and Disney+ has completely changed the advertising world, and Channel 4 is clearly feeling the effects. Earlier this month, it was reported that Channel 4 was looking to cut its £108 million annual wage bill drastically.
On top of those 200 employees being let go, the broadcaster is looking to close 40 unfilled roles as well as merge commissioning departments.
Channel 4 has been focusing on moving its workforce outside of London, and is thus selling its Victoria-based offices.

Strike Goes Global
“What happens in America happens here”: More than 20 countries came together for a global day of solidarity Wednesday, as protestors showed support for striking scribes in the U.S. In the UK, Germany, France, Korea and many other places, writers around the world showed why shepherding the WGA through its labor dispute matters. We were on the ground in the UK and Germany, and in the former a succession (see what we did there) of senior scribes along with around 200 others lined up to show support, including Jesse Armstrong, Russell T. Davies, Jack Thorne, Charlie Brooker and, from across the pond, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace. “What happens in America happens here,” declared Doctor Who showrunner Davies, who revealed to Deadline...

Exclusive: Another one bites the dust at Channel 4. The UK broadcaster has canceled The Big Narstie Show.
Channel 4 informed producers earlier this year that the BAFTA-winning entertainment show will not return for Season 6, though the news has only just percolated amid an ongoing content cull. Channel 4 said it was a creative rather than a cost-cutting decision.
Hosted by rapper Big Narstie and comedian Mo Gilligan, The Big Narstie Show launched in 2018 and established itself as an anarchic vehicle for chat, musical performances, and topical comedy.
It was produced by Expectation, the outfit behind Clarkson’s Farm and David Schwimmer comedy Intelligence, and Dice Productions Entertainment, which is co-owned by Big Narstie.
Channel 4 said: “The decision not to recommission a sixth series of The Big Narstie Show is not part of our response to challenges in the advertising market.
“We are immensely proud of the five series we have made...

If there’s one thing celebrities love, it’s insisting that they’re just like you. Usually, those comments are met with eyerolls, but when Mo Gilligan tells you he’s a normal guy, I for one believe him. He may rarely be off our TV screens, but the stand-up comedian counteracts the glitz and glamour, the live TV and awards’ shows, by gardening and scoping out deals in his local Sainsbury’s. “I’m very much into really mundane, core normality things because there’s things I do in my life that I don’t want to normalise yet,” he tells me.
You can’t blame Gilligan for being overwhelmed by his success. In a few years, the 34-year-old has gone from stand-up comic (performing under the name Mo the Comedian) and social media star to a Bafta-winning presenter. Looking for entertainment on a Friday night? He’s hosting...

“Live from London…It’s Saturday Night”?
NBC’s iconic late-night sketch show could be hitting British shores in the future. Variety has confirmed that a U.K. adaptation of the format is in early development at Comcast-backed pay-tv operator Sky.
The tie-up is hardly surprising given both Sky and NBC share the same parent company, and such collaborations have been mooted ever since Comcast outbid Fox to snap up the European media company for $39 billion back in 2018.
“Saturday Night Live” has been adapted in a number of territories, including China, Japan, West Asia (also known as the Middle East), France, Italy, Poland and Brazil. The show also recently returned to Korea after a few years’ hiatus, as reported by Variety earlier this year.
Given the U.S./U.K. crossover of talent, a British version of the show could be substantial, and it’s believed local comedians are...

The crime thriller “Killing Eve” leads with five bids including Best Drama Series. The BAFTAs were so impressed by the show that the rule requiring that the first airing be in the UK was waived. Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh and Jodie Cormier are both up for Best Drama Actress. Also nominated are supporting players Kim Bodnia and Fiona Shaw.
Another international hit, “Bodyguard,” is also up for Best Drama Series. But while leading lady Keeley Hawes was nominated, the show’s star, Richard Madden, was snubbed despite winning a Golden Globe. Unlike the Emmys, where Madden is a strong contender,...

Expectation Entertainment has not only met expectations but exceeded them in the two years since it was set up, but given the track-record of its co-CEOs perhaps this should not be such a surprise.
The company, led by Peter Fincham, formerly controller of BBC One and director of television at ITV, and Tim Hincks, latterly president of Endemol Shine Group, is making 13 series this year, spread across all genres, with more set to follow.
Its series include “The Big Narstie Show,” a chat-show hosted by a grime artist, ordered by Channel 4, “Superkids: Breaking Away from Care,” a documentary series about kids in care who take part in a public performance, again ordered by Channel 4, a coming-of-age sitcom about a gay school-kid, “In My Skin,” produced for the BBC, and cookery challenge show “The Brigade,” another BBC show.
Speaking Sunday at MipFormats, which runs as an appetizer to this week...

Channel 4 and Netflix have renewed “The End of the F***ing World” for a second season. The renewal was one of a number of new commissions – including a new drama from Russell T. Davies (“Queer as Folk”) – announced by the British broadcaster ahead of the Edinburgh Television Festival.
BAFTA- and Emmy-nominated “The End of the F***ing World” enjoyed the best launch week ever for an exclusive single series or stunt launch when it debuted on All 4, the broadcaster’s streaming platform, last October. The teen comedy drama, which was created and written by Charlie Covell, based on a graphic novel by Charles S. Forsman, then launched on Netflix in January, finding a new legion of fans.
“We’re so proud that this global success story began at Channel 4 and that a second series is on its way,” said Beth Willis, Channel 4’s head of drama. “Charlie’s witty,...

British broadcaster Channel 4 is doubling down on grime with a three-part documentary series set in Blackpool, handing The Big Narstie Show a second season and giving Narstie’s co-host Mo Gilligan his own series.
The network revealed its latest slate of youth-skewing shows at the Edinburgh International TV Festival.
It’s Grime Up North (w/t), which is produced by BBC Studios, follows the lives of a group of young MCs on the Blackpool grime scene. It will follow artists such as Little T (aka Josh Tate), Sophie Aspin and Millie B as well as a group of others striving for a break. The doc series was ordered by Channel 4’s Formats Commissioning Editor Lee McMurray and departing Head of Formats Dom Bird. The series is produced by BBC Studios’ Auntie Productions, whose Creative Directors are Sam Bickley and Samantha Anstiss. The executive producer is Kat Lennox and series producer is Danny Fildes.
