The film was shot over a period of 3 years. Starting as a short film and slowly expanding into a full feature. Jake Thomas Armbruster and Omar Saavedra were writing scenes and shooting them as they went along, many not making the final film.
The role of Sara was originally cast with Ingrid Bisu in the role. Due to scheduling conflicts, she was forced to leave the project after shooting two critical scenes. One being the dinner scene where she was at the table with only minimal lines. The crew was forced to take her out in post-production and rewrite the character out of the scene so they could seamlessly get newcomer Zoe Sydney to replace Bisu.
Omar Saavedra, Josue Aguirre and Victor Boneva all appeared in director Jake Thomas Armbruster's short film Animus and reunited for Frontera.
