Decent episode but lack of attention for discussion. The world is changing, kids not the most important thing that human being think about any more.

Casecation

Warning: Spoilers
I think we will all be singing the "Casecation" song tomorrow at work.

It wasn't a bad episode. The highlight was the Amy and Jake chemistry, along with the Holt appearance.

Pam was just an incredibly annoying character. Her presence prevented me from calling it a great episode.

A very misunderstood episode Warning: Spoilers
I've seen a lot of people criticise this episode for portraying Jake and Amy 'wrong' but I completely disagree.

One thing that people say is that her saying she would 'start over' if he didn't want kids isn't manipulation and more just her saying it how it is, she's allowed an opinion too and maybe for her kids are the most important thing. I'm not really sure how people expected her to react to this bombshell that he dropped, and although it sucks, it's a pretty reasonable response.

A second thing people say is that it isn't feminist to have Amy want kids? Which is just plain silly because feminism is about equality and CHOICE, it don't mean she has to avoid and traditional roles.

Genuinely, one of the best episodes, it just takes a bit of empathy to see this.

People seem to have an issue any time Brooklyn tackles a serious subject. It's smart the way they handle it. It's a comedy series, so adding in this now really doesn't warrant "oh why did this not happen before they got married?". Yeah, that's obvious. But it doesn't negate the points. It's how people feel. The bomb scene was well done.

Detective Shield

This topic has always been a very serious one, think they should have left this one for a different show.... However, I was more concerned with Amy wearing her Detective shield instead of her Sgt Shield. Was that a goof.

Kids or no kids
Misha080914 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode was mostly funny, but it was weird to see that Jake not wanting to have children.

This was never implied on the show. Even in the episode where he and Amy babysat Terry's children, Jake was funny and sweet and even commented on how sweet kids are.

So the plot him not wanting to be a dad does not add up.

Become a dad or single. We know which one you'll choose..
MorganX-18 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode comes pretty soon after a very relevant episode following Jake getting epiphone after epiphone about just how ingrained sexism is in modern society. While occasionally a bit in its presentation, that episode presented some great points and ideas in an entertaining manner. This episode, however, creates an awful atmosphere between Jake and Amy, where Amy is a broody wannabe-mother and Jake is pretty definitively non-paternal. In fact Jake (quite justifiably) has some severe psychological reasons for not wanting to become a dad. When these concerns are aired it goes to a Debate Club style argument in which Jake's arguments are actually dismissed as excessively emotional. There is also a scene in which Terry is vehemently telling Jake that there is no way he should be going into fatherhood unless he is 100% certain. This is probably the most sensible moment of the episode and it is a throwaway line, played for laughs.

There wasn't a single point in this episode that I anticipated a scenario in which Amy accepted what Jake felt. It was always going to wind up with Jake deciding that Amy was right, and that he did want kids. And that's the problem with this episode. Two episodes beforehand we are talking feminism - differences in perception and the need for equal treatment, regardless of gender. Good. That's something we should be talking about. Now we are criticising a man for being too emotional and bullying a guy into agreeing to have a child, even though he has stated that is not what he wants basically because his wife's body clock is going to expire! Yeah, that's got issues on a couple of levels...

Kids or else
traciandjasonmallory16 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The moments with Holt were great as usually but the whole episode is overshadowed by the terrible way Amy treats Jake. The episode focuses on the fact that Jake and Amy never discussed having kids and Jake doesn't want too. That's when it all goes downhill.

Amy gives Jake an ultimatum, we have babies or we get divorced. During a debate Jake repeatedly talks about his feelings and fears and not only is that ignored but made fun of. Then Rosa offers to bully Jake into giving in. If the roles were reversed people would have been outraged but because its Jake it was totally fine to ignore how he feels and just give in.

The only reason it didnt get 1 star is because of Holt, Kevin and Terry. This episode not only set the characters back but also lost points for being flat out degrading to men.

I felt like I was watching a different show...
agerson2417 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
As everyone else has already mentioned, this episode just left a bad taste in my mouth. Amy threatened to divorce him he if he didn't want kids and that is just so out of character for her I felt like I was watching a different show. And then that wasn't mentioned again or in any follow up episode. No mention of how Jake handled that and was I'm sure devastated by the fact that Amy could just so easily cast him aside. They just hugged and went out to get dinner and brainstorm baby names. It just felt so out of character for both of them and the story was incomplete and the way they handled an important topic was just disturbing. B99 is usually really good at addressing serious issues with a sense of grace and compassion and I don't understand how none of the actors or writers or directors or producers etc picked up on how terribly this was done. You can't just have a throwaway comment with the serious threat of divorce and then not address that conversation at all or ever again or the impact it has..

The way Amy bullies Jake is beyond weird and out of character. The only time I've felt uncomfortable with an episode of 99.

Almost disturbing
shadow-3641222 December 2019
Jake said multiple times that he isn't ready to be a father. He also said that he doesn't think he would be a good one, and that he doesn't think he can raise a kid well.

Amy's ultimatum is also disgusting. If you carefully enough about him to litterally marry him, you wouldn't divorce him over not having a kid.

The absolute worst part is that when Jake says he'll do it later but he's just not ready now, Amy says that's not enough, and that she wants a child or it's off.

This episode is honestly just toxic. This is a truley horrible episode.

Big dissapointment
carly_hope14 April 2019
Usually, when the show takes on difficult topics they get it so very right. Which is why it was the more startling to sit through this episode.

While Jake came out of it as wonderful as ever I cannot say the same for Amy. Her whole attitude and behavior regarding the topic was very off-putting and unfair and left a huge dent in my appreciation of the character. It was interesting to see Rosa and Terry's input but both was handled poorly.

The jokes too fell flat and the resolution left a sour taste in my mouth.

I cannot remember the show ever disappointing me this much.

New Title: Amy's manipulative, and this writing is awful. Warning: Spoilers
I LOVE b99, and how it normally gets hard topics right, but this... no. As a childfree woman, I found Amy's manipulation of and dismissal of Jake was abhorrent. He lists completely valid reasons on why he's iffy about having kids - timetables, daddy issues, money, etc. Terry, one of two parents in the main cast, was the only person to back Jake up (Terry was GREAT, very understanding to Jake, being honest about kids). Rosa, a childfree woman said she'd BULLY Jake into wanting kids. Which is very no bueno.

After Jake almost died, he does a 180, now kids are his favourite thing ever. Which makes no sense.

Essentially - terrible writing, bad episode. This is very clearly an awful episode.

Weird feeling
m-kortenhoeven12 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This is the first time I actually got a weird feeling after watching a B99 episode. I felt like I got to know Amy in a different way and she really disappointed me as a character. Even giving Jake an ultimatum after like five minutes really didn't feel fair, and angrily trying to go guarding the hall with Rosa instead of staying with Jake. You could see how that upset him. I really felt like Amy was being unfear. All that while I felt that Jake tried to acknowledge Amy's feelings the entire time. Her character might have been just like this for one episode but it had this crazy and negative vibe to it. I am keen to see how this unfolds in later episodes.

Disappointing
lightningstorm-2402917 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS*** I absolutely love Brooklyn 99 and I think this is the first episode I just couldn't like. Jake and Amy have a serious difference of opinions when it comes to having kids. Amy wants them and Jake doesn't. This is something that should have been discussed before marriage but it wasn't, and it was handled all wrong. Amy refuses to accept Jake's very valid points of why he feels he's not ready to have kids, going so far as to force him to debate to try to change his mind. She then gives him and ultimatum, saying he has to decided right then and there whether he wants kids or not, beciase she needs to k ow whether she needs to tsrt over o not! What the heck?!?! Not only is this out of character for Amy, but why would you marry someone then tell them if they don't want something you do, that you'll leave them? Jake's fears were brushed off as silly and dumb, while everyone seemed to be on Amy's side. At the end of the episode Jake decides he wants kids, though he reasons it differently, he is still terrified of having kids and is saying yes to keep her. I was so disappointed with this, no one should be forced into having kids. Even the attempts at humor fell flat as soon as the argument was introduced.

Reverse the genders and the world would be up in arms
skimachine-255644 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A paraphrased line from the show.. 'think about it for a 5 mins, a week, a month' but I need an answer (yes)... or else...'

If this were a husband telling this to his wife, there'd be an outcry etc. etc. but since it's the other way around, it can be brushed aside as comedy.

A jarring episode if there ever was one.

Easily my least favorite
trigunnerd21 September 2021
Such an important decision, solved in a few hours' time, after a lifetime of hesitation and fear. Rosa's reaction to the situation was the most disheartening. Amy has no history of desiring children, something someone so extremely organized would have brought up at least in passing. I hated how Jake was made out to be the bad guy, instead of both sides potentially being right or wrong.

The worst episode of the series

Amy trying to force Jake into having kids and threatening divorce? Yeah, this is atrocious and one of the rare bad episodes of B99. Not to mention how out of character Jake and Amy are.

Among the worst, most predictable, non-progressive of the show
logossun14 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
You know how B99 is a "progressive show"? All the trans-gay-LGBT rants and discussions being REALLY important? Weill, in this episode, that same show went the same tired, conservative way as countless (and I mean COUNTLESS) shows before: because, while we can be very progressive about skin colour, culture, sex or whatever else, everyone still always needs to agree to have children, because... I don't know why. They really had a chance to go in another direction here, but they completely blew it. A cop-out if I ever saw one. Together with the life-threatening situation that seems to come when you need it to change your mind. Boo.

Love the show, Disappointed with this episode
jodielwatt11 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I created an IMBD acc just to leave a review. I am a 33 year old woman who doesn't want kids and is constantly justifying why. My 2nd date with my now current boyfriend I told him this as I know it's a touchy subject given our ages. It makes zero sense that these 2 characters didn't have this conversation, especially someone as organised as Amy. I hated how Jake was pressured into having kids. I hate that Rosa picked a "side". I love Jake and Amy but would rather they breakup or go through counselling or anything then just 1 cave through an ultimatum. I also didn't like that Jake had to justify why he didn't want kids but not Amy as to why she did. I'm saying this because if she's worried about her clock then can't they adopt later down the road? Why do they have to be conceived through her?

Unbelievable
rawena_bll20 July 2019
Even though this show is all for laughs and giggles, when you're taking on such a serious matter, you should be careful how you put it. This episode gives me the chills because it tells you it is okay to bully your spouse into doing what you want. Which is an incredibly toxic thing to do obviously. And for once I thought I was getting to watch a decent comedy without characters getting the baby fever. I enjoyed Amy as she was, but of course, women need to have babies in order to be complete (!). I just don't understand how can these guys have written great episodes that support equality but still can't let go of the 19th century "all women have a biological clock and it takes them over" mentality. Jaw droppingly bad episode and mindset. Really disappointed.

Jake should've left Amy on the spot
James09879 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was very odd and out of character for Amy. Threatening to leave if someone doesn't want kids is not love. No healthy relationship has a "start over" plan. If you actually love someone you'd never threaten to leave them over something like this.

Terrible writing, did not match at all the character that was established for Amy and was ridiculous in general.

Has the director even watched the show!?
clarkeylogan17 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Both Jake and Amy are wonderful people but for some reason this episode un intently makes Amy out to be some manipulative demon in an attempt from the writers to make Jake out to be some villain for not wanting to have kids. The strangest thing is when Amy threatens Jake with divorce. Very uncharacteristic and hypocritical considering in s4 ep22 she says she will wait for him to finish his 15 year prison sentence if thats what it will come to. By that time she will be 49 and well and truly past her time. Now that they have a child, I now see the couple to be kinda toxic. The only reason I didnt score lower is because the marriage best moments was wholesome and it seemed too end out well.

Iffy to say the least
markseebantobun12 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was completely out of character for Amy and Jake. Terry had the best line in the episode when he asked "you got married without talking if you want kids?". The weird thing is that Jake, despite his 'dad issues', had been the one who's wanted kids while Amy has always been more career-focused. The actual work on the case was well-written, however, and there was some comedy element to it (although significantly less than nearly every other episode), so it wasn't a total bore. Season 6 has been worse than previous seasons and this episode is no exception.
