Earlier this week Travis Scott treated fans to a repeat rendition of his song “Fe!N” During a headlining performance at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Scott played the track 10 times in a row (something he’s done previously at a show in Tulsa).
Speaking to host Jimmy Fallon during an interview on The Tonight Show, Scott explained that he feeds off his audience and tries to amp things up onstage.
“Man, I have the best fans in the world,” Scott told Fallon. “I go off the energy they give me.

Filmmaker Spike Lee has partnered with The Gersh Agency to create the Spike Fellows Program, a fellowship to support students at the Atlanta University Center Consortium which consists of three Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Morehouse College, Spelman College, and Clark Atlanta University.
The Spike Fellows Program is based on the principle that access plus exposure will create opportunities. Its inaugural class will consist of five graduating students from Aucc — selected by a panel including Lee, the Aucc community and Gersh management — who will receive academic debt relief, industry mentorship, post graduate internships and full-time employment, all provided by Gersh.
Gersh’s Head of Culture Jayson Council will lead the program, to which Lee and the agency have made a multi-year commitment. Its first cycle kicks off this month.

Robert Schwartzman is part of one of Hollywood’s great filmmaking dynasties, but when he ventured into directing himself, he discovered that the world of distribution for up-and-coming filmmakers was broken.
The multihyphenate, who is Francis Ford Coppola’s nephew, has acted in movies like “The Princess Diaries” — where he played Anne Hathaway’s love interest Michael Moscovitz in what became her breakout movie — and has fronted the rock band Rooney since 1999. In recent years, however, Schwartzman has become more ensconced in the family business, directing indie features such as “The Unicorn,” “Dreamland” and “The Argument.”
“I felt a frustration that certain films were being overlooked in the market, like when you don’t get into a film festival, and the movie doesn’t make the cut sometimes,” Schwartzman tells Variety. “It’s pretty emotionally devastating for a filmmaker to feel that rejection.”
He continues: “You want to put [the film] in...

Oscar hopefuls have been omnipresent at the Toronto International Film Festival for more than 40 years. Chariots of Fire (1981), American Beauty (1999) and Green Book (2018) all had their world premieres at TIFF and went on to win best picture, as did numerous other films which passed through the fest early in their runs. Indeed, of the last 10 best picture winners, only two, 2014’s Birdman and 2021’s Coda, did not screen at the highest-profile fest north of the border, and of the eight that did, three, 2013’s 12 Years a Slave, Green Book and 2020’s Nomadland, were first honored with TIFF’s People’s Choice Award.
This year’s 47th edition of TIFF is as packed with Oscar hopefuls as any. The highest-profile world premieres include Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical The Fabelmans (Universal), which marks the master’s first trip to the fest; two Netflix titles,...

[Editor’s Note: The following article contains spoilers for “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Episode 3, “Adar.”]
“Nobody goes off trail and nobody walks alone” might as well be a rallying cry for modern franchise storytelling. It comes, sing-song and chanted, out of the mouths of young Harfoots and community elders about halfway through Episode 3 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” For a show invested right now in positioning viewers for the present and future of a series’ health, this third hour of eight in the opening season almost works as a second pilot, even moreso than either of the chapters that came in the show’s first week.
You can feel it in the welcome into Númenor, the island kingdom of men in between Valinor and Middle-Earth. The camera rising up over the horizon, the lingering looks at massive sculpted faces, swelling themes playing under grand seaside vistas: “Rings of Power...

Any best picture lineup of any industry organization that does not include A24’s “Close,” Utopia’s “Holy Spider” and the doc “Sr.,” which is still seeking a distributor, shall be declared null and void…at least in my mind.
In Telluride, all three films played like gangbusters. “Holy Spider,” which premiered at Cannes and won best actress for Zar Amir Ebrahimi, is looking likely to be Denmark’s submission for international feature. Based on the true story of Saeed Hanaei (played by Mehdi Bajestani), a serial killer who targeted sex workers and killed 16 women from 2000 to 2001 in Mashhad, Iran, the film tells a fictional account of a female journalist (Ebrahimi) who investigates the case.
The suspense thriller evokes “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991) and “Dexter,” particularly the show’s sublime fourth, Trinity Killer-focused season. Both lead actors are worthy of Academy attention, and writer and director Ali Abbasi, who helmed the 2018 hit “Border,...

The big screen debut of Marcel The Shell With Shoes On opened at 170K on six screens in New York and LA, the highest PSA of the weekend at 28,267 for the iconic lonely snail voiced by Jenny Slate.
The mock documentary about the loveable anthropomorphic mollusk hails from distributor A24, a distributor that manages to hit pay dirt more often than not, and is based on the popular YouTube series and illustrated kids’ book.
“It takes at least 20 shells to have a community,” Marcel says in the film. “My cousin fell asleep in a pocket and that’s why I don’t like the saying, ‘everything comes out in the wash.; Because sometimes it doesn’t.” He loves 60 Minutes “because Leslie Stahl is absolutely fearless.” It’s a combination of stop-motion and traditional animation and live action with Slate, Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann and Stahl.

All but six of the current 22 Broadway productions filled more than 90% of their available seats last week, and most of the ones that didn’t hit that mark came close, according to the first detailed box office figures released this season by the Broadway League.
In all, the 22 shows grossed a total of $26,656,904 during the week ending March 20, a 19% jump over the previous week’s $22M tally. Total paid attendance of 196,036 was a 16% increase over the previous week’s 168,999, and indicates that about 92% of total available seats were filled.
For the first time since Broadway returned from the Covid pandemic shutdown last September, the League – the trade organization representing theater owners and producers – released box office data for each of the 22 productions. The League had been releasing only combined numbers for all productions due to the impact of Covid on playing schedules and other statistics.

This weekend is a big one for Oscar watchers, with two awards ceremonies that often predict key categories. Sunday marks the biggest night of the year in British film, with the BAFTAs, whose winners often mirror those of the Oscars, taking place. But first, the biggest names in directing came out for the Directors Guild of America Awards. Judd Apatow returned to host the DGAs, which honor outstanding achievement in directing film, television, and commercials.
The feature film nominees at the DGAs were almost identical to the Best Director nominees at the Oscars, with winner Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) competing against Paul Thomas Anderson (“Licorice Pizza”), Steven Spielberg (“West Side Story”), and Kenneth Branagh (“Belfast”. The only difference is that the DGAs swapped in Denis Villeneuve (“Dune”) for Ryûsuke Hamaguchi (“Drive My Car”).

As I’m editing my print-edition interview with Gaspar Noe about his new feature, Vortex, this new trailer from Utopia is a nice refresher. From the Francoise Hardy soundtrack to the Edgar Allen Poe-quoting tagline to the consoling gesture rendered uncanny by Noe’s split screen, this trailer captures the film’s melancholy heartbreak and unsentimental philosophy. The film is an astringent yet not uncompassionate look at the final days of two aging leftists, a married couple played by director Dario Argento and actress Francoise Lebrun […]

"Life's a dream, isn't it?" "Yes. A dream within a dream." Utopia has revealed an official US trailer for the latest film made by controversial Argentinian filmmaker Gaspar Noé, known for his films Irreversible, Enter the Void, Love 3D, Climax, and Lux Æterna. His latest isn't as wild as his previous films - focusing on an elderly couple descending into dementia. The film is presented in split screen - following the two around their Paris apartment. This first premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival at midnight, and also played at Karlovy Vary, NYFF, Beyond Fest, and the Vienna Film Festival. Reviews from the festivals state: "With its uncommonly human touch and restless, unflinching visual aesthetic, Vortex might well be Noe’s finest and most thoughtful work." Vortex stars Dario Argento (yep!!) and Françoise Lebrun in the two lead roles, along with Alex Lutz as their son. The split screen style looks a bit jarring,...

As Season 2 of HBO Max’s Love Life got underway, Marcus Watkins comfortably navigated the world projecting the facade of a cool, laid-back dude. And then a funny thing happened. He got to know a woman named Mia, and suddenly his mask fell away.
But life’s gonna life. And at the time Marcus (played by The Good Place‘s William Jackson Harper) met Mia (2 Dope Queens‘ Jessica Williams), he was married to Emily (Utopia‘s Maya Kazan), making those sparks he shared with the attractive woman from the wedding they attended — the one who wasn’t his wife — super complicated.

The Gotham Awards will announce nominations tomorrow and expected to lead the charge, primarily due to the changes in the number of nominees allowed in new categories, are Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut “The Lost Daughter” from Netflix and Fran Kranz’s “Mass” from Bleecker Street.
The Gotham Film & Media Institute, which oversees the Gotham Awards, announced in August that awards for acting would no longer be defined by gender.
Last year’s Gotham for best picture went to “Nomadland,” which went on to win the Oscar for best picture. In a Gotham Awards first, the entire feature category was comprised of women directors. The tea leaves don’t necessarily point to another historic showing, but one film feels for sure, and that’s Gyllenhaal’s adaptation of the Elena Ferrante novel of the same name.

October promises to be the best month for box office since theaters reopened. After this weekend, it can’t come quickly enough. The disappointment of “Dear Evan Hansen,” and the absence of any other new wide releases, contributed to a $39 million weekend, the lowest domestic take in four months and 41 percent of the same weekend in 2019. (For context: That particular weekend was the weakest for September-December.)
With the opening days of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” still included in our four-week rolling average of 2021, it falls to 61 percent compared to 2019. October should be better — or to be more precise, it needs to be considerably better. The lack of prime new films since the latest Marvel release is the main alibi for the overall weakness of September, but that changes next week.
“Shang-Chi” remains #1 in its fourth week, the first title to hold that claim since “Tenet.” It...

El Planeta is a dark comedy exploring contemporary poverty, female desire, and the always complicated filial relationships of mothers and daughters. Amidst the devastation of post-crisis Spain, a mother and daughter bluff and grift to fund their extravagant daily life—with impending eviction never too far from sight. Starring Amalia Ulman, Ale Ulman, Nacho Vigalondo (!!), and Zhou Chen. Another good indie comedy about a grifter family like Kajillionaire, but with an entirely definitely look & feel. I really want to see this! Looks kooky - check it out.

Exclusive: The Profit host and Camping World boss Marcus Lemonis and Glass Entertainment founder Nancy Glass have acquired the underlying IP to classic format Let’s Make a Deal.
The pair have teamed to acquire all assets from Hatos-Hall Productions, which includes the daytime game show as well as other game shows such as 1970s ABC hit Split Second.
It is a major move involving one of the best-known game shows. The deal will not affect the show’s airing on CBS, where it has run since 2009, but will mean that producer Fremantle now licenses it from Lemonis and Glass.
Lemonis and Glass, who have worked together on the One Hundred Percent with Marcus Lemonis podcast and HGTV’s upcoming The Renovator, will exploit the format in a variety of ways including through partnerships as well as international format distribution for live and touring shows.
