The world of special effects makeup often feels like a dying art, with studios and streamers increasingly pursuing CGI and digital FX over practical artistry. Now, there is absolutely room for both styles and different films call for different methods, but gone are the days where the average moviegoer can recognize the name of a special effects makeup artist. Diehard fans are, of course, the exception to the rule, and there's at least one name that horror fanatics all know by heart and are stoked as hell to see on an end credits crawl: Steven Kostanski.
For the uninitiated, Steven Kostanski is one of the most fascinating voices in genre cinema working today. His films "The Void" and "Psycho Goreman" are both well-loved favorites, he finally gave the "Leprechaun" franchise a solid film with "Leprechaun Returns," and Kostanski's...

Back in 1983, legendary producer Roger Corman brought the world a sword and sorcery film with an awesome title: Deathstalker. It was so successful, it paved the way for three sequels: Deathstalker II: Duel of the Titans (1987), Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell (1988), and Deathstalker IV: Match of the Titans (1991). The franchise went dormant for more than thirty years, but earlier this year we learned that it’s being revived by filmmaker Steven Kostanski – whose previous credits include Manborg, Father’s Day, The Void, Leprechaun Returns, Psycho Goreman, and episodes of the short-lived Day of the Dead TV series. Kostanski is writing and directing a Deathstalker remake that has Daniel Bernhardt (John Wick) on board to play the title character… and today, Variety has unveiled the first official image of Bernhardt in character! You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Top of the mornin’ to you on this St. Patrick’s Day! To celebrate, we here at Arrow in the Head decided to mark the occasion by going back over the Leprechaun movies and ranking them from worst to first. The Leprechaun Movies Ranked list can be seen below – check it out and let us know how you would rank the movies!
Leprechaun: Origins (2014)
This is appalling. Director Zach Lipovsky, writer Harris Wilkinson, and WWE Studios were given the chance to make a new Leprechaun movie, they cast a professional wrestler (Dylan “Hornswoggle” Postl) as the title character, and then they just churned out a dull monster movie. I don’t know how anyone involved thought this was a good idea (“You know what we should do? Take everything people liked about Leprechaun and remove it!”) or how Leprechaun: Origins made it through production. The story follows Americans backpacking through...

The erratic Leprechaun franchise is not known for sticking with a single concept for too long. The namesake (originally played by Warwick Davis) has gone to L.A., Las Vegas, space, and the ‘hood (not once but twice). And after an eleven-year holiday since the Davis era ended, the character received a drastic makeover in a now-unmentionable reboot. The critical failure of said film would have implied it was time to pack away the green top hat and shillelagh, and say goodbye to the nefarious imp. Instead, the Leprechaun series tried its luck again.
The general consensus for the Leprechaun films was never positive, and the darker yet blander Leprechaun: Origins certainly did not sway opinions. Just because the 2014 installment took itself seriously did not mean viewers would. After all, creator Mark Jones conceived a gruesome horror-comedy back in the early nineties, and that format is what was expected of any future ventures.

The eight film Leprechaun horror franchise is about to get a ninth installment, with Lionsgate recently hiring director Felipe Vargas (Milk Teeth) to “reimagine” the franchise.
But what can we expect from this next installment in the long-running saga? Felipe Vargas sat down with Splattercast ahead of St. Patrick’s Day to tease the new movie.
Vargas tells the show, “I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.”
“We’re still figuring out that tone,” he continues. “And the balance between horror and comedy. I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going back to a lot of the roots of Leprechaun in a lot of different ways,...

You can always count on Syfy to program the Leprechaun movies for St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re happy to report that this year is no exception. Syfy will be airing an all-day Leprechaun Franchise Marathon for St. Patrick’s Day once again, taking place on Sunday, March 17!
The good news? They’re showing All 8 Movies throughout the day, including 2018’s Leprechaun Returns. The bad news? As always, the movies are playing out of order.
The Leprechaun franchise kicked off with Mark Jones’s original horror-comedy in 1993, which was followed by five Warwick Davis-starring sequels, a reboot, and later Leprechaun Returns in 2018. Even though Leprechaun Returns was a sequel to the original movie, Linden Porco took over the role of the title character, played by Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins.
Here’s the full schedule for this year’s marathon…

Halloween might be the next major holiday on the calendar but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a little luck o’ the Irish. Ahead of Halloween and to mark the occasion of the first Leprechaun movie’s 30th anniversary, director Mark Jones is giving his take not on the horror flick that launched an eight-movie (so far) franchise, but its sequels both good, bad and whatever Origins was going for.
Speaking with Comic Book Resources, director Mark Jones said he is a fan of most of the sequels, although there is one entry that stands out as notably bad. “I was a little bit involved in [Leprechaun 2]. I was a producer on [Leprechaun 2], but then I went off to do other stuff. I thought Leprechaun in the Hood was great. There’s a whole fan base there. Everyone but [Leprechaun: Origins], and all...

Horror was in a bad way during a good chunk of the 1990s. The slasher craze kicked off by John Carpenter's "Halloween" had more than run its course, so the studios, which never truly respected the genre in the first place, generally threw up their hands. If it wasn't a sequel or a Stephen King adaptation, they really weren't interested.
This is where upstart, mid-range production companies came in. There was still a healthy market for horror in the home video market, and, if you made the movie cheaply enough, potential to make a lightning-quick killing in theaters. Mark Jones' "Leprechaun" accomplished the latter in 1993. Released over the second weekend of January, the silly yarn about an ill-tempered fairy who goes on a murderous rampage whenever anyone steals his gold scared up $8.6 million at the United States box office. Given its $1 million budget, it was a modest hit for Trimark Pictures.

Lionsgate is on to its next pot of gold, after tapping director Felipe Vargas to helm a new film in the Leprechaun horror franchise, Deadline can confirm.
Details as to the film’s plot are under wraps, though it’s billed as a reimagining for a new generation of moviegoers. Script will be penned by Mike Van Waes, one of the writers on Disney’s new live-action Lilo & Stitch film. Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon will produce, with Meredith Wieck and Jon Humphrey to oversee for Lionsgate, following Dan Freedman’s negotiating of deals for the studio.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Lionsgate has given the greenlight to a new film in the Leprechaun franchise – but it doesn’t sound like this one will see Warwick Davis reprising his iconic role, nor will it be a follow-up to Leprechaun Returns, where Linden Porco played the title character. Instead, the project is being described as a “reimagining”, with Felipe Vargas, director of the award-winning short film Milk Teeth, on board to direct.
Mike Van Waes, who wrote the novel Peeves and has worked on the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, has written the screenplay for the new Leprechaun. Plot details are being kept under wraps. All we know right now is that Lionsgate is aiming to “reimagine the horror title for a new generation of moviegoers“.

There have been eight films in the Leprechaun franchise to date, with 2018’s Leprechaun Returns most recently heading back to the original movie’s timeline in the wake of reboot Leprechaun Origins four years prior. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into Death Valley. On the one hand writer/director Matthew Ninaber also wrote and directed the underwhelming Transference and Extraction Day. On the other hand, he was the guy inside the suit of the titular creature in one of my favourite films of the year, Psycho Goreman. So he should know a thing or two about making a practical monster movie, right?
Death Valley opens, not in the California desert as you might expect, somewhere in Eastern Europe as an unknown man flees an underground research facility going into lockdown. This leaves Dr. Chloe (Kristen Kaster) trapped inside. She sends out a distress call and grabs a fire axe to deal with whatever it is that we hear in the darkness.

As a veteran in the world of special effects makeup, Steven Kostanski (who contributed to projects like It (2017), Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim, Resident Evil: Retribution, and more) knows exactly how important great effects are in the world of genre cinema. That much is evident from his previous directorial efforts like Manborg, Leprechaun Returns, and The Void. It’s also a huge component of his latest film project, PG: Psycho Goreman, which features a ruthless demonic overlord brought to life by actor Matthew Ninaber.
Daily Dead recently caught up with Kostanski, and he discussed the inspiration behind both the story and the character of Psycho Goreman, the design process of the film’s titular character, and more. Look for PG: Psycho Goreman in select theaters and on various digital and On Demand platforms starting today, courtesy of Rlje Films.

While the rest of the world is seemingly falling apart, there are some constants that we can hold onto. One of these is that Syfy will use St. Patrick’s Day to share at least one Leprechaun-themed movie, and this March 17th they’re doubling down by showing both 2018’s Leprechaun Returns and 2012’s Leprechaun’s Revenge. While the latter film isn’t actually part of the main Leprechaun franchise, Syfy’s theme means that audiences will be able to see the two titles alternate from 8pm to 4am Est.
The Steven Kostanski-directed Leprechaun Returns was the better-regarded attempt to relaunch the long-running series in the 2010s, coming after the mixed reception for 2014’s Leprechaun: Origins. My room is stockpiled with DVDs and Blu-rays. Floor to ceiling shelves are filled with all of my favorites: Criterion, steelbook, collector’s edition, digibook, etc. etc. But no matter what, no matter how tall my collection gets, almost no gift brings me more joy than a movie.
With that in mind, Black Friday is right around the corner. And while I’m not one to go out at 5 a.m. to sit in cold, turkey-stuffed lines, there are always some pretty great deals for those dedicated shoppers that do.
Unfortunately, most DVD stores have more or less gone extinct. But thankfully, those that still sell films, like Best Buy, give cinephiles some epic deals. So go ahead, horror fanatics, bask in the awesomeness of Best Buy’s deals this Black Friday!

The Leprechaun movie series, which has racked up no less than eight instalments, apparently still has its fans within the filmmaking community. Lionsgate and Syfy worked together on the most recent outing, 2018’s Leprechaun Returns, which tried to go back to the roots of the original 1980s movie after a poorly received reboot in 2014. Although there doesn’t seem to be massive demand for more Leprechaun content, director Darren Lynn Bousman is reportedly keen to take on the franchise.
Bousman, whose directing credits include several Saw movies, The Barrens, and St. Agatha, has long wanted to try his hand at a Leprechaun picture. Speaking to MTV News as far back as 2008, he had this to say about the prospect of being offered the job:
“I would do Leprechaun in a second. If Lionsgate is listening, give me Leprechaun. It’s just one of those fun popcorn movies. I would love...

Following the current trend with long running franchises that choose to ignore the previous sequels, Leprechaun Returns follows on from the original 25 years later. A decision which works brilliantly for the film giving it the freedom to not only follow on from the original story but also allowing it to reboot the series.
Leprechaun Returns is brilliantly balanced as it acknowledges the original film, Leprechaun (1993), throughout, whilst also trying to evolve the story. This enables it to appeal to both fans of the original series, whilst also making it accessible to a new audience. Mark Holton is the only returning actor from the original film as he reprises his role of Ozzie (Linden Porco having taken over the pivotal role of the leprechaun from Warwick Davis) and is used initially as a nostalgic connection between the two films. The Leprechaun franchise has gone in some strange and perplexing directions over the years, but if you feel like the horror comedy series couldn’t get much sillier than Leprechaun 4: In Space or Leprechaun in the Hood, there was a brief moment when the studio was seriously considering a crossover with the Candyman films until actor Tony Todd shot down the idea.
The unrealized crossover came up in a recent interview with Dread Central, prompting Todd to share his side of the story, and why he didn’t want to see the Candyman face off against Warwick Davis’ Irish killer:

Anything – and I mean *anything* – Steven Kostanski’s Leprechaun Returns trotted out as a Celtic franchise continuation was going to outshine 2014’s Leprechaun Origins. You could have forced Warwick Davis’ successor Linden Porco to recite ninety minutes of Lucky Charms product placement and it’d have been an improvement. Thankfully, there’s more to this revival than “hearts, stars, and horseshoes” limericks. How *much* more will depend on your B-grade mileage, given kills and rhyming zingers are at a premium instead of collective packaging. It’s the practical showcase you’d expect from effects guru Kostanski (The Void/Astron-6 productions), hoping to distract from a goopy cauldron of body parts and shallow cinematic depth.
