Almost exactly one year ago, it was announced that Emma Roberts (Abandoned) and Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix) had signed on to star in the sci-fi thriller The Astronaut, which would mark the solo feature writing and directing debut of Jess Varley, who previously contributed a segment to the anthology film Phobias. The Astronaut has since made it way through production, but not with Roberts in the lead. Roberts had to drop out of the project and was replaced by Kate Mara (Class of ’09). Now a first look image that shows Mara as the title character has made its way online, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.
The screenplay Varley wrote has the following synopsis: When astronaut Sam Walker (Mara) returns from her first space mission, she’s found miraculously alive in a punctured capsule floating deep off the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. General...

Within the DNA for Defiant Studios, the production banner behind Terry Crews’ 2020 hit “John Henry” and last month’s “Phobias,” are two companies: You’ve definitely heard of the scrappy, microbudget mentality that has made Blumhouse Productions a juggernaut. But you may have forgotten about Insurge, a one-time division of Paramount born with the mission to incubate young, first-time filmmakers. Defiant Studios producer Eric B. Fleischman is a veteran of both companies, and he and partner Maurice Fadida have quietly found success by embracing a model that is built around small-budget genre films from emerging talent and slate financing that mitigates risk and allows for taking more chances on talent. That approach is already paying off since Defiant was the only studio with two movies that premiered at last month’s SXSW: Elle Callahan’s “Witch Hunt” and Mickey Keating’s “Offseason,” which sold to Rlje Films and Shudder just this week.

Hello again, everyone! We have a brand new assortment of horror and sci-fi Blu-ray & DVD releases coming out this week, and here’s the lowdown on what to expect. A government testing facility is home to eerie experiments on people with extreme fears in Phobias, and with the new horror anthology film out now on Digital and On Demand via Vertical Entertainment, we caught up with filmmaker Maritte Lee Go to discuss her segment for the movie, Vehophobia (which she co-wrote with Broderick Engelhard), including the chilling real-life experience that inspired the story, working with Radio Silence (who executive produced the film), and she also discussed her upcoming "Welcome to the Blumhouse" movie, Black as Night.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Maritte, and congratulations on your work in the new movie Phobias! How did you initially get involved with this anthology? Were you originally going to direct Vehophobia as a separate short film?

Phobias is not your average anthology film. To begin with, it features a selection of phobias that are not instantly recognizable, and what's more it comes from the executive producing team of Radio Silence, the filmmaking team behind Ready or Not and the upcoming Scream sequel.
More than most movies of this ilk, Phobias feels like a cohesive feature film, the outcome of close collaboration between each of the five directors and shared production resources which meant that Phobias was shot more like a TV series than a typical anthology project. This doesn't mean that there isn't variation among the stories, each phobia is as unique as the storyteller behind it, but the collaboration results in a movie that actually feels like a movie rather than a bu...

Producers behind the Terry Crews micro-budget drama “John Henry” are taking a victory lap this week, as their film has found an exhilarating second life and wide viewership on Netflix.
In a period that saw dominance from the second season of the Christina Applegate series “Dead to Me,” and stiff feature competition from the Michelle Obama documentary “Becoming” and the continued reign of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction,” the Crews film stood tallest — rating as the number one movie on Netflix this Wednesday, according to the platform’s own top ten list.
“John Henry” comes from debut writer-director Will Forbes, and producers Maurice Fadida, Eric B. Fleischman and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones. UTA Independent Film Group sold the project to L.A.-based Saban Films last year, which bowed in a quiet limited theatrical run in January.
Early this week, Fadida and Fleischman noticed only in browsing the Netflix app that their film had become available.

Ahmet Serif Yildirim has created a great CG animated short film called Phobias that depicts various phobias with a cute little character, but it’s also kinda unsettling, especially if you have any of these phobias.
A phobia is a type of anxiety disorder, defined by a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation
Some of the fears that are represented in the video include arachnophobia (fear of spiders), ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), trypophobia (fear of patterns of holes), thalassophobia (fear of the ocean), glossophobia (stagefright), spectrophobia (fear of mirrors), hodophobia (fear of travel), and more.
I personally have a fear of heights. What kind of phobia(s) do you have, if you don’t mind sharing?...

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s international distribution company Telepool is investing in a genre slate from indie producer Eric B. Fleischman, along with Maurice Fadida’s Kodiak Pictures, Variety has learned exclusively.
Fleischman was a Sundance Film Festival breakout star in 2016, when at age 26, he made a strong showing with “Sleight” and “Carnage Park.” His company, Defiant Studios, will receive a cash infusion for several horror-thrillers, beginning with the film “Phobias,” which is currently in production.
The Smiths acquired Telepool in late June, with Marc Forster and his shop Elysian Fields. This marks the first significant investment and U.S. expansion for Telepool, a standalone theatrical and multi-platform distribution entity with a big presence in Europe. Kodiak is a producer on David Ayer’s upcoming “The Tax Collector,” starring Shia Labeouf, as well as Gerard Butler’s “Keepers.”
