"We didn't know anything about this business, but it didn't matter at all. It was too easy." Oh yeah, that sounds sketchy. Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film called Bitconned, an inside look at the story of one of the first cryptocurrency fraud schemes. Once again it brings up the question: is it a cautionary tale about cryptocurrency, or is actually a cautionary tale about greed and capitalism and how crime actually pays in America? You'll have to watch to find out! Netflix's intro explains: "In this fast-paced, debaucherous documentary from doc director Bryan Storkel, Ray Trapani himself guides viewers through the ups and downs of his dramatic journey, alongside his family, former friends, and the journalist who exposed Centra Tech as the first high-profile fraud case of the crypto era." This has vibes of The Wolf of Wall Street, though about crypto and how easy...

Filmmaker Theo Love is directing “Treasure Hunters,” a documentary feature based on the New York Magazine article “The Great 21st-Century Treasure Hunt.”
Netflix will distribute the documentary, with Vox Media Studios and Nomadica Films set to produce.
Benjamin Wallace wrote the article that inspired the non-fiction film, which was published in November of 2020. The lengthy read captures an epic 10-year “sometimes maddening, occasionally deadly, brainscrambling” search for gold in the Rockies.
The documentary’s official logline reads: “‘Treasure Hunters’ follows the true story of Forrest Fenn, an art collector, who buried a $2 million treasure in 2010 filled with rare gold coins in an unknown location with 24 cryptic verses offering the only hint to its whereabouts. More than 400,000 searched for it, including five people who died. Finally, this past June, a former journalist named Jack Stuef came forward claiming to have found it. So why does no one believe him? Is the treasure still out there somewhere?...

LeVar Burton himself, who hosted the program during its run and helped make it a classroom staple, sat down for new interviews with the filmmakers to discuss the show’s legacy. "It's not a story you hear every day: religion, relationships, and murder." This is creepy. HBO has debuted an official trailer for Alabama Snake, a true crime documentary directed by Theo Love. Alabama Snake highlights the story of Pentecostal minister Glenn Summerford — a man accused of attempting to murder his wife with a rattlesnake in the sleepy town of Scottsboro, Alabama — and the investigation and trial that haunted Southern Appalachia for decades. The film features local historian & folklorist Dr. Thomas Burton, who spent his life studying the culture, beliefs, and folklore of the Pentecostal snake handlers, as he paints a Southern Gothic portrait of Summerford and his tale of demonic possession. This looks and sounds way creepier than it seems at first, which is the point. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Theo Love's Alabama Snake, direct from HBO's YouTube: Alabama Snake explores the story of October 4, 1991, ...

Room 104 and Togetherness creators Mark and Jay Duplass have set their latest HBO project – a documentary series about a 1970s auto scam centered around a mysterious entrepreneur.
The Lady and the Dale is one of a number of new documentaries unveiled by WarnerMedia’s premium cable network.
The film, which is directed by Nick Cammilleri (Slide) and Zackary Drucker (Transparent), tells the story of Elizabeth Carmichael, who rose to prominence when she released a fuel-efficient three-wheeled vehicle during the 1970s gas crisis.
However, the problem was that there were questions marks whether Carmichael and the car were real. Liz Carmichael was born Jerry Dean Michael, a criminal wanted for grand theft, fraud and involvement in the Colombian drug ring. The story involves investigative journalists and hit men with employees insisting that Carmichael, one of the first public figures to be outed as transgender, worked non-stop on the revolutionary car,...

David Permut, the Oscar-nominated producer of “Hacksaw Ridge,” has acquired the life rights to the story of John Franzese Jr., the son of the Colombo crime family’s second-in-command, Sonny Franzese.
The elder Franzese passed away on Sunday at the age of 103.
Franzese Jr. became active in the family business during the 1980s, leading to a life of overindulgence. After falling victim to drug addiction, he was excommunicated from the family and hit rock bottom, living directionless on the streets. Franzese Jr. sought help through a 12-step program, which ultimately led him to the witness protection program as well. He found that the only way to achieve peace with himself was to come clean of the crimes he had committed and work with the FBI to bring his former consiglieres to justice, including his father. In 2010, he became the first son of a New York mobster to testify in court against his father.

Exclusive: Amazon Studios has set up Sheela, an intriguing drama that Barry Levinson will direct with Priyanka Chopra starring as Ma Anand Sheela, a guru who perpetrated what is called the largest bio-terrorist attack executed on U.S. soil.
She was the personal secretary of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh from 1981 through 1985, and supervised his move to relocate his thousands of followers — known as the Rajneesh — to the small town of Wasco County, Oregon. Sheela was appointed president but unbeknownst to both of them, this move would be met by resistance from the local community that led to a full blown war within the county. As a way to claim governing control of the land, Sheela devised a plan to fix the election by recruiting hundreds of homeless people to register to vote in their favor. Ultimately, she was convicted of conspiring to poison local restaurants with salmonella to prevent the opposing locals from voting.

Netflix is famously tight-lipped when it comes to revealing how many people are tuning in to its endless supply of movies and TV series, though the streaming giant does occasionally toot its own horn when one of its titles does especially well. Now the company is experimenting with a weekly list of its most-watched offerings in the UK, with nature docuseries “Our Planet” topping the first edition.
In a Twitter thread, the company announced that it will be releasing such lists on a weekly basis from here on out. To compile them, “we look at the most-watched individual season of a show, film or special (regardless of when it launched). ‘Watched’ means members finished at least 70% of one episode.”
“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

“It’s a test as we want to make sure this information is useful for you,” Netflix added. “So we may tweak it in the weeks ahead. eg. we’re not including kids right now.

Elon Musk, Hands Across America, Aidy Bryant, and more in today's daily Link Tank!
Here's why the organizer of Hands Across America wants to talk to Jordan Peele.
"Ken Kragen hasn’t seen Us, but the organizer of Hands Across America really wants to talk to Jordan Peele. Since the March 22 release of Peele’s new horror movie that frames the 1986 charity into something sinister, there is a renewed interest in the Gen-x cultural touchstone that the Washington Post dubbed “the most Eighties thing to happen in the 1980s.” Kragen tells Inverse he just wants to make sure Peele’s darker portrayal doesn’t outshine the original event."

A family man attempts to find a $2m stash of drugs in an intermittently interesting yet mostly disappointing film
Early in The Legend of Cocaine Island, an older man, one who whiles long Florida evenings around a campfire with his neighbors, poses a question. You know the difference between a northern and a southern fairytale? A northern one, he says, starts with: “Once upon a time.” A southern one starts with: “Y’all ain’t gonna believe this shit.”

"We've got a plane, we've got a pilot, and we've got a plan." Netflix has debuted the trailer for a fascinating true-crime documentary titled The Legend of Cocaine Island, the latest by filmmaker Theo Love (Little Hope Was Arson). This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and at a few other small fests, with a global Netflix release later this month. The story goes that Rodney Hyden, a small business owner from Florida, desperate for salvation after losing his fortune in the recession decides to go on a search for a (possibly) mythical $2 million stash of cocaine buried on an island in the Caribbean. The docudrama features a lot of key recreations, with Rodney playing himself in these vividly shot scenes. The big surprise is that, as dumb as this story sounds, it doesn't play out the way you're expecting. Dive in. Here's the official trailer for Theo...

At last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, the documentary titled “White Tide” caught our attention. The filmmaking, combined with the incredible story, created one of the most fun docs that we saw in any film festival in 2018. And as with most documentaries nowadays, Netflix went ahead and snatched it up and gave it a new title “The Legend of Cocaine Island.”

And as you can see in the new trailer for the doc, which premieres later this month, this film is a “southern fairy tale,” which is very different than what you’re probably used to.

As a man says in the trailer for the Netflix documentary “The Legend of Cocaine Island,” there are Northern fairy tales and Southern fairy tales. Northern ones start off, “Once upon a time…,” while a Southern one begins, “You ain’t goin’ to believe this s—.”
“The Legend of Cocaine Island” boasts that it’s a Southern fairy tale, and it features a handful of down south good ‘ol boys who get caught up in a myth about a stash of $2 million worth of cocaine to the point that they start living like Scarface.
“I was talking that smack, that drug talk,” one of the documentary’s subjects Rodney Hyden says in the trailer. “Say hello to my little friend!”

Netflix has acquired the global rights to director Theo Love’s documentary feature “The Legend of Cocaine Island.”
The film, previously titled “White Tide: The Legend of Culebra,” earned high praise after it premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival.
In “The Legend of Cocaine Island,” a small-business owner and family man comes across the legend of a buried stash of cocaine worth $2 million hidden in the Caribbean. Having been wiped out during the Great Recession, he hatches a plan to retrieve the buried loot, using the talents of a band of colorful misfits. But without prior drug-running experience, trouble (and laughter) ensues.
“We didn’t set out to make a documentary in the traditional sense. We wanted to make a movie. A big fat, entertaining movie.” said Love. “I grew up thinking documentaries had to be boring, stuffy, educational films, but then I got my Netflix subscription. Netflix changed the...

Gauging the success of “White Tide: The Legend of Culebra” probably means gauging how the film’s subject, Ronnie Hyden, responds to it. Will he dig it? Will he hate it? Will he sense that director Theo Love has honored him, if not flattered him, with his recreation of the batshit crazy events of Hyden’s recent life? Will he feel respected instead of humiliated by his portrayal in the documentary’s slim running time?...
